Jenny stood just past the border, her arms folded tight against the cold, expression soft enough to fool someone who didn’t know her. The patrol had held her there, but she didn’t flinch when I approached, Chris and James just behind me. Her eyes flicked over them once before returning to me, and she smiled, small, almost shy. “Amber-Louise,” she said, as if we were old friends instead of whatever we really were. “I hope I’m not intruding.” I kept my voice even. “Border visits without warning are an intrusion.” Her smile didn’t fade. “I came with news.
