Chapter Five The glass shattered before Makayla could react, scattering across the floor like her life. She stumbled back, heart hammering, eyes wide, as Lucas froze in the doorway, hand hovering in the air. Amira’s voice echoed behind her, sharp and furious. “I warned you! I told you this would happen if you didn’t stay away!” Makayla’s legs shook, but she forced herself to stand tall. “Stay away? From what? From him? From the truth? From everything I deserve to know?” Lucas ran forward, desperate. “Makayla, don’t” But it was too late. The room felt smaller, tighter, every heartbeat louder than the last. Secrets, lies, and betrayal hung in the air like smoke. And Makayla realized with a jolt: nothing would ever be the same. Amira’s eyes blazed. “You think you can just waltz in and act like nothing happened? You think you can destroy everything I’ve built with a single glance?” “I’m not destroying anything!” Makayla shot back. “I’m just… I can’t pretend anymore. Not after everything!” Lucas’s hands dropped to his sides, tension coiling in his muscles. “Stop. Both of you. Please. This isn’t helping.” Amira laughed bitterly, voice slicing through the room. “Not helping? Lucas, do you even hear yourself? She’s here. She’s standing in front of us, and you’ve been falling for her for months! Months! And I” Makayla cut her off, voice trembling. “And you? You let him fall for me! You, my best friend! How could you betray me like that?” Amira’s face twisted in anger and pain. “I didn’t mean to! I was trying to protect him. To protect all of us! But you, you made it so easy to fall!” Makayla’s chest tightened. “Protect him? By lying to me? By pretending you cared about me as a friend while this this mess was happening?” Lucas finally stepped between them, voice low but firm. “Enough. Stop pointing fingers. I take responsibility too. This isn’t just about her. It’s about all of us, and the choices we’ve made.” Makayla shook her head violently. “Choices? You call this a choice? Betraying me, betraying her, betraying yourself a choice?” Lucas swallowed hard. “It was never meant to hurt anyone. I didn’t plan to feel what I feel. I didn’t plan for any of this. But I can’t deny it anymore. I love you, Makayla. I’ve loved you from the moment I realized I couldn’t stop thinking about you.” Her heart caught in her chest. She wanted to hate him, to push him away, to scream. But the raw honesty in his eyes the pull between them it was impossible to resist. “Lucas…” she whispered, voice breaking. “This is wrong. All of it is wrong.” He shook his head. “I don’t care about right or wrong. I care about us. About now. And I can’t ignore it anymore.” Amira’s face paled. “You you can’t just say that. Not after everything. Not after the lies, the secrets. You can’t just ” “I can,” Lucas interrupted, voice sharp. “Because I feel it, Amira. I can’t help it. And I won’t pretend I don’t.” Makayla felt the world tilt. Her best friend, the person she trusted most, and the boy she couldn’t stop thinking about were all tangled in a web she couldn’t escape. “I I don’t know what to do,” she admitted, tears streaming down her face. “I can’t just forgive everything. I can’t just choose.” Lucas took a step closer. “Then don’t choose yet. Just let me be here. Let me show you that I’m real. That this us it’s real.” Her chest heaved. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to escape, to protect herself. And yet, she couldn’t. She was drawn to him like a moth to fire, reckless and terrified. Amira’s voice cut through the tension again, trembling with fury and hurt. “Makayla, you think you know him? You think you understand what he feels? You have no idea what this is going to cost you.” Makayla’s hands shook. “Maybe I don’t. But I do know one thing… I can’t ignore what I feel anymore.” The apartment door slammed open, startling all three of them. A tall man stood there, face shadowed in anger. Amira froze. “Dad…” she whispered. Makayla and Lucas exchanged a glance. Danger had arrived. And with it, the consequences of every secret, every lie, and every betrayal were about to crash down on them. “Amira,” the man said, voice cold and sharp, “I know everything. Every word you’ve lied about, every choice you’ve hidden. And I’m not leaving until I get answers.” Makayla’s stomach dropped. She didn’t know him, but the intensity in his gaze made it clear: he was a force to be reckoned with. Lucas stepped protectively in front of Makayla. “Back off,” he said, voice low but deadly. “She has nothing to do with this.” The man’s eyes flicked to her, then back to Amira. “She’s part of this whether you like it or not. And now… we deal with the consequences.” Makayla’s heart pounded. She wanted to scream, to run, to hide. But deep down, she knew there was no escaping this. Not now. Not ever. And as the three of them stared at each other, caught in a storm of love, lies, and danger, survival wouldn’t be enough. To get out of this alive, she would have to fight for her heart and maybe destroy everything she thought she loved along the way.
