Chapter 1: The First Crack in Forever
Lena Carter stood on the grand balcony of the Crystal Haven Hotel, a champagne flute cradled between her fingers, her heart fluttering with anticipation. The evening was perfect—the city skyline glittered under the soft glow of the moon, a gentle breeze whispering secrets only the night could hold. Below, the gala was in full swing, a sea of elegantly dressed guests mingling, laughter and music blending into a symphony of wealth and sophistication.
Tonight was supposed to be about celebration, about the flawless life she had built with Ryan Thompson. A devoted fiancé, a perfect engagement, and a future that every woman envied.
Then why did she feel this unease gnawing at her chest?
"Lena, there you are," Ryan’s voice cut through her thoughts, warm and familiar. He slid an arm around her waist, placing a soft kiss on her temple. "I was looking for you. Everything okay?"
She forced a smile, leaning into his embrace. "Of course. Just needed a little air."
Ryan studied her, his blue eyes filled with love and trust—trust that she had never questioned until this moment. "Come back inside. Everyone’s waiting for you. My parents can’t stop talking about how stunning you look tonight."
She laughed softly, though the sound felt hollow. "You always say that."
"Because it’s always true." His thumb brushed over her cheek, sending a familiar warmth through her. "Come on, beautiful. The night is ours."
With a deep breath, she allowed him to lead her back into the dazzling ballroom, her mind set on shaking off the strange tension in her chest. But the moment her heels clicked against the marble floor, she felt it—an invisible pull, a shift in the air.
And then she saw him.
Across the room, standing near the bar, Damian Blackwood.
Her past. Her first love. The man who shattered her heart and disappeared without a trace.
Lena froze, her grip on Ryan’s arm tightening involuntarily. It had been five years. Five years since she had last seen those piercing gray eyes, since she had felt the burn of his touch, since she had sworn to herself that she would never let him ruin her again.
Yet, here he was. And just like that, her world tilted on its axis.
Damian looked different—older, sharper, more refined. His dark hair was slightly longer, tousled in a way that made him even more devastatingly handsome. He was dressed in a tailored black suit that hugged his broad shoulders perfectly, his strong jawline even more defined than she remembered.
He was staring at her. Not just looking—staring, as if she were the only thing in the room.
"Lena?" Ryan’s voice pulled her back.
She blinked rapidly, forcing herself to breathe. "Sorry. I—um, I thought I saw someone I knew."
Ryan followed her gaze but found nothing worth noting. "Anyone I should meet?"
She shook her head quickly. "No. Just someone from the past."
"Lena," a deep voice murmured from behind her.
She stiffened. No. It couldn’t be.
Slowly, she turned, and there he was—closer now, his scent invading her senses, a mix of cedarwood and something dangerously intoxicating.
"Damian," she whispered, her breath catching.
Ryan’s arm tightened around her waist instinctively. "Who’s this?"
Damian’s gaze flickered to Ryan, his expression unreadable. "An old friend," he said smoothly before his eyes locked back onto hers. "It’s been a long time, Lena."
She swallowed hard, every nerve in her body screaming at her to run. But she couldn’t. She was trapped in the gravitational pull of the man who once held her entire heart in his hands—and crushed it.
Ryan extended a hand, his tone polite but firm. "Ryan Thompson. Lena’s fiancé."
Damian’s lips quirked slightly as he took Ryan’s hand. "Damian Blackwood. I suppose congratulations are in order."
"Thank you," Ryan said, pulling Lena closer. "We’re getting married in a few months."
Damian’s expression remained unreadable, but there was something in his gaze that sent a shiver down her spine.
"Well," Damian said smoothly, eyes never leaving hers, "I look forward to catching up, Lena."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving behind an air of unresolved history that made her heart race.
Ryan glanced at her. "You okay?"
Lena forced a smile. "Yeah. Just...unexpected."
But deep down, she knew the truth.
The past she thought she had buried had just walked back into her life.
And it wasn’t going to leave quietly.
