Into The Dark

The armoured SUV came to a heavy, final halt as the massive iron gates of Blackwood Manor groaned shut behind them. Through the heavily tinted glass, the ancestral stronghold looked like a Gothic fortress carved directly from the black stone of the mountain. It was a place designed for war, heavily guarded by elite, silver-armored sentries whose amber eyes flickered with lethal awareness in the freezing night. Inside the cabin, the automatic deadbolts clicked open with a synchronised, metallic snap that made Sierra’s heart skip a beat. The door beside Kaelen was yanked open from the outside by a stone-faced guard, letting a blast of sub-zero mountain air rush into the vehicle. It did little to cool the blistering, suffocating heat radiating from Kaelen’s heavy body. He didn’t exit the vehicle to wait for her. Instead, his calloused hand violently clamped around Sierra’s wrist, his grip an iron cuff that brooked absolutely no resistance. “Out,” Kaelen rumbled, the single word an unyielding command that vibrated straight through her bones. He dragged her from the plush leather interior with effortless, terrifying strength. Sierra stumbled, her worn combat boots hitting the frozen dirt yard. Her body was trembling uncontrollably, her overstimulated hybrid nerves screaming from the continuous, white-hot jolts of electricity shooting up her arm from his skin-on-skin contact. She pulled her worn woolen jacket tighter around her chest, trying to shield her rapidly failing scent from the dozens of elite warriors standing at attention around the courtyard. Kaelen didn’t give her a chance to breathe. Keeping his hand locked around her wrist, he marched her ruthlessly past the bowing elders and straight toward the heavy oak doors of the manor house. His dark military coat billowed behind him like a shadow, his jaw-dropping, scarred chest fully exposed to the elements, completely impervious to the biting cold. “Alpha Blackwood!” A sharp, demanding voice cut through the silence of the courtyard. Sierra’s violet-red eyes snapped toward the grand stone steps, where an elderly, silver-haired wolf dressed in the formal robes of the High Council stood waiting. Lord Vance. His gaze was sharp, suspicious, and entirely devoid of mercy as it landed directly on Sierra. “Is this the creature?” Vance demanded, his nostrils flaring as he attempted to catch her scent from across the steps. “Our intelligence reported a hybrid spy infiltrating the laundry sector. The High Council requires her immediate custody for execution.” Kaelen halted at the base of the steps, his towering frame instinctively shifting to block Sierra from Vance’s line of sight. A dark, thunderous growl vibrated deep within his massive chest, a sound so fiercely territorial that the nearby guards immediately took a step back. “She is a prisoner of the Supreme Command, Vance,” Kaelen hissed, his amber eyes glowing with a feral, dangerous light that challenged the councilman’s authority. “She committed treason on my borders, which means her interrogation belongs to me. If your executioners want to touch her, they will have to file the paperwork through my blade first.” “The Council will not tolerate a hybrid hiding in the northern packs, Kaelen,” Vance warned, his voice dropping into a chilling register. “You have forty-eight hours to extract her secrets and produce a corpse. If she is still breathing in two days, the silver legion will march into your territory.” “Then I suggest you start counting the hours,” Kaelen snarled. Without another word, he violently yanked Sierra forward, bypassing Vance entirely as he kicked the grand oak doors open and dragged her into the cavernous, stone-walled interior of the manor. The heavy doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off the freezing wind, but the atmosphere inside was infinitely more dangerous. Instead of leading her up the grand, sweeping staircase toward the luxury of the upper levels, Kaelen turned sharply to the right, dragging her toward a narrow, reinforced iron door guarded by two massive Beta warriors. Sierra’s breath hitched in her throat, a sudden wave of panic clawing at her chest. She knew exactly where that door led. The underground cells. The silver-lined dungeons. “No,” Sierra choked out, digging her boots into the polished stone floor, her hybrid strength fighting desperately against his unyielding pull. “Kaelen, please. You know what I am. If you lock me in the silver cells, the suppressants will completely vaporise. The whole manor will smell it.” Kaelen stopped, turning his massive torso to look down at her. His face was contorted into an expression of pure, unadulterated dominance. He stepped into her space, his heavy chest ruthlessly pinning her against the stone wall of the corridor. “You should have thought about your scent before you publicly rejected my beast, little leech,” Kaelen rasped, his face inclining downward until his lips were brushing the sensitive skin of her neck, his hot breath sending a violent shudder down her spine. “You wanted to run from me. You wanted to take your fake passport and cross the border. Now, you belong to the dark.” He nodded curtly to the guards, who immediately unlocked the heavy iron door. Kaelen shoved her through the opening, leading her down a flight of steep, damp stone steps that descended into the subterranean bowels of the fortress. The air grew progressively colder, damp, and thick with the heavy scent of old blood and iron. It was a physical manifestation of his brutal rule-the graveyard of every rogue and enemy who had ever dared to defy the Supreme Commander. They reached the bottom of the steps, where a single, isolated cell stood at the end of a dim, torchlit corridor. The heavy iron door groaned open as Kaelen pushed her inside. The cell was barren, consisting of nothing but a cold stone floor and a heavy iron chair bolted to the center of the room. Sierra stumbled forward, turning around just as Kaelen stepped into the cell after her, his towering silhouette completely blocking out the dim light from the hallway. “This is your home for the next forty-eight hours, Sierra,” Kaelen rumbled, his pitch-black, dilated amber eyes tracing the frantic, ragged heaving of her chest. He slowly reached into his pocket, pulling out the small leather pouch of cash and the fake ID his officers had stolen from her room, dropping them onto the stone floor at her feet. “Your countdown is officially over.” Sierra looked down at her ruined future layout on the dirt, her jaw tightening as a fierce, defensive fire ignited in her violet-red eyes. She looked back up at the monster hunting her, refusing to let him see her weep. “You can lock me in the dark, Kaelen,” she whispered, her voice carrying a sharp, dangerous hybrid venom. “But you cannot force me to accept a bond with a monster.” Kaelen let out a low, gravelly purr that rattled through his ribs, a dark promise of the torment to come. He stepped back out of the cell, his massive hand gripping the edge of the heavy iron door. “We will see how long that defiance lasts when the fever hits your blood, little hybrid,” Kaelen growled.
