Pulling Back

713 Words
The office felt colder today, though the sun poured through the windows like any other morning. Adrian sat at his desk, staring at the campaign report in front of him, but his thoughts weren’t on work. They were on her—Isabella Rossi. The memory of last night’s kiss burned in his chest, a mixture of desire, thrill, and frustration that refused to fade. He scolded himself silently. She was his rival. A professional adversary. Crossing that line—letting desire take over—was reckless. And yet, he couldn’t deny the pull that had drawn them together, even against their better judgment. Isabella entered the office, her posture impeccable, her expression composed as always. But Adrian noticed the faint flush in her cheeks, the subtle tremor in her hands as she set her coffee cup down. She avoided his gaze, eyes fixed firmly on her laptop, fingers flying over the keyboard with practiced efficiency. He wanted to reach out. To close the distance. To brush her hair behind her ear, to capture her lips again. But pride and the weight of logic kept him rooted in place. “Blackwood,” she said, voice measured, professional. “The final edits for the presentation are here. I’ve organized everything, and it’s ready for review.” “Thanks,” he replied, voice neutral. He didn’t look up, though every instinct screamed at him to meet her gaze. They worked side by side, meticulously reviewing charts, slides, and copy, but the silence was heavier than usual. Not uncomfortable, exactly, but charged—a tension neither could break without shattering the fragile equilibrium between them. Adrian noticed the little things: the way she clenched her jaw when she disagreed with a phrasing, the subtle bite of her lower lip as she focused, the way her shoulder brushed his when reaching for a pen. Each movement reminded him of the kiss, of the heat that had passed between them, and the temptation he was trying so hard to resist. Isabella, for her part, was equally aware. Every glance Adrian stole at her, every casual brush of his hand, made her pulse quicken. Yet she maintained her composure, burying her desire beneath layers of professionalism. Guilt gnawed at her; they had crossed a line, and she wasn’t ready to admit how much she wanted to do it again. “Everything looks correct,” she said finally, eyes still fixed on her screen. Her voice was calm, but Adrian caught the subtle tremor in it. “Yes,” he agreed, his tone equally controlled. But inside, he was fighting a war of desire versus reason. They worked in silence for another hour, both careful not to make any moves that could betray the lingering fire between them. Each small touch, accidental or not, set pulses racing, but neither acted. Pride dictated restraint, but the tension only grew. Finally, Isabella stood, closing her laptop with a snap that echoed in the quiet office. “I should get going,” she said, smoothing her skirt, regaining composure. “We’ll finish this tomorrow.” Adrian nodded, swallowing hard. “Tomorrow,” he echoed, his voice low. Inside, he ached to tell her to stay, to forget everything else, to give in to what had sparked between them last night. But he didn’t. Pride—and the awareness of how complicated their relationship had become—kept his hands on the desk, unmoving. She hesitated at the door, just for a heartbeat, eyes flicking toward him. Neither said anything. The unspoken understanding was clear: desire burned hot, but it would be restrained, at least for now. When the door closed behind her, Adrian leaned back in his chair, rubbing his face. Frustration and longing warred within him. He hated the restraint, hated that a kiss had left him so unsettled, yet he understood why they couldn’t act on it—at least, not yet. He knew one thing: pulling back didn’t diminish the fire. If anything, it made it burn brighter, sharper, hungrier. And he suspected Isabella felt the same. Tomorrow, the battle would resume—not just the professional one, but the war of desire, tension, and unspoken attraction that neither could ignore. For now, restraint was their only ally. But only barely.
