BEST FRIENDS

"Excuse me," Bella called out softly, stepping into the warm light of the grand crystal chandelier. The silver-haired butler stopped on the landing, turning around. The moment his eyes fell upon her, his professional composure faltered for a fraction of a second. Standing there in the body-hugging, baby pink dress, her fair skin glowing and her dark, damp waves cascading over her rounded shoulders, she looked utterly breathtaking. She completely transformed the cold, sterile luxury of the hallway. "Ah, Miss Bella," the butler recovered quickly, bowing with deep respect. "You look... exceptionally well. The dress suits you perfectly." "Thank you," Bella said, her cheeks coloring slightly under his praise. She stepped closer, her expression turning earnest. "I wanted to ask... is William okay? I couldn't leave without knowing if he was truly alright." The butler’s eyes softened, a genuine smile replacing his formal mask. "He is doing much better, thanks entirely to your swift actions. The doctor has already examined him, administered some warm fluids, and cleared him of any immediate danger. In fact, Master William explicitly requested to meet his savior. If you feel up to it, he is awake and resting in his room." Bella felt a wave of profound relief wash over her. "Yes, please. I'd love to see him." "Right this way, Miss Bella," the butler said, gesturing down the eastern wing of the mansion. He led her past several ornate doors before stopping outside a large, heavy oak entrance. He knocked softly, and upon hearing a faint, youthful voice call out from within, he opened the door and stepped aside, allowing Bella to enter. Stepping across the threshold, Bella found herself in an expansive, incredibly luxurious room, though it was uniquely tailored for a twelve-year-old boy. To the right, a massive entertainment center housed the latest computer games, high-tech consoles, and virtual reality gear—anything a young boy could ever dream of having was right at his fingertips. But as Bella’s eyes traveled toward the left corner of the suite, her heart sank slightly. Tucked away in a separate, sterile alcove was a full suite of professional hospital facility equipment, rows of specialized cardiac monitors, and shelves stocked with complex medications. It looked like a private intensive care unit hidden inside a bedroom. But despite all this overwhelming wealth and entertainment, laying in the center of an enormous, plush bed was just a thin, pale boy who looked profoundly, heartbreakingly lonely. He was staring blankly at the ceiling, looking entirely swallowed up by the vastness of his surroundings. The moment the door opened, William turned his head. His pale face instantly lit up, a bright, genuine smile breaking across his features as he recognized her. "You're the girl from the pool!" Bella smiled warmly, her maternal instincts kicking in as she walked over to the side of his bed. "Hi, William. I'm Bella. How are you feeling?" "I'm okay. Just a bit cold, but Martha gave me three blankets," William said, his voice a bit raspy as he adjusted his position. He looked at her with wide, admiring eyes. "The butler told me you jumped right in without even taking off your shoes. That was really cool. Thank you for saving me." "You don't have to thank me at all," Bella said softly, sitting in the cushioned chair beside his mattress. "I'm just so glad you're safe. You gave everyone a massive scare, you know." William’s smile faded slightly, a heavy, mature shadow crossing his young face. He sighed, looking down at his hands. "Yeah, I know. I bet Daemond is furious, isn't he? He’s probably screaming at the security staff right now. Whenever something happens to me, he gets so scary. I hate it when people get in trouble because of me. I feel like such a burden to everyone in this house." Bella’s heart ached for him. She could see the immense weight the boy carried on his frail shoulders, surrounded by billionaires and steel-faced bodyguards but lacking a single true friend. "You are absolutely not a burden, William," Bella said firmly, reaching out to gently squeeze his small hand. "Your brother doesn't get angry because he's mean; he gets scared because he loves you more than anything. But you shouldn't have to worry about that. You're only twelve. You should be worrying about playing games and being a kid." William let out a bitter, soft laugh. "I wish. I just want to have a normal twelve-year-old life. I want to go to a real school, play football, and run around like the kids I see on television." He paused, looking at her hesitantly. "Will you... will you be my friend, Bella? No one ever really talks to me here except the doctors and the staff." Bella’s eyes shone with deep empathy, her dimples appearing as she gave him a reassuring smile. "I would love to be your friend, William. Official friends from now on." William beamed, the loneliness in his eyes melting away. But as the warmth settled between them, Bella’s curiosity flared slightly. "William, if you don't mind me asking... how did you fall into the pool? William’s brow furrowed, a look of genuine confusion crossing his face. "Honestly, I don't really know. All I remember is that I was sitting on the stone path in my wheelchair, looking at the flowers. And the next thing I knew... I was falling forward, suffocating, and drowning in the deep end. It must have been an accident. My hands must have slipped on the wheels." Bella’s gaze automatically lowered, tracing the outline of his legs beneath the heavy blankets, which remained completely still and unmoving. Realizing the reality of his condition, she felt a profound wave of sympathy. "I'm so sorry, William." William chuckled softly, shaking his head with a resilience that amazed her. "Don't be sorry, Bella. It is what it is. I was born this way. The doctors call it some rare genetic nerve disease. I've never been able to walk, so I don't really know what I'm missing anyway." To distract from the heavy topic, William eagerly pointed toward a massive, rotating mahogany bookshelf near his bed. "Look, let me show you my book collection! Daemond gets me first editions of every sci-fi novel from all over the world." For the next half hour, William excitedly talked about his favorite stories, his pale cheeks finally gaining a healthy, happy flush as Bella listened intently, sharing his enthusiasm. But as the clock on the wall neared midnight, Bella realized with a jolt of panic how late it had become. "Oh, William, I have to go," Bella said gently, standing up from the chair. "My grandmother is entirely alone at home, and she’s probably worried sick about me." William’s face instantly fell, his lower lip trembling slightly as he looked up at her with a pleading, desperate expression. He grabbed the edge of her pink sleeve. "Can't you stay just a little longer? Please? Just until I fall asleep? If you say goodnight to me, I promise I'll go straight to sleep. I just feel so happy now i got my best friend" Bella felt torn, her kind heart breaking at his puppy-dog eyes. But she thought of her fragile grandmother snoring in her quiet apartment, waiting for her. "I really can't tonight, buddy," she murmured softly, leaning down to smooth his hair. "But I promise, since I work for your brother now, I'll come visit you again very soon. Okay?" William reluctantly let go of her dress, offering a small, brave nod. "Okay. Promise?" "Promise. Goodnight, William." "Goodnight, Bella." Turning around with a soft smile, Bella hurried toward the heavy oak exit door, her mind completely focused on the logistics of getting back to her neighborhood at this impossible hour. She pulled the door open quickly, stepping out into the hallway with a fast, urgent stride. But she didn't even have time to take a full step. *Thud.* In her rush, Bella ran blindly, bumping directly into a solid, immovable wall of a hard chest. The sheer force of the collision knocked the breath right out of her lungs, her small feet slipping on the polished hardwood floor as she began to fall backward. A sharp gasp escaped her lips, her eyes widening in panic as she braced for the impact of the floor. But the impact never came. Before she could fall, a pair of incredibly strong, muscular arms shot forward with lightning-fast reflexes. They wrapped securely around her narrow waist, capturing her tightly and pulling her flush against a towering, rigid body. The hold was unyielding, instantly securing her balance and lifting her slightly off her feet. Bella’s chest heaved, her hands instinctively flying up to rest against his broad shoulders to steady herself. The fabric beneath her fingertips was expensive, dark silk. The intoxicating, maddening scent of expensive cologne, fresh rain, and pure masculine heat enveloped her senses in an instant, turning her brain to absolute mush. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs as she slowly, hesitantly looked up. Locking onto her gaze were a pair of piercing, brilliant emerald-green eyes. Daemond King Jr. stood over her, his strong jaw clenched, holding her pinned tightly against his chest in the quiet, dim hallway. He had changed into a tailored charcoal shirt, and the sheer, overwhelming power of his gaze trapped her completely, his eyes darkening as they traced the breathtaking sight of her in the baby pink dress.
