CHAPTER 4: A HEART DIVIDED

1052 Words
Chapter 4: A Heart Divided Lena barely slept. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind an endless loop of what had happened in the courtyard. The kiss. Damian’s lips against hers, the fire, the hunger, the raw emotion that had threatened to consume her. And now, as the first rays of morning filtered through the curtains, she was lying beside Ryan—the man she was supposed to love, the man she had promised herself to. What have I done? Her heart pounded as she turned onto her side, watching Ryan’s peaceful face. His strong jawline, the warmth of his skin, the way his chest rose and fell with steady breaths. He was good to her. Safe. Reliable. Then why had she risked it all for one kiss? The guilt gnawed at her, but beneath it, something darker lingered. Longing. A dangerous, undeniable craving for something she thought she had buried long ago. The weight of her actions pressed against her chest, suffocating. She had to get out. She needed air. Carefully, she slipped out of bed, padding across the hardwood floor. She pulled on a robe and stepped onto the balcony, letting the crisp morning air cool her heated skin. But even out here, she wasn’t free. Because the moment she closed her eyes, she could still feel Damian. The way he had held her. The way he had looked at her, like she was the only thing that had ever mattered. And the worst part? She had liked it. Breakfast with Secrets By the time Ryan woke up, Lena had forced herself to push Damian from her thoughts. She was engaged. She had made a choice. And she needed to live with it. Ryan stretched, his muscles flexing as he pulled her close. “Morning, beautiful.” He kissed her forehead, his lips lingering for a moment. Lena forced a smile. “Morning.” He frowned slightly. “You seem… distant.” Her stomach clenched. Does he know? Can he tell? “I didn’t sleep well,” she admitted. That wasn’t a lie. Ryan pressed another kiss to her temple. “Maybe I can help fix that tonight.” His voice dropped into a teasing whisper, his fingers brushing against her bare skin. Lena swallowed hard. Normally, she would welcome his touch, but today, it felt different. Wrong. She pulled away gently. “I need coffee first.” Ryan chuckled, not noticing the hesitation in her voice. “Fair enough. Let’s make breakfast together.” Lena nodded, but as they stepped into the kitchen, her phone buzzed. Her breath caught. She didn’t have to check to know who it was. Ryan, oblivious, turned toward the fridge. “How do you feel about pancakes?” Lena’s heart pounded as she grabbed her phone, keeping the screen tilted away. Damian: Did last night mean nothing to you? Her throat went dry. She shouldn’t respond. She shouldn’t. But her fingers moved before her mind could stop them. Lena: It can’t happen again. The reply came almost instantly. Damian: That’s not an answer. Ryan turned back with a carton of eggs, smiling. “I was thinking strawberries, maybe some whipped cream?” Lena forced another smile, her heart racing for a completely different reason. “Sounds perfect.” But even as she spoke, her phone buzzed again. And she knew—this was far from over. An Unexpected Encounter Later that afternoon, Lena convinced herself that she needed space. Time to clear her head. So she took a walk through the city, letting the familiar streets ground her. But fate had other plans. As she turned a corner near the park, her heart stopped. Damian stood across the street, leaning against a sleek black car, his piercing gaze locked onto hers. She should have turned away. She should have walked in the opposite direction. Instead, her feet betrayed her. He smirked, as if he knew she would come. “You’re avoiding me.” Lena exhaled sharply. “For good reason.” Damian stepped closer, his scent—rich, intoxicating—wrapping around her. “One kiss, and suddenly you’re running?” Her pulse skidded. “That wasn’t just a kiss, and you know it.” He tilted his head, studying her. “Then tell me it didn’t mean anything.” Lena opened her mouth, but the words refused to come. Damian took another step, his voice dropping to a whisper. “You can’t, can you?” Her breathing turned shallow. This is dangerous. I need to leave. But he reached for her hand, his touch igniting something deep inside her. “Tell me to stop, Lena,” he murmured. She should. She had to. But instead, she did the one thing she wasn’t supposed to. She leaned in. And Damian kissed her again. This time, it was slow. Deliberate. A kiss that spoke of stolen moments, of years lost, of a love that had never truly died. Lena whimpered against his lips, her hands clutching his shirt as his arms wrapped around her, pulling her so close she could feel the wild beat of his heart against hers. He kissed her like she was oxygen, like he had been drowning all these years without her. And God help her, she kissed him back. When they finally broke apart, Damian rested his forehead against hers, his breath uneven. “Tell me you don’t feel this,” he whispered. Lena squeezed her eyes shut, her chest rising and falling with unsteady breaths. She couldn’t. Because every part of her was screaming the truth. She still loved him. And that truth could destroy everything. A Dangerous Crossroad Lena sat in her car outside the apartment, her mind a mess of emotions. She had kissed Damian again. And this time, she wasn’t sure she could walk away. Ryan was waiting for her upstairs. Ryan, the man she had built a life with. But Damian was the man her soul still ached for. Tears burned her eyes as she gripped the steering wheel. How could she be so cruel? So reckless? But deep down, she knew the answer. She had never stopped loving Damian. And no matter how hard she tried, no matter how much she wished it away— She never would. To be continued.........
