Episode:Peace and firelight

351 Words
At the emergency board meeting, Max strutted in like a man who already won. He presented the media scandals, the stock drop, the failed project launch. Called Dominic reckless. Unfit. “KingTech needs a new face,” Max declared. “Someone stable. Reliable. Not distracted by a maid-turned-girlfriend.” Gasps. Dominic stood slowly. “Then let’s put all our cards on the table.” He played the confession. Zariah’s father’s voice filled the room, shaking with guilt and regret. “Dominic King never stole from us. I did. I lied to protect my daughter. And I made him my scapegoat.” Silence. Max’s face drained of color. “That’s not admissible—” Zariah stepped forward. “And here’s proof that Max sold AI code to our competitor.” She dropped the printed logs on the table. The board erupted. By the time the vote happened, Dominic was unanimously reinstated—and Max was escorted out in silence. Later that night, in Dominic’s penthouse, Zariah collapsed onto the couch, exhausted and empty. Dominic knelt in front of her, quiet. “You didn’t have to do that,” he said. “Yes, I did.” He cupped her face. “You’re stronger than you think, Zariah. And I’m in love with you.” Tears welled in her eyes. “I was supposed to hate you.” “You did.” She laughed through the tears. “Not well enough.” Six months later… Zariah stood in the new KingTech lobby—her name now on the executive assistant plaque. She’d declined the promotion to VP of Strategy. Said she wanted to earn it properly. She had grown into her voice. Her strength. Her story. Dominic still drove her crazy—but now it was love, not revenge. He surprised her that evening with a private dinner in the old Laurent building—newly acquired, restored, and renamed The Zariah Center for Women in Tech. As she stepped onto the rooftop and saw the lights, the banner, the skyline, and Dominic waiting with a ring— She knew everything had been worth it.
