Chapter Three
“You can’t just disappear and think this is over,” Amira’s voice cut through the quiet of the apartment like a knife.
Makayla froze, heart hammering. She had been standing outside, debating whether to turn back, when Amira’s words found her through the door that hadn’t fully closed.
“I’m not coming back,” Makayla whispered, voice trembling. “Not until I figure out what I’m supposed to do with all of this.”
“All of this?” Amira laughed bitterly, eyes glinting with anger. “Makayla, you’ve been in too deep from the start. You don’t get to step back now.”
Lucas appeared behind Amira, his expression unreadable. “Amira… please. Don’t push her.”
“Don’t push her?” Makayla repeated, voice rising. “You think standing there protects you? Protects us? You’ve lied to both of us! How am I supposed to trust either of you after everything?”
Amira’s lips trembled. “I didn’t know, Makayla! I never knew! You two were sneaky, secretive”
“Secretive?” Makayla’s voice cracked. “I was honest. I was honest about my feelings!”
Lucas ran a hand through his hair. “Makayla… we need to calm down. Listen to me for one second.”
Makayla shook her head violently. “No. I’ve been listening for months, Lucas. Months of lies. Months of pretending this doesn’t exist. You want calm? You want peace? Start by telling the truth!”
There was a silence, thick and suffocating. Lucas glanced at Amira, eyes dark with something unspoken. Then he turned back to Makayla.
“You want the truth?” he said quietly. “You’re going to get it. But be prepared. It might hurt more than anything else.”
Makayla’s stomach dropped. She nodded, trying to steel herself.
“Amira…” Lucas began, voice low. “There’s something about your past, something I should have told you both sooner. But I thought I could handle it. I thought I could protect you, Makayla, from what I knew.”
Makayla felt like the air had been sucked out of the room. “What are you talking about?”
Amira’s eyes widened. “Lucas, no”
“Shut up, Amira,” he said sharply. “This isn’t your choice right now.”
Makayla’s heart raced, every beat a painful drum in her chest. “Lucas, just tell me. I need to know. I can’t… I can’t keep pretending everything’s normal.”
He took a deep breath. “Amira… you’ve been hiding your involvement with her father’s business. The money, the… deals. I didn’t know how to tell Makayla. I thought it was best she didn’t know. I thought… maybe it wouldn’t matter.”
Makayla’s hands trembled. “Her father’s business?”
Lucas nodded. “Yes. Amira… you’ve been involved in ways I didn’t realize. And I didn’t want her to hurt you… or us. But now… it’s all out, and nothing feels safe anymore.”
Amira’s face fell. “Lucas… I… I never wanted this. I never wanted anyone to find out…”
Makayla felt her world tilt. Her best friend, the person she had trusted implicitly, had secrets big ones and she had been blindsided. And Lucas, the boy she couldn’t stop thinking about, had kept them from her, too.
“You lied to me too!” Makayla shouted. “You both lied!”
“I didn’t lie to protect you,” Lucas said, voice low. “I didn’t want to hurt anyone. I… I wanted to keep us safe.”
Makayla shook her head. “Safe? This doesn’t feel safe. This feels like betrayal, like… like a trap. And I don’t know if I can forgive either of you.”
Lucas stepped closer, desperation in his eyes. “Makayla… I don’t care about the past anymore. All I know is now. I want you. I’ve wanted you from the moment I realized I couldn’t stop thinking about you. And I can’t won’t let this end without you.”
Her chest ached. She wanted to run, to scream, to push him away, but the truth in his eyes, the raw honesty, pulled her in. She hated that she wanted him. She hated that she needed him.
“Lucas…” she whispered, voice barely audible. “This isn’t fair. None of this is fair.”
He cupped her face, thumb brushing her cheek gently. “I know. I’m not asking for fair. I’m asking for honest. I’ve been honest with you, now. And I’m not going to lie anymore.”
Makayla’s resolve faltered. She wanted to melt into him, to forget Amira, to forget the rules. She wanted to give in.
And then Amira stepped forward, tears streaming. “Stop it!” she cried. “Both of you! You can’t just… just throw this away like it doesn’t matter! Do you have any idea what you’re doing to me?”
Makayla turned, feeling a mix of anger and guilt. “Amira… I”
“No! Don’t you dare talk to me like I’m the bad guy!” Amira yelled. “Lucas, you’ve been lying to me too! And Makayla… I thought you were my friend!”
Lucas ran a hand over his face, frustration clear. “Amira… I didn’t lie to hurt you. I just didn’t know how to handle it. I care about both of you. But you two need to stop fighting.”
Makayla’s chest heaved, tears threatening again. “I can’t stop fighting! I can’t pretend anymore. I can’t watch him with you while knowing what I feel!”
“And I can’t pretend I don’t feel the same!” Lucas shouted. “Makayla, I love you. I can’t lie about that. And I won’t.”
Amira’s face twisted in disbelief and pain. “You… you love her? After everything?”
Lucas nodded. “Yes. And it doesn’t change how I feel about you either. But I can’t ignore my feelings anymore.”
Makayla’s knees weakened. She wanted to collapse. She wanted to run. She wanted to stay. All at once.
“You’re tearing me apart!” Amira screamed, her voice echoing through the room. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done to me? How could you betray me like this?”
Lucas reached for her, but Amira stepped back. “Don’t touch me!”
Makayla looked at him, pain and longing tangled together. “Lucas… what now? What do we do?”
He swallowed, eyes dark. “We figure it out. Together. Somehow.”
Amira backed away, shaking. “I can’t… I can’t be here right now. I need to think.”
And with that, she turned and fled, leaving Lucas and Makayla standing in silence, hearts pounding, breaths shallow.
Makayla turned to him, tears blurring her vision. “This… this is insane. It’s too much.”
He took her hands, holding them tightly. “I know. I know it is. But Makayla… if we don’t fight for this, we’ll regret it forever. I won’t let that happen.”
Her chest tightened, every nerve screaming. And she realized something terrifying: the world as she knew it had ended, and there was no going back.
Because love like this dangerous, forbidden, intense didn’t give second chances.
