The freezing wind howled down off the northern peaks, rattling the massive reinforced panes of the master suite windows, yet inside Kaelen's private quarters, the heat was nearly stifling. Sierra sat cross-legged in the middle of the huge king-sized bed, her slender upper body clothed in a loose, dark silk shirt that belonged to the Alpha. The delicate fabric offered scant camouflage for the brutal, dark purple stain on her neck-a deep, jagged brand which throbbed incessantly with a heavy pulse which made Kaelen's dominance run through her veins like a drug.
Her skin was still tender from the savage silver alloy blistering in the courtyard, yet her hybrid accelerated recovery was fighting off the lingering poison with a ferocity she'd never known she possessed.
Her wolf, energized by the bond, was aggressively repairing her vampire tissue, an unseen war raging within which left her utterly drained.
With a heavy click, the reinforced iron doors were pushed open, revealing Kaelen stepping inside the room. He looked utterly disheveled in contrast to the pristine, untouched commander in the grand hall, his silver-buttoned coat hung loosely on one massive, scarred shoulder, his dark hair damp with the swirling mountain storm. As soon as his burning amber eyes met Sierra tangled in his sheets and clad in his clothing, his nostrils flared. A low, earth-shattering vibration rolled from his chest cavity, a possessive growl so profound that the floorboards beneath the thick rug shuddered.
"Border patrol just picked up a scout," Kaelen rumbled, the heavy door crashing closed behind him. The steel automated deadbolts snapped shut with a decisive, resounding clang. He moved towards the bed with a predatory grace that radiated a lethal, unstable energy, drawing all the oxygen from the room.
"Vance never made it back to the capital.
The bastard has stationed three silver legion battalions right at the edge of the Whispering Woods. They’re following your scent, Sierra. They know the blockers are gone. They know what's currently bleeding from your skin."
Her heart pounded against her ribs like a frantic hummingbird. Violet-red eyes flashed with a defensive glow. She pulled the thick fur blankets up to her chest, but could do nothing to hide from him.
"Then they know who and what I am.
A hybrid leech. They won’t stop at the border stones, Kaelen. They’ll burn your entire territory, slaughter your pack and reduce this fortress to nothing just for the chance to get their hands on me."
"Let them try," Kaelen snarled, reaching the edge of the bed. Without any hesitation, he stepped onto the mattress, his massive, muscular body immediately overwhelming the space until his shadow engulfed her completely. He slammed his palms down on either side of her thighs, trapping her beneath him as he lowered himself until the sharp, granite planes of his jawline brushed against her skin mere millimeters from her lips. The rich scent of fresh rain, cedar, and overwhelming alpha pheromones crashed against Sierra’s starving, exposed vampire senses like a suffocating drugged haze, making her head spin, and her fangs throb with a needy, terrifying need.
"I didn't mark you for you to cower in my sheets and wait to be taken to the slaughter, Sierra," Kaelen whispered darkly, his jawline drifting down to caress the uninjured skin of her collarbone. His lips brushed across her warm flesh and a jolt of raw, electric fire coursed down her spine. "I marked you because your blood is mine. If Vance wants a single drop of it, he will have to step over my rotting corpse to do it."
"Why do you care?"
Sierra gasped, hands flying up against his unyielding chest. Her fingers tangled in the thick, damp material of his shirt as she pressed, the friction of skin-on-skin igniting a liquid, treacherous warmth between her thighs.
She hated how readily her body betrayed her.
Hated the damned-fated-mate bond for making her crave his crushing weight against her. "You hated me. You called me a monster. Threw me in the darkness of the dungeon to starve.
You're a vampire hunter, Kaelen!
I'm everything you were born to hunt down and destroy!"
"Because I was a fool, fighting the inevitable," Kaelen rasped, his voice dropping to a guttural, rumbling purr that vibrated along her collarbone.
In one fluid, savage motion, Kaelen scooped Sierra by the waist, his powerful fingers biting into her flesh and his brute strength hoisting her up until her lap rested on top of his heavy, low-slung thighs.
Sierra moaned at the sudden, intense friction searing her core, the lower part of her abdomen clenching in a hungry, desperate ache that blew the last fragments of her mental defenses apart. Through the dark tactical fabric of his trousers, she felt the immediate, firm press of his rigid erection grinding against her center – a primitive biological claim of ownership that rendered her vision black. He wanted her, and he wasn't attempting to hide it.
"Look at me, Sierra," Kaelen ordered, his formidable Alpha voice laced with an unholy, dark hunger which brooked absolutely no refusal.
Sierra forced her chin up, her pulsing violet-red irises meeting his perfectly black, utterly dilated eyes. The sixteen+ slow burn tension filling the chamber crackled and melted under the heat of the roaring fireplace.
"Your wolf is calling to mine. Your vampire blood craves my veins and we both know it," Kaelen murmured, his thumb gliding to her lower lip and pulling it gently down to reveal her long, sharp fangs. For once, he didn’t flinch at the sight, but the intensity in his eyes deepened with a dangerous, obsessive fascination.
"Stop fighting the monster.
Stop running from the shadows. Let me see what you look like when you truly submit to me, Commander."
"I am not... A toy," she stammered, breath catching as his hand moved up her spine, his large palm cupping the back of her head and drawing her face closer to his lethal mouth. "I'll never be yours willingly."
"No," Kaelen growled, his lips grazing hers in agonizingly slow, teasing torment that mingled with her choked whimpers. "You are my weapon. And tonight, I'm going to claim every last piece of you until you can't breathe without feeling my mark hum in your veins."
He slammed his lips against hers, a deep, punishing kiss that shattered the ten years of her resistance. Sierra let out a soft, broken whimper against his mouth as her arms wrapped tight around his neck, her fingers digging into his damp hair while her fangs instinctively sank into his lower lip. The sweet, metallic tang of his Alpha blood exploded on her tongue and the newly formed bond flashed in a blinding flash of ecstasy that locked the vampire and hunter into a darkness deeper than any dungeon.
