Chapter 4: Familiar Eyes

1316 Words
Aella POV I stare down at my empty plate, getting up and walking over to the sweet server who tended to me. I get a better look at her as I'm walking up the counter. She’s a tall, beautiful young girl, probably my age, with beautiful strawberry blonde locks that fall perfectly around her face, her light blue eyes complementing her skin beautifully. I waited at the counter until I got her attention by waving her over. I look over to see I was one of the only customers left in the diner besides a gentleman sitting in the very last stool at the end of the counter. He seems to be focused on the screen of his phone, oblivious to his surroundings. I look over to Aliyah who is handing me the clothes she promised and I can’t thank her enough for all she’s done for me today. I rush over to the restroom to quickly get changed so Aliyah can finish with her duties and head home for the night. As I walk out of the restroom, I peek over to the counter as both Aliyah and the gentleman, who were deep in conversation both look up at me simultaneously. The man’s piercing bluish-gray colored eyes captivated my attention. I realized I was staring and quickly looked away, attempting to hide my flushed cheeks. I waved good bye to Aliyah and walked out of the diner. “Now to find a place to sleep tonight..” I say to no one in particular. As I open the door I slam right into a muscular wall. I look up to stare directly into the eyes of none other than Dante. He looks down at me, expressionless, grabbing my hand and putting something in it. “Here.” He states coldly, walking away before I can even see what I'm holding. I look down to see a wad of cash folded neatly in my hand. I glance up, surprised, searching for the man who was just in front of me moments ago. "Where the hell did he go?" Realizing he was gone, I ran in the direction I saw him walking towards, only to find myself staring at a dead end. I give up my search instantly, tired after the events that unfolded in such a short amount of time and instead decide roam down the sidewalk in search of a cozy place to spend the night. Unknown POV I got to the location my beta called me to and shift back as he hands me a pair of shorts. “We’ve already called the warriors on watch to give a formal statement of what they saw. The intruder was a man carrying an unconscious woman. He left her by that tree and he disappeared in the opposite direction.” My beta informs me. I walk over to the tree he pointed at, instantly overwhelmed by the sweet scent of jasmine and vanilla. I knew it was my mate's sweet scent all over that tree. That must make her one of the intruders. But why did she arrive through a portal with a man and why was she unconscious? I felt a pang of jealousy at the thought of another man touching my sweet, beautiful mate. Was she running from the same man who abandoned her here? What does he want with her and why would he leave here to fend for herself? I look around for any clues as to where the man could have ran off too, but decide to leave it to my warriors and my beta. I was to distracted by my mate's enticing scent to function and give orders. I tell my Beta I’m leaving the rest of the investigation to him, shifting back into Ace and running towards my car. Once I get there, I shift back and change into the spare change of clothes I have in the back seat. I get into the driver's seat and start the engine, driving off in the direction of the city to go pick up my sister from work. Getting to my destination, I park in my usual spot, and walk into the cozy little diner. I make a bee-line directly towards my seat at the end of the counter, where I can chit chat with my sister as she finishes her duty for the night. The diner is usually empty at this time except for two or three customers finishing up their meals. As I'm scrolling through my phone, a moan escapes my mouth at the sudden intrusion through my nostrils of that same jasmine and vanilla scent from earlier. Aliyah looks at me awkwardly, sideeyeing me and walking over to where the perpetrator of the smell stands, only an arms-length away. I slightly looked to the side only to see my mate standing there,in such close proximity to me, taking some spare clothes out of the hands of my little sister. She thanks her, walking off into the restroom to change. I stare after her, trying to calm the beast inside of me, imagining my mate undressing only a couple feet away from me. I call my sister over and begin to interrogate her. “Did you talk to her? Did she eat anything? What’s her name?” “Woah, slow down there, creeper. Since when do you care about the customers that come here?” “Aliyah…” I began to speak just as my mate walked back out. She looked at the two us, before turning away, waving goodbye and proceeding to walk out the door. I look after her disappointed, wishing she would have stayed just a little longer for Ace and I to admire her a bit more. “Alright, spit it out. Do you know her?” Aliyah chimes in, bringing me back to the present. I continue to stare after the beautiful creature that just walked out of the diner, taking a second to process what I say next. I stay silent as I feel Aliyah staring at me accusingly. A smile plays on my lips as I whisper to myself, “My mate.” Aliyah stares at me in disbelief. “Did you just say your mate?” She whispers. I nod, without even glancing her way, keeping my eyes locked on the door where my beautiful little mate just walked out of. “Oh my goddess! How come she didn’t recognize you? Isn’t she supposed to run into your arms, pronouncing her love for you, like some kind of princess finds her prince charming type of thing?” She asks, brining my attention to her as I notice she’s staring at me in disbelief. I shrug and continue to stare at the door where my mate just exited. “Theo! Why aren’t you going after her?! She has the right to know you’re her mate!” “Aliyah, don’t you think I want to? I'm not even sure if she knows about werewolves yet. Let alone about the concept of having a mate. She's going to think I'm crazy before I can even get the chance to know her. I cant risk losing her before I even had a chance to properly meet her.” My voice breaks a little as I mention losing my mate. I have been longing for my mate since before I turned 18. I am a firm believer in the mate bond. I vowed to myself not to even look at another she-wolf. I’ve waited 7 years since I came of age, for my mate to turn up, and now that she has, I can't even approach her like I desire to do so because she doesn't even recognize the bond between us. I feel a tap on my shoulder, breaking me from my thoughts. I look at my sister, her face apologetic. "Let's head home, Theo."
