Unexpected Jealousy

684 Words
The office party was in full swing, lights dimmed, music low, laughter floating in the background. Adrian leaned against the wall near the bar, nursing a glass of whiskey, scanning the crowd without really seeing it. His attention was drawn, inevitably, to Isabella. She moved gracefully across the room, laughter bright, hand brushing a male colleague as they discussed campaign results. Adrian’s chest tightened unexpectedly. It was a strange, bitter sensation—jealousy, raw and uninvited, creeping in like a storm he hadn’t anticipated. He forced himself to look away, sipping the whiskey, telling himself it didn’t matter. She wasn’t his—at least, not yet. But the heat in his chest said otherwise. Every laugh she shared, every smile directed at someone else, made his grip on the glass tighten. Meanwhile, Isabella noticed him standing off to the side, eyes dark and focused. She felt a strange flicker of awareness at the intensity in his gaze, though she pretended to focus on the conversation in front of her. She noticed subtle shifts—his jaw clenched, his posture rigid, a faint flare of tension in his expression. Adrian watched her laugh again, and the sharp sting of possessiveness cut deeper. He hadn’t realized how much he wanted her until the thought of someone else drawing her attention made him uneasy. It was irrational, yes, but undeniable. “Blackwood,” a colleague greeted her, oblivious to the electric undercurrent swirling around them. “Care to dance?” She hesitated, then shook her head politely. “I’m good, thanks,” she said, but her eyes flicked toward Adrian. He noticed the glance, the brief acknowledgment, and a pulse of something darker surged within him. Desire mixed with possessiveness, making his chest thrum. He couldn’t—wouldn’t—let anyone else come close to her. Later, as she moved through the crowd, Adrian caught her attention with a deliberate glance. Her eyes met his, and she saw it there: the barely restrained possessiveness, the smoldering intensity. Her heart skipped a beat, realizing that despite his calm, controlled exterior, he felt deeply—fiercely—for her. Isabella excused herself from the conversation and made her way to him, brushing past partygoers with a sense of purpose. “You’re… intense tonight,” she murmured, voice low, teasing but edged with curiosity. “I saw,” he said, voice rough, low. “And I don’t like it.” “Don’t like what?” she asked, arching a brow, though a faint flush colored her cheeks. “You,” he admitted, a hint of frustration in his tone. “With someone else. Laughing. Talking. Even pretending I’m not watching.” Her lips curved into a sly smile. “You’re jealous?” “Infuriatingly so,” he said, stepping closer, lowering his voice. “And it’s… distracting.” Her hand found his, brushing against his fingers in a subtle, deliberate touch. “You don’t have to worry,” she whispered. “I’m here with you.” Adrian’s chest tightened, the possessiveness shifting to a deep, consuming desire. “Good,” he murmured, pressing a fleeting kiss to her temple, just enough to stake a claim without overstepping. “Because I don’t… I can’t share you. Not like this.” She tilted her head, eyes darkening with challenge and amusement. “Maybe you don’t have to,” she said softly. “Maybe we can just… see where this goes. Together.” The tension between them thickened, charged with jealousy, desire, and unspoken understanding. Adrian realized that these flashes of possessiveness weren’t just about pride—they were proof of how deeply he cared, how much he wanted her. And Isabella realized that his intensity, the raw need hidden behind his composure, mirrored her own feelings—her own longing to claim what had become undeniably theirs. As they moved closer in the dimly lit room, hands brushing, hearts racing, they both understood something crucial: jealousy wasn’t just a warning—it was proof that their connection had become more than lust, more than flirtation. It was real, and it was urgent.
