ADRIAN POV
I couldn't help but feel a sense of triumph as I thought about Rose finally agreeing to sign the papers. She was almost mine, and I could feel the emptiness within me begin to fill.
But my victory was short-lived, as the doorbell rang revealing Rachel whose venomous words cut through me like a knife.
"You think you've won, don't you?" she spat, her voice trembling with rage.
"You think you can just manipulate and use people to get what you want, and then discard them like trash? You're a monster, Adrian."
I tried to defend myself, but she wouldn't let me.
"You're a two-faced goody-goody, Adrian. You pretend to be so perfect, but you're the reason our father died. You hid his illness from us, kept us away from him. I never got to say goodbye, never got to see him one last time."
Her words stung, and I felt a pang of guilt. I had made mistakes, I knew that. But I had done it to protect them, but she'll never let me explain my own side of the story or if I explained she'll never believe.
Rachel's eyes blazed with fury.
"You'll pay for what you've done, Adrian. I'll take everything from you - your wealth, your status, everything. You'll be left with nothing."
She spat at my feet, her voice shaking.
"Enjoy it while it lasts, Adrian. Sooner or later, everything will vanish. You'll be left with nothing but the ashes of your own destruction."
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving me feeling hollow and defeated.
I knew I had to make things right, but I didn't know where to start.
...
Rose sat across from me, her eyes searching for answers.
"Adrian, I need to ask you something before I sign this contract. Why have you been so cold to me? Mean and brutal to everyone, like everything to you is a joke?".
I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something about Rose's genuine concern put me at ease.
"It's not you, Rose," I began.
"It's just... my past. My father's passing. I've been carrying around guilt and grief for a long time.
I sighed, rubbing my temples. Where did I even begin?
"It's about my father," I started, the memories flooding back.
"He was diagnosed with leukemia four months before he passed away. He was a strong man, but he didn't want anyone to know. He hid it from everyone, including Mom and Rachel."
Rose's eyes widened, her expression sympathetic.
"I found out by accident," I continued.
"I overheard him talking to his doctor. He had only three weeks left. I was heartbroken, but he made me promise not to tell anyone. He wanted to spend his last moments in peace, without burdening the family."
I paused, collecting my thoughts.
"We traveled to the States, just the two of us. He died on a glorious day, surrounded by sunshine and peace. I was with him, holding his hand. It was just us, in that moment."
Rose's eyes filled with tears, and I knew she understood.
"I told everyone after he passed away, but Rachel... she couldn't forgive me. She felt I had betrayed her, kept her from saying goodbye to her own father. And she's right. I did what I thought was best at the time, but I understand why she hates me."
Rose reached out, her hand brushing against mine.
"I'm sorry, Adrian. I had no idea."
I smiled wryly.
"That's why I've been so cold, Rose. I've been carrying this guilt around for so long. But being with you... it's like a weight's been lifted off my shoulders."
She shook her head.
"I have been a monster. I've been a cruel person, selfish, arrogant, mean and --".
She quickly hushed me.
"You're just perfect for me Adrian, I want to know you".
She continued after she exhales.
"You hired me even though I'm inexperienced, you bought me meds when I had diarrhea at the Chinese restaurant, you saved me countless times and you are always there when I needed someone the most. Most of it, you foot Noel's bill even though I never asked. I'm so thankful ".
She moved closer and gave me a warm hug.
"I would have ended my life a longtime if it weren't for you. You're a good person Adrian".
She patted my back and her words soothed me. It made me feel great.
As I look at Rose, I realize that I want her by my side, not just as a contractual obligation, but as my true partner.
I want to explore the depths of our connection, to see where this spark between us could lead.
But time is running out - the contract is almost signed, and I fear that once it's done, she'll be locked into this arrangement, and I'll lose my chance to make her mine, truly mine.
I need to find a way to convince her to stay with me, to choose me, not just out of duty, but out of love.
Will she stay with me even if the earth crumbles?
...
As I watched Rose sign the contract, a mix of emotions swirled inside me.
Relief, excitement, and a hint of sadness.
Six months.
It was a finite amount of time, and I couldn't help but wish for more.
I looked at Rose, her beautiful smile and sparkling eyes, and my heart ached.
I wanted her by my side forever, not just for a brief period. I wanted to wake up every morning with her, to explore the world together, to build a life filled with love and laughter.
But I knew I couldn't ask for that. Not yet, at least. She had agreed to this arrangement, and I had to respect her boundaries.
No intimacy, no romance. Just a business deal.
I sighed inwardly, feeling a pang of regret.
I had hoped that somehow, someway, she would see beyond the contract and feel the same connection I did. But for now, I had to be content with what we had.
"Six months,"
I whispered to myself, the words feeling like a countdown to the end of something beautiful.
But I pushed the thought aside and smiled, taking Rose's hand in mine.
"Welcome to our little arrangement, my dear. I promise you, it will be worth it."
Little did I know, I was making a promise to myself, too.
To make the most of these six months, to show Rose that I was more than just a contract, and to hope that somehow, she would fall in love with me, too.
And I will derive the happiness I longed for.
