Laura's daily life in the Ardiaz Vincent estate seemed monotonous with each passing day. Even if Roland seemed to be warmer and more approachable now than before, the new wife still felt that something was lacking.
She did not hate her daily duties, far from it. Neither are they difficult to do, but the continuous feeling of inadequacy would not leave her. Although she had a business degree, she had never gotten involved in the family business because her father chose her sister to train and run it instead of her.
Maybe if I ask Roland about getting a job it will help prove my worth and sincerity. All I ever do is stay at home and wait for him all day, Laura thought while overseeing the breakfast table being set. She didn't have to be part of the preparations but Laura was an early bird and didn't see it as a chore. If I could secure a job, in the worst-case scenario where Roland will divorce me, I would be able to support myself and maybe pay for some part of grandma's medical needs. Besides , with a job, it would be easier for me to source a medical loan.
Their servants were soon done with the preparations and everything was perfect. Laura was able to learn about Roland's food preferences from the head maid that have served his family for years, so she made sure today his favourite breakfast items were on the dining table.
"Go inform my husband that breakfast is ready," Laura instructed one of the maids. However, before the uniformed servant was able to exit, the dining room door were pushed open, and a tall figure dressed in an Italian branded suit and signature leather shoes entered. Laura glanced at the clock to see it was 7:15 am, the exact time Roland would come down for breakfast, just like a clockwork.
Her eyes sparkled at his arrival, "Good morning, Roland. How was your night?" She greeted him as he took his seat at the head of the table. The part-Italian bearded male gave her a polite smile then returned her greeting.
"Good morning Laura, my sleep was quite satisfactory. How was yours?"
"It was also very good, especially since we are now sleeping in the same room," Laura sweetly answered as she took a seat on his right side. And because we now share the same bed, even though we have yet to make love… But I’m not complaining. The dark-haired young woman said to herself as she put in Roland’s preferred amount of sugar and cream in his coffee.
Laura, as she ate, continued thinking about her plan to ask Roland to let her work as an employee. After Roland was finished with his meal, the dainty lass finally posed the question that she had decided to ask…
"Roland, can I talk to you about something?"
Her muscular and broad-shouldered spouse wiped his lips with a hand-embroidered napkin, then glanced at her, giving her his complete attention. "Go ahead, Laura."
"I was wondering if you could help me get a job. I would really want to be productive as your wife."
"But there isn't any need for you to work,” the comely man pointed out “All you have to do is fulfil your daily duties here at home. Also, if you start working, you won't have enough free time to visit your grandma regularly,"
True, Roland does have a good point but Laura was already decided about it…
"I know a way for me to manage the house and granny will understand my decision. Recently, she has been bugging me to do something for myself, and I think getting employed would be the best option for me," Laura explained.
Getting a good-paying job was something she truly wanted. And there was no possible reason for Roland to refuse if she really wanted to be an asset to society. Besides, he was also curious to know what type of person his wife was and he realized that staying all day at home was not the best way to do that.
"Fine, since you are sure about it, email me your resume, and I will find a way that you get a suitable and adequately-paid position," Roland agreed as he rose from the table and buttoned his black matte suit.
Laura beamed an elated smile at him that reflected in her sparkling her light brown eyes. She was really overjoyed and she readily showed her husband how she felt.
"Thank you, Roland. This really means a lot to me." the 26-year-old maiden chimed ecstatically .
Roland curtly nodded and immediately walked to the garage so he can drive to work. Meanwhile, Laura excitedly searched online for a resume format that will work best for her. She filled it up then immediately sent it to Roland’s office email. The entire day, the eager wife zealously waited for positive feedback.
Even when she was with her grandma that afternoon, Laura seemed a bit distracted, since she kept glancing at her mobile for any possible feedback or text message about her application. Eventually, grandma Lauren couldn’t help but say what’s on her mind about her grandchild’s odd behavior.
"Laura," her grandmother's slightly raised voice called out as she patted the anxious lass on her hand.
"Yes? " She stuttered, as she glanced at her granny, who gave her a sceptical look
“Is something the matter? You have been lost all day while checking your cellphone repeatedly. Is there a problem, dearie?”
."No, it is nothing, grandma," Laura blurted out, nervous that her elderly relative might had seen through her.
Lauren was about to press further, but Laura's ringtone rang all of a sudden. As she hastily took a peek at her phone’s screen, she saw that her caller was her husband.
"Excuse me I have to get this, granny," Laura remarked exuberantly before hurriedly stepping out of the room.
"Hello," Mrs. Ardiaz Vincent immediately greeted right after the call connected.
Roland bypassed the usual exchange of pleasantries and went straight to the point, "I found a suitable position for you. However, you have to drop by the Vin Diaz group before 3 pm for your interview. Would you be able to make it?"
"Really?!" Laura's squeaked excitedly, “Don’t worry, I can definitely make it. Thank you husband.”
Admittedly, the eager young lady was not expecting this opportunity to come so soon…
"Alright then, just head to the company’s human resources department. They already have your resume and are just waiting that you pass your interview," Roland reminded on a final note before saying his version of farewells. “Okay, I need to get back to work, wife. Good luck!” then instantly cut the call.
Laura gazed at her phone with wide eyes, Did he just call me WIFE?! Oh my God, I think I’m finally getting through to him!
By now, she was exceedingly excited by the news and Roland’s slip that when Laura immediately bid grandma Lauren goodbye by using the excuse that she had to drop by the store, the older woman was already aware that something was up with her granddaughter. And since Laura didn't tell her what she was excited about, Lauren decided to just wait for her grand child to willingly open to her at her own time.
Meanwhile, there was still an hour before 3 pm, so Laura was able to arrive at the venue Roland mentioned, just in time for her interview.
Fortunately, everything went smoothly and the interview was a breeze for her. Although she hasn't worked for a while, Laura is very intelligent and is still very knowledgeable in her chosen field of study.
"I am truly impressed at your sharp intellect, Mrs. Ardiaz Vincent. Your appointment letter will be emailed to you before the end of the day. Welcome to the Vin Diaz family," The interviewer enthusiastically praised Laura while giving her a firm handshake.
"Thank you for the compliment; it is an honour to work for and with you."
With a wide bright smile, Laura left the office then went directly home. And exactly according to what the interviewer said, her appointment letter was emailed to her a few hours later. She was offered a higher management position with an impressive salary with complete employee benefits as well.
Laura was truly happy and decided to do something for Roland to thank him for his help. She made a quick trip to the supermarket to pick out some fresh ingredients to prepare one of her best dishes in order to cook up a feast for Roland.
Immediately after she arrived home, she went straight to the kitchen to prepare everything. This time, Laura didn't ask for any of their servants’ help because she wanted to prepare everything herself. The aroma of the different cooked dishes waffled in the air while Laura's forehead was beaded with sweat. She wiped the evidence of how hard she worked with one hand as she gazed upon all the meals she had prepared.
“Oh, that must be him…” Laura said aloud upon hearing their melodious doorbell. “I hope he will enjoy what I will serve him tonight.”
