Chapter 3: The Tour

1242 Words
The sun had fully set by the time dinner was over, and the compound was bathed in the soft glow of moonlight. I was still buzzing from all the preparations and the evening’s events, trying to keep my mind from racing as I cleared the last of the dishes. The ceremony was only a day away, and the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. My thoughts kept drifting back to Lucian and the way he had looked at me earlier—how his presence seemed to linger even when he wasn’t around. I was about to head back to the kitchen when I felt a presence behind me. Turning around, I found Lucian standing there, his intense gaze fixed on me. The air between us seemed to crackle with a tension that I couldn’t quite shake. “Hey, Faye,” he said, his voice smooth and inviting. “I think you promised me a tour?” I smiled, feeling my heart skip a beat. “I did, didn’t I?” Lucian grinned, that same charming smile that made my stomach do flips. “I’d hate to miss out on it. You’re the best guide around, after all.” I felt a blush creeping up my cheeks as I wiped my hands on a towel. “Alright, then. Let’s get started.” We left the kitchen and stepped out into the cool night air. The compound was quiet now, the earlier hustle and bustle fading as people settled in for the night. Lucian walked beside me, his arm brushing mine occasionally, sending small sparks through my skin. I tried to ignore the intoxicating scent of him—woodsy and masculine, with just a hint of something darker. It was nearly impossible to concentrate. “This is the main hall,” I began, gesturing to the large, central building where most of our pack’s important events took place. “It’s where the ceremony will be held tomorrow night.” Lucian glanced at the building with interest. “Impressive. It has a lot of history, doesn’t it?” “Yes,” I replied, nodding. “It’s been here for generations. Every Alpha has been crowned here, and it’s also where we hold our biggest celebrations.” Lucian’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. “And where do you fit in all of this, Faye? You seem to be the one holding everything together.” I laughed softly, trying to play off his compliment. “I just help out where I can. Everyone pitches in.” “Somehow, I think you do more than just help out,” he said, his tone teasing. “I can tell you’re the heart of this place.” My heart fluttered at his words, and I quickly moved on, leading him to the two main houses where our highest-ranking pack members lived, including my family. “These are the Alpha’s and Beta’s houses,” I explained. “They’re closest to the main hall for obvious reasons.” Lucian nodded, taking in every detail. “And where do you live?” “I’m in the Alpha’s house,” I replied, feeling a little self-conscious. “With my parents and siblings.” He gave me a knowing look. “Must be nice, being so close to your family.” “It is,” I said, though my voice was softer. “Most of the time.” I led him away from the houses, pointing out the cabins where the pack families lived. They were spread out in neat rows, each one a home to different members of our pack. “These are the family cabins,” I explained. “Everyone has their own space, but we’re still close enough to feel connected.” Lucian seemed impressed by the layout. “You’ve really built a community here. It’s not just a pack—it’s a family.” I smiled at his observation. “That’s what we strive for. It’s important to us.” As we walked further, the training grounds came into view. The open field was dotted with various equipment, from target dummies to obstacle courses. “This is where we train,” I said. “The warriors spend a lot of time here, honing their skills.” Lucian’s eyes lit up with interest. “I’ll have to join a session while I’m here. It looks like a good challenge.” “You should,” I replied, unable to hide my admiration. “Our warriors are some of the best.” We continued the tour, passing by the schoolhouse where the younger members of the pack learned everything from history to combat. I explained how the school functioned, but my thoughts kept drifting back to Lucian—how close he was standing to me, how his gaze seemed to burn into my skin. By the time we made our way back to the guest house, where his pack was staying, the tension between us had grown almost unbearable. I could feel Lucian’s eyes on me the entire time, his presence both comforting and unsettling. As we stood outside the guest house, Lucian turned to me, his expression serious yet playful. “You’ve done an amazing job with the tour, Faye. It’s clear how much you care about your pack.” “Thank you,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. “It’s my home.” “It shows,” he said, stepping closer. “You’d make a great Luna one day, you know.” My heart skipped a beat at his words, and I felt a rush of emotions that I couldn’t quite name. “Lucian, I—” Before I could finish, he moved in even closer, backing me up against the wall of the guest house. His scent surrounded me, intoxicating and overwhelming, and I found it hard to breathe. Lucian’s eyes darkened with desire as he leaned in, his lips hovering just inches from mine. “I’ve wanted to do this all night,” he murmured, his voice low and husky. My heart pounded in my chest, my thoughts scattering as his words sank in. The world seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of us in the moonlit night. I could feel his breath on my skin, the heat of his body so close to mine. I was caught between the urge to close the distance between us and the need to pull away. Just as Lucian’s lips were about to touch mine, the door to the guest house swung open, and I jumped, startled by the sudden noise. Lucian stepped back, his expression unreadable as my mother appeared in the doorway, her eyes narrowing as she took in the scene. “Faye,” she said, her voice clipped. “I need your help inside.” I swallowed hard, my heart still racing from the near kiss. “Of course, Mom. I’ll be right there.” Lucian gave me a small, knowing smile before turning away. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Faye.” I nodded, unable to speak, and watched as he disappeared into the guest house. My mother’s gaze was heavy as she waited for me, but I couldn’t focus on anything except the lingering sensation of Lucian’s near kiss and the way he had made me feel. As I followed my mother inside, I knew one thing for sure: tonight had changed everything. And tomorrow, with the ceremony looming, I had no idea what to expect.
