"Bella, wake up dear, you will be late!"
Granny’s raspy, comforting voice called out from the kitchen below, drifting up the stairs alongside the rich, roasted aroma of freshly brewing coffee.
Bella jolted awake, her heart instantly hammering against her ribs. With half-open, sleepy eyes, she blindly reached out and picked up the small plastic table clock on her nightstand. The digital numbers blinked back at her. *6:20 AM.*
"Dammit," she cursed under her breath, the sheet flying off her legs as she scrambled out of bed.
Panic completely erased the last lingering remnants of sleep. She had exactly one hour and ten minutes to get dressed, commute across the city, and present herself at the gates of the King empire. If she was late, she knew with terrifying certainty that Daemond’s legal team would dismantle her life before the sun was fully up.
She rushed into the bathroom, the pipes groaning as she turned the handle to blast herself with a hot, frantic shower. There was no time to linger. Wrapping a faded towel around her body, she stepped back into her bedroom, her skin still flushing from the heat. She stood before her vanity, quickly drying her long, dark brown hair. With practiced, frantic movements, she swept the thick waves up, twisting them tightly into a neat, professional French twist bun. She pulled one thin, deliberate strand free at the front, letting it slide elegantly over her temple and tucking it behind her ear to soften the look.
Reaching into her small jewelry dish, she fished out her tiny pearl earrings—a precious gift from her grandmother—and fastened them to her lobes. They were small, understated, and the only real piece of jewelry she wore now.
Next came the clothes. She threw open her closet, grabbing the ensemble she had frantically ironed the night before. She dressed quickly, pulling on a crisp white collared shirt and layering a structured navy blazer over it. She smoothed down a matching navy pencil skirt, pulling the fabric over a pair of sheer nude pantyhose before sliding her feet into a pair of classic black heels. Every single piece of the outfit had been meticulously hunted down from a local second-hand thrift store. They were slightly worn, but they fit her well enough to look the part.
She turned to check her reflection, but she couldn't fully see herself because her bedroom mirror was only a medium-sized rectangle mounted on the wall, cutting her off at the waist. She didn't bother wasting another second trying to tilt it.
Grasping her purse, she rushed down the creaking wooden stairs and burst into the kitchen.
"Grandma, I will just take coffee please! I am so late! I love you, bye!" Bella gasped out in one breathless, continuous sentence. She grabbed the hot coffee her grandmother had already poured into a travel paper cup, leaning over to press a quick, loving kiss against the elderly woman's cheek.
Grandma, who was standing by the stove gently flipping a skillet of scrambled eggs, turned around with a frown of maternal worry. "Eat a little, Bella..." her voice trailed off into the background as the front door clicked shut.
Bella sprinted down the front porch steps, her heels clicking loudly against the cracked pavement of the driveway. She checked her phone. The minutes were ticking away like a countdown to an execution. If she missed the 6:45 bus, she was completely doomed.
"Dammit, I am late. No, no, no..." Bella sighed, her throat tightening as she neared the edge of the main road, fully expecting to see the exhaust of the city bus fading into the distance.
*Honk!*
The sharp, sudden blare of a car horn made her jump. A neat, compact sedan screeched to a sudden halt right in front of her. The passenger door flew open from the inside.
"No you are not! Hop on!" Maggie yelled over the rumble of the engine, a brilliant, chaotic grin plastered across her face.
"Maggie! Thank God!" Bella gasped, practically throwing herself into the passenger seat and slamming the door shut. As she buckled her seatbelt, she looked around the clean interior in astonishment. "When did you even buy a car?!"
"Dad bought it for me! Second-hand, but it runs smooth though," Maggie chuckled, gripping the steering wheel tightly. She shifted the car into drive and slammed on the gas, navigating the morning traffic with the aggressive, fearless speed of someone who had a personal stake in Bella's survival.
The drive across the city was a blur of towering concrete and flashing traffic lights. When they finally arrived at the monolithic campus of King Company Global Enterprises, Maggie skillfully maneuvered the sedan down the concrete ramp into the sprawling employee parking area. They parked, killed the engine, and immediately rushed toward the glittering glass entry doors of Tower I.
Stepping out onto the main plaza, Maggie abruptly stopped in her tracks. Her jaw dropped as she looked up.
"Holy moly... how high is this building, man?" Maggie breathed, her wide eyes scanning the sheer, dizzying height of the reflective glass skyscraper that seemed to pierce the morning clouds. "I have never seen an office this high and modern-rich before. Man, I’m gonna have to give this one to Mr. King. The man knows how to build an empire."
Bella grabbed Maggie’s arm, tugging her forward with sheer desperation. "Come on! Move, or he might turn us into a matching set of stone monuments in the lobby. Hurry!"
They sprinted through the revolving doors into the cavernous, white-marble lobby. The security checkpoint was state-of-the-art, manned by stoic guards in tailored black suits. Bella’s heart pounded as they went through the mandatory security check, placing their bags on the scanner. Within moments, the computerized system chimed, issuing them their respective electronic badges according to their designated workspaces.
Maggie’s badge was a standard silver intern pass. Bella’s badge was a heavy, gleaming gold, stamped with a prominent *LEVEL 50: EXECUTIVE SUITE* clearance.
Before parting ways toward their respective elevator banks, they stopped near the center of the bustling lobby. Hundreds of sharply dressed executives hurried past them, but the two friends stood locked in their own private bubble of tension.
"We're having lunch together. Promise me," Bella pleaded, her voice barely a whisper.
"I promise. Cafeteria floor, twelve o'clock sharp," Maggie whispered back. She reached out, giving Bella’s hands a tight, grounding squeeze. She looked directly into Bella's terrified eyes, her expression shifting into one of fierce, unwavering loyalty. "You got this, Bella. You are so much stronger than he thinks you are. Do your best."
With a final, encouraging nod, Maggie disappeared into the crowd heading toward the lower wing lifts.
Bella swallowed the lump in her throat, turned on her heels, and walked toward the private, restricted VIP lift. The elevator doors were made of brushed gold, requiring her to swipe her high-clearance badge before they silently slid open. She stepped inside, the car completely empty, and pressed the single, isolated button for the 50th floor. The ascent was so terrifyingly fast that her ears popped, the digital numbers above the door climbing higher and higher until the elevator let out a soft, melodic chime.
The doors slid open to reveal the executive floor. The entire floor was a masterpiece of minimalist luxury—deep charcoal carpets, floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the city skyline, and absolute, crushing silence.
But the silence was immediately broken by a manic, hyperventilating figure. Mr. Louise, the newly appointed executive representative, was already pacing frantically in front of the elevator doors, clutching a thick stack of manila folders to his chest.
He looked up, saw Bella, and his face turned entirely pale.
"Oh my God, Bella, really?!" Mr. Louise gasped out frantically, his voice a strained, panicked whisper as he rushed over to her. "On the very first day of such a monumental role, you are late by exactly twenty minutes! Come on, let’s rush! The CEO is already waiting inside, and he does *not* like to be kept waiting!"
Bella gulped hard, her stomach doing a violent, sickening flip. Twenty minutes. She hadn't accounted for the security lines or the sheer scale of the building.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Louise, I—"
"No time for apologies, come on!" he interrupted, shuffling his feet quickly down the wide, pristine hallway. Bella rushed to keep up with him, her heels sinking into the plush carpet, making her feel like she was walking through quicksand.
They stopped abruptly in front of a pair of massive, towering double doors made of polished, dark ebony wood. Mounted directly onto the center of the wood, written in gleaming, heavily embossed golden letters, were the words: **CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER — DAEMOND KING JR.**
Mr. Louise turned to Bella, his hands trembling slightly as he thrust the heavy stack of files into her arms.
"This is everything for you to start, okay? Project briefs, daily schedules, private contact sheets," Mr. Louise said, his voice dropping into a softer, genuinely sympathetic tone. He patted her shoulder in a sudden gesture of kindness, looking at her as if she were a soldier being sent to the front lines. "Go now. Good luck, Bella."
Before she could even thank him, Mr. Louise turned on his heel and walked away with rapid, hushed steps, leaving her completely stranded in front of the monolithic entrance.
Bella stood entirely alone in the quiet hallway. The folders felt like a lead weight in her arms. Her hands were cold, her breath shallow and uneven. She looked at the golden nameplate, the memory of the previous night flashing violently behind her eyes—the heat of his body, the anger in his dark eyes, the blood tracking down his face.
She closed her eyes, taking one long, deep, stabilizing breath. She forced her shoulders to square and her chin to lift. She had to be strong.
Calming herself with a final, silent prayer, Bella reached out, turned the heavy golden handle, and slowly entered the door.
