What's Mine

JUSTIN’S POV “Hello, Charles speaking.” “Hey, Charles. It’s Justin. I had a rather unexpected visit from Rena yesterday.” There was a long pause on the line, followed by a tired groan and the sound of movement, as though he was already calling for someone to fetch his daughter before I had even finished my sentence. “What the hell has she done this time, Justin?” he asked, his voice heavy with dread. “To be honest, I’m afraid to f*****g think about it.” I let out a short chuckle, already knowing the man was at the end of his patience. Keeping Rena in line had always been a losing battle. She had been spoiled rotten as a child, and somehow that entitlement had only grown sharper with age. “Well…” I sighed, shaking my head even though he couldn’t see me. “She showed up at my house yesterday morning demanding that I pick a best man for our wedding.” Silence. Then, “Justin, what the hell are you talking about?” “That was my exact reaction,” I replied calmly. “But apparently your daughter decided to go behind my back and arrange a surprise wedding, hoping it would force my hand and change my mind.” “She did what?” Charles yelled into the phone, his voice so loud I instinctively pulled it away from my ear. I laughed under my breath, though there was nothing amusing about the situation. “Oh, she really did. And when she didn’t get the response she wanted, she threw one of her famous tantrums. Screaming, crying, tossing things around. You know the usual.” “I don’t f*****g believe this,” he snapped. “This is too much. I swear I’m going to kill her. I’ve had enough of this bullshit. I’m so sorry, Justin. She’s as crazy as her f*****g mother. I’ll make sure she never bothers you again.” “Thanks, Charles. I’d really appreciate that. Because next time, I won’t be so forgiving. She even insulted my lover, which, as you can imagine, pissed me off greatly. So I slapped her and dumped her sorry ass on the stoop and told her to get off my property or I’d have her thrown off.” He sighed and cursed under his breath. It was clear Rena was driving him up the wall—she was a b***h, and a crazy one at that. “I’ll deal with her. And again, I’m really sorry about all this s**t. I’ll see you around. The spoiled b***h is on her way, so I have to go.” With that, the line went dead. I replaced the receiver, chuckled, and shook my head as I walked out of my office. Now to go home to my sassy little minx. I smiled at the thought of returning home to jayla. For the first time in a long time, I was happy to go home. I really missed being away from her. I walked out of the office and was greeted by James, my driver. He opened the car door for me, and I slid inside. “Where to, sir?” he asked in a stoic voice. “Home… I just want to go home, James,” I sighed as the car pulled away. Today had been one hell of a long day. Not that anything significant happened,it just seemed to drag. I scrolled through my contacts, thinking about Jayla's parents. I wanted to know where they were and what they were up to. The way they just disappeared didn’t sit right with me. I had a feeling they were up to something. The thought that they were back to their old tricks had me slightly worried. Jayla was completely unaware of her parent's past which was probably a good thing, given all the people they’d pissed off. Hell, some were out for blood. But they were ghosts. If they didn’t want to be found, you weren’t going to find them. The car pulled to a halt. James climbed out and opened the door for me. I gave him a small nod in appreciation before telling him he was done for the night. Making my way into the house I heard Jayla laughing loudly, it wasn't something she's done in a long time so I was really pleased. Her entire world has been shattered within moments but now she seems to be getting used to her new life. Entering the den I looked around only to freeze at the sight before me my heart sank as I glared down to Jayla who was held in a compromising position by my brother Dave. “WHAT THE f**k ARE YOU DOING HERE?” I screamed as I shoved Dave hard across the room. “AND DO YOU WANT TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU HAVE YOUR DIRTY LITTLE HANDS ON WHAT’S MINE?” Dave just stared at me in shock. In all his life, I had never raised my voice to him, not once and now I was screaming. I glared down at Jayla, who seemed just as stunned. I reached down, grabbed her firmly by the arm, and pulled her roughly to her feet. “Care to explain why he had his f*****g hands all over you?” I hissed, making her flinch. She looked down at her feet and began to mumble. “Speak up,” I demanded. “W...we were just messing about. He tickled me, and because I was laughing so hard, I slid off the sofa and took him with me. W...we were just messing about.” I looked at her closely. I could tell she was being honest, but that didn’t change how angry I was. I didn’t want anyone not even my brother laying their hands on what was mine. I snapped my head toward Dave. He flinched under my glare. “Why are you here?” I growled. “I...I came to see you,” he replied tearfully, making me feel a little guilty. “And why were your hands on what’s mine?” “It’s like she said. We were messing around. She slid off the sofa and took me with her. I was just so excited to finally meet the girl who stole my brother’s heart. I really didn’t mean any harm, brother. I swear.” I watched as he wiped his eyes and continued to sniffle like a child. I felt awful. In his eighteen years, I had never once raised a hand or my voice to him. He was my only family, and I loved him dearly. But that still didn’t mean he could lay his hands on Jayla.
