"Fire, Fire, fire our house Seraphina shouted." Everything was over even the only home we ever knew was now gone. We had been walking home with our hearts already shattered from Victor’s betrayal but this was the final blow. The shop where father had worked for years the kitchen where he hummed his favorite melodies while he cooked our meals the rooms that held the scent of jasmine and our childhood, all of it was being consumed by flames. Seraphina did not think. She bolted forward her dress flapping in the wind. Seraphina No... I screamed scrambling to catch up to her. She reached for the front door but the wood collapsed inward with flames. I yanked Seraphina back sending us stumbling backward into the dirt. We stood there in the dark watching as the roof caved in as our entire history turned to ash and smoke. People from the neighborhood stood in the distance watching the fire but nobody moved to help. Every neighbor we had known for years turned away shutting their doors. They were too afraid to get involved with anything that concerned the governor’s family. Seraphina collapsed to her knees her breath coming in ragged gasps. She did not cry anymore she just stared into the fire not blinking. Why she mumbled. Why does the world want to destroy us. I did not have an answer. I just held her hand and watched until the fire finished burning. Suddenly someone emerged from behind us. It was Vane walking towards us grinning. This is just a warning he muttered. Next time you both won't be this lucky. Seraphina scrambled up her legs shaking. You, you... monster she mumbled. Vane ignored her stepping closer until he was in front of us. You still have a chance to rescue your father before sunrise tomorrow he scoffed, reaching out and grabbing Seraphina’s chin up. Be my wife and your family will be free from my wrath. Never I seraphine will never be your wife stop dreaming Vane Okay then grab her sister she will be coming with us Vane scoffed smirking. Get away from my sister you monster she is just ten years old, seraphina screamed, shoving Vane away standing firmly in front of me. she is Perfect the Duke is looking for a bride for his son. What are we going to do now I muttered. Before she could answer, the lock turned as Vane stepped inside the room smirking You look unsettled, he Muttered, You should be grateful not sad. Gratitude? Seraphina turned shielding me behind her. Where is my father? He is alive. He is currently being held in one of the suite his quite safe, for now. Then let us go see him You have what you wanted now. Hahaha I have your word, not the papers. My dear Seraphina, you are a woman of honor, but your father’s life is a heavy price. He leaned against the table, his gaze shifting to me, then back to her. You will see him, yes. But only after the ceremony. Ceremony? Seraphina muttered, You mean the wedding. Vane nodded as he stepped closer forcing her to look up at him. Everything is prepared. You will marry me by morning, and you will sign the documents that transfer your family’s land and assets to my name. Once the ink is dry, your father will walk out of those gates a free man. He reached out, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. If you try to flee, or if your sister causes any more trouble, I will make sure the last thing your father hears is your screams. He turned toward the door, pausing for a fraction of a second to glance over his shoulder. You have until sunrise to prepare. Do not test my patience, Seraphina. You have already lost everything, do not lose the only thing you have left.
