The Eleventh Hour

The countdown to extinction hadn't been a whisper; it had been a roar. The underground cell, cold and lifeless just days before, had mutated into a furnace of searing heat. Sierra lay on her side, her body drenched in the hot, sticky film of feverish sweat that slicked her pale skin. Her hybrid nature was exposed and vulnerable now that the poisonous herbs that had kept her biological systems suppressed were fully expelled. It made her an easy victim of the surging, violently powerful fated-mate bond. Each breath she inhaled scraped across her raw, blistered throat like shattered glass. Her vampiric fangs throbbed against the thin, bloodless flesh of her lower lip with a painful, dull ache. The faint taste of Kaelen's Alpha blood from the night before hadn't sated the desperate ache; it had simply stoked the flames. Her internal beast howled and raged, clawing at her sanity, demanding the thick, decadent iron of her Supreme Commander's veins. "Just... One... More minute..." she gasped, the words a raspy rasp against the dirt floor, her eyes the faint, dim pulse of ruby light in the Stygian darkness. She knew she was battling a losing war with her own physiology, and she was already on the verge of surrender. Then, the ground vibrated, the solid stone foundation of her cell humming and rattling as an immense, resonant boom shook her to the core. Above her, high in the darkness, the thick iron gates of Blackwood Manor had just been smashed in. The low-pitched, mechanical growl of dozens of powerful military vehicles echoed down through the vents, accompanied by the sharp, rhythmic clap of marching boots on iron, like a metal heartbeat. Lord Vance and the High Council's silver legion were coming to collect their hybrid specimen's remains. Down in the shallow corridor, the massive, rusted iron bolts of Sierra's cell door wrenched back with a thunderous CLACK. The door swung open. Kaelen stood silhouetted against the light from the hallway, his body instantly radiating a powerful aura of immediate battle readiness. He wore his standard dark military uniform, the gold buttons glinting on the heavy fabric, but his tailored black coat hung open, the hardened contours of his scarred chest exposed. His normally fiery amber eyes were dark, completely eclipsed by the burning, feral fury of his unleashed inner beast. "They're here, Sierra," he rumbled, his deep, sonorous voice vibrating through her body, making her ache and tremble. He didn't pause for a response. Kaelen strode across the narrow confines of the cell and dropped to his knee, violently wrenching her shuddering form up by the arms. As her pale flesh met his massive, calloused ones, a blinding flash of high-voltage electricity coursed through her veins, tearing down the last remaining walls of her internal defenses. "Vance has fifty silver legion warriors arrayed across my courtyard," Kaelen rasped, lowering his face until his hot breath teased her trembling lips. His fingers tightened their bruising grip around the soft flesh of her upper arms, lifting her completely off the floor. "He wants your surrender and possession. He has brought the silver chains and the execution stake. If I carry you out of this place now, you'll be ashes by sunrise." "Then... Give me to them," Sierra choked out, her fingers clawing at his broad lapels, using his imposing strength as a support structure against her own crumbling body. Her fangs were visible, shimmering with saliva, just inches from his. "It's better than... Remaining your captive." "Silence!" Kaelen roared, the sound echoing so violently off the stone walls that Sierra recoiled instinctively against his massive chest. He drew her body in tighter, crushing her breasts against the hard granite of his pectoral muscles. The intoxicating smell of cedar and rain, rich with the primitive essence of his dominant beast, flooded her starving senses, driving a primitive need deep into her bones. Her hips nudged against his, her lower abdomen tightening and aching for his possession, a terrifyingly urgent desire. "I do not offer what belongs to my beast," Kaelen snarled, his thumb snapping out to hook under her chin and yank her head up, forcing her eyes to meet his. His black pupils dilated to swallow his entire eye, tracking the pulsing red of her own irises with predatory focus. "You think this is bravery, little hybrid? Your body is turning on you because you're fighting the mate bond, starving your vampiric half." "I won't... Submit," she wept, a single, burning tear escaping her ivory cheek and trailing down her finger as it traced its path into his palm. "I won't give you... The satisfaction." "You will submit to me tonight," Kaelen whispered darkly against her lips, his voice a low growl that sent a shiver down her spine. "Or I will slaughter Lord Vance and every warrior in his legion to ensure your obedience. Vance is waiting for you in the grand hall. You will stand by my side and pretend you are my obedient, devoted mate. If you dare to falter, if you show them even a sliver of defiance, I will level this mountain." Before she could formulate a retort, Kaelen tightened his grip, letting her chin go but sliding his massive hand down to cup her slender back. He hoisted her effortlessly, pressing her tight against his front with her pale legs trailing behind, and carried her swiftly out of the dank prison cell. As they climbed the winding stone steps toward the higher levels of the mansion, the sounds of the silver legion's metallic clanking and Lord Vance's arrogant pronouncements echoed ever more loudly down the corridors. Sierra pressed her face into the crook of Kaelen's collarbone, inhaling the intoxicating essence of him, her breath ragged. Even through the thick layers of his uniform, she felt the firm, rigid ridge of his aroused member pressed against her hip with every stride – a biological testament to her claim. They stopped before the massive, reinforced doors of the central hall, the twin figures of the elite guards snapping their hands to the handles, ready to swing them open. Kaelen tilted his head, his amber eyes blazing with a terrifying, possessive fire through the gloom. "Lock your jaw, little leech," he rasped, tightening his bruising grip around her waist. "The performance is about to begin."
