The Samaritan

Silas ducked under the window, his heart pounded in his chest. The sound of multiple footsteps right outside the window made his breath catch in his throat. “You see where he went?” a rough voice asked. “No. He can't be far though. Search every single building!” As the footsteps receded, Silas let out a shaky breath. He needed to find a way out of this damn place. Rising to his feet, he nearly fell over. His ankle stung from landing awkwardly when he lept through the window. But no matter, there were more important things at the moment. He fought through the pain and walked deeper into the half-built structure. A shrill, alarmed voice made him nearly jump out of his skin. He quickly ducked behind a wall and listened closer. “...be quick… Yes, I shot her up with the aphrodisiac, she won't be able to resist all of you… Yeah, you can do whatever you want. I'll give you an extra $200 if you record it… Half-sister! She's my Half-sister, besides, I hate her so… Just be quick. Happy 18th birthday, Celine!” Silas was utterly confused. He peeked around the corner just in time to see a woman walk out of the doorless entrance and another unconscious on the floor. His stomach churned when the woman's words finally made sense. Her own sister? He shook his head, straightened himself, and started to head out. This wasn't the first f****d-up thing he'd experienced and it would be the last. He wasn't a superhero so it was none of his business. Besides, he had his own life to preserve at the moment. Voices came from the back of the house, making him hide behind the wall of the room with the unconscious woman. “Man, she's all ours for real?” “I won't believe it until I see her. That high and mighty b***h will get what's coming to her.” “When I'm done with her, she won't be able to walk for days.” Silas' blood chilled in his veins. These were the thugs the lady had been speaking to. And they clearly had diabolical plans for the unconscious woman. He clenched his fists, every instinct telling him to run, to fight for his own life. But as the footsteps got closer, something snapped inside him. Am I really going to let this happen? Without thinking, he rushed to her and scooped her into his arms. He was about to walk out of the door when the barrel of an assault rifle slowly emerged from the corner of the building. Panic overwhelmed him. It took everything in him not to drop the woman as he took slow, noiseless steps back into the uncompleted building, quickly finding a hiding spot behind a piece of plywood. He watched, from behind a tiny hole in the plywood, how the gunman stalked into the building. When he glanced at the plywood, Silas' heart started to thunder. The only flimsy piece of plywood that could fall if even a feather landed on it was keeping him alive. The gunman walked closer, gun pointed right at Silas' head. He was so close, all he had to do was peek over the plywood and he would find his target. Multiple footsteps from behind made him spin around on his heel, pointing his gun at the moment who just walked into the room. “Look boys, it's GI Joe,” one of them said. “You lost?” “Have you seen Silas Duhamel?” The gunman asked impatiently. “Who? Pretty boy Silas?” They all burst into laughter. “Yeah, on TV last night?” The gunman was getting frustrated. “What did I expect from a bunch of hillbillies,” he spat and turned to leave. Silas let out a silent sigh of relief. That left the thug. He was sure they'd leave when they got tired of searching for their prey. “Who you callin’ a hillbilly?” one of the thugs asked, rushing after the gunman, who quickly spun around and slammed the butt of his gun into the thug's face. He went down like a lead balloon, wailing as blood gushed out of his nose. “You son of a b***h!” a second thug yelled and lunged for the gunman. The gunman raised his gun at him, stopping him in his tracks. “Think again, i***t!” Silas knew that even if a single shot was fired, the other gunmen would converge in their location and that would spell doom for him and the poor woman in his arms. “I'll only say this one,” said the gunman. “Leave now or else.” “Or else what?” a thug yelled. “You think you can take all of us?” From where Silas crouched and watched, he could tell these thugs were idiots who didn't seem to understand how powerful guns were. His heart was pounding. He saw the trouble coming like a runaway train. He was in pain all over but the adrenaline muted the screams of his agonized body. “Wanna find out?” asked the gunman tauntingly. The first thug lunged but was quickly shot down. Silas didn't wait as the other sprang into action, bullets ricocheting all over the place. He scooped her up and bolted for the back window. As he leaped through it, he landed awkwardly again on his ankle. But stopping was the last thing on his mind. An explosion behind him nearly knocked him off his feet but he kept running. All around him, men were shouting, and heavy boots pounded against the floor. Up ahead was a dense bush. He made a beeline for it and dove into it, ducking to catch his breath. The woman in his arms stirred. “You’re finally back,” she said and nuzzled into his neck. Silas froze. He struggled to listen for danger as her arms roamed his body, from his chest down to between his legs. “Stop it,” he whispered and smacked her hand away. The noise behind him slowly faded into silence. It seemed the men had all gone. His body realized they were no longer in the thick of it and collapsed. Silas was shocked at how exhausted he was. He fell limply to the ground with her on top of him. Her laugh was soft and dreamy. “I missed you, baby. I couldn't stop dreaming about you.” There wasn't an ounce of strength left in his body. He lay still as she explored his body with her hands and lips, slowly unbuckling his belt. As darkness slowly crept in, Silas vaguely recalled the other lady talking about an aphrodisiac. He thought about how he'd kept an unworthy woman from touching his empire for years. Now he was in the clutches of a woman whose name he didn't even know. I should have left her.
