The last of the crystal rain from the chandeliers had clattered onto the stone, but all Sierra could hear was the frantic, thundering beat of Kaelen’s heart against the palms pressed firmly against her own.
He’d pinned her down completely. The sharp, hard edges of the council table were ruthlessly prodding into her back, while Kaelen’s considerable bulk anchored her hips to the dark, gleaming wood. His huge hand remained wrapped around her throat, not tightly enough to choke the life out of her, but with a hard, bruising hold of dominance that rendered her unable to move at all.
“Stand down!” Lord Vance roared from the edge of the dais; his armoured silver warriors surged forward in a wave of metallic noise. “Alpha Blackwood, the hybrid, has openly declared treason! Hand her over to the council executioners!”
“Touch a single hair on her head, and I’ll paint this hall red with your legion’s blood!” Kaelen boomed over his shoulder, never taking his eyes from Sierra’s. His alpha aura flared outward, hot and oppressive and so damn palpable the front row of guards physically flinched.
Their blades went suddenly still, silver and sharp and trembling.
Kaelen’s alpha power filled the hall, a crushing, physical presence.
But beneath Kaelen’s overwhelming power, down on the table, Sierra was a mess of raw, primal energy. Her hybrid biological nature had completely unraveled. Rich, heady night-blooming jasmine and something forbidden and metallic, iron and s*x and power, poured from her skin, filling Kaelen’s senses.
Driving him absolutely mad with hunger.
He shifted his hips, a solid, unyielding weight of muscle and bone, pushing a thick, rigid arousal against her thigh through the fabric of his uniform. The feral declaration that her rejection had only amplified his hunger.
“You pushed too hard, little leech,” Kaelen whispered, his lips barely a millimeter away from the rapidly pulsing skin of her jugular. His breath burned against her feverish flesh. “You wanted to make a scene in front of my enemies? You want to deny the silver flame for my bed?”
“I will never... Give you... My submission,” Sierra choked out, her fingers clawing uselessly at his iron-clad wrist. Violet-red eyes blazed in defiance, but her entire lower abdomen pulsed with a treacherous warmth. The mate's bond hammered at her veins, an urgent gold fire roaring at her to bend her knees, spread them apart, and begged him to tear her open.
“I don’t need your permission to save your life.”
With a growl, he shifted his hips, heavy thigh driving a wedge between her knees. Sierra gasped, her body utterly exposed to him as his hand clamped into the cheap woolen fabric of her jacket, and tore it open with a savage, ripping shriek, baring the alabaster of her throat and the top of her shoulder to the glaring hall lights.
“Kaelen, no!” Vance shrieked, finally comprehending the Supreme Commander’s plan. “If you mark a hybrid, the High Council will have your rank!”
“Then let the war commence.”
His fangs extended to their full lethal length. He pressed his mouth to her neck, seeking the pulse point, his sharp incisors sinking deep into flesh and then breaking the skin. A burst of blinding white agony lanced through her mind, a dizzying explosion of pure, primal ecstasy.
Her back arched violently off the table as his fangs broke the skin and found the pulsing veins beneath. The instant his Alpha venom mixed with her hybrid blood, the golden cord of the mate bond violently ignited, snapping into place with a high-voltage current that ripped through every barrier in her being, vaporising the last vestiges of her ten-year-old omega façade. Her inner wolf burst out in a submissive howl of surrender while her vampire side savored the intoxicating flood of pure power.
“Ahhh, god!” Kaelen groaned deeply in his chest, a sound of raw, unholy satisfaction as he drank, his throat swallowing the rich, potent nectar of her hybrid blood. His huge frame vibrated against hers, the newly forged connection locking them together for eternity. The sheer, biological assertion rippled through the grand hall, a shockwave of pheromones powerful enough to send three High Council elders to their knees, gasping for breath.
When he finally withdrew his fangs from her throat, Sierra lay panting against the mahogany table, her body utterly spent, her chest heaving. The bite wound was already humming with a protective heat. Kaelen rose to his feet, straddling her hips with his darkly triumphant gaze, a drop of her vibrant blood staining his lips like the apex predator he was.
“She is marked,” he boomed across the stunned silence of the hall, his voice an iron proclamation that would echo for a lifetime. “She carries the blood of the Supreme Commander. Protected by the ancient laws of the northern pack. Her life belongs to me.”
Lord Vance gaped at the bloody mark on Sierra’s neck, his face pale, his hands shaking with a mixture of fury and terror. He knew he had lost. To touch her now meant war.
“This is not over, Kaelen,” Vance spat, retreating into the shadows.
“You’ve married yourself to a monster. The High Council will return. And when they do, they’ll bring enough silver to burn you both.”
“I’ll be waiting.”
Kaelen growled, watching the silver legion retreat, heavy boots thundering out into the freezing night, leaving the great doors swinging open to the raging storm. He turned back to Sierra, amber eyes gleaming with a dark, insatiable hunger.
Slowly, he reached down and scooped her up into his arms, crushing her against him.
“The show is over, Sierra,” he whispered against her hair. “Now, I’m taking you to my bed, and we’re finishing what fate started.”
