The digital clock on the corner of Bella’s computer screen flipped to 12:00 PM.
For nearly four hours, her world had been reduced to a whirlwind of high-stakes corporate bureaucracy and unrelenting physical exhaustion. The glass cage she had been assigned felt smaller by the minute. Spread across her desk were dozens of loose pages, corporate profiles, and legal contracts. She flipped through the documents one by one, her eyes scanning the blocks of text at lightning speed, desperately attempting to compile a flawless brief on the tech acquisition.
But a perfect brief wasn’t all Daemond demanded. Every hour on the dot required a meticulously prepared, steaming cup of black coffee, served at the exact temperature he preferred.
Bella had spent the entire morning sprinting. She rushed in and out of the private executive suite several times, her heels clicking a frantic rhythm against the marble floors outside. One moment she was delivering sensitive files to department heads on lower floors, the next she was collecting internal mail, or running a mundane errand that Daemond seemingly manufactured just to keep her moving.
Finally back at her station, Bella practically crashed onto her office chair, her muscles aching. Her chest heaved as she desperately tried to catch her breath. Pouring a glass of ice water from the small carafe on her desk, she drank it down fast, the cool liquid soothing her parched throat. She leaned back, closing her eyes for a brief, glorious second of relief.
"Coffee."
The sharp, low command cut through the quiet room like a knife. Daemond didn't even look up from the sleek tablet in his hand, his long fingers scrolling through a financial graph with detached indifference. His tone was smooth, cold, and entirely unbothered by the fact that she had just sat down.
Bella’s eyes snapped open. Beneath the desk, she clutched her hands into tight fists, the fabric of her navy skirt wrinkling under the pressure. *This man is testing me. Oh God, please help me,* she pleaded silently, her gaze instinctively darting upward toward the ceiling in a desperate search for patience.
"I don't think the coffee will drop from the ceiling, Miss Swan," Daemond said, his voice laced with a cold, mocking amusement.
Bella froze. She looked toward his desk and realized, with a rush of heat to her face, that he was obviously watching her every move through the flawless glass partition. He didn't even need to look up fully to feel her presence, to track her exhaustion. It was a game to him. He was clearly delighted, feeding off the sight of her running around in her second-hand heels, completely at his beck and call.
She cursed under her breath, a silent string of words meant only for her own ears. Forcing her expression back into a mask of professional obedience, she stood up, gave him a stiff, tight nod, and rushed out of the office doors.
As the heavy ebony doors clicked shut behind her, a slow, unbidden smile touched the corner of Daemond’s lips. He finally looked up from his tablet, his eyes lingering on the empty glass workspace, thoroughly amused by her fiery, stubborn resistance.
Outside the executive suite, Bella let out a long, relaxing breath. She leaned against the elevator wall as it descended, taking comfort in the fact that, at the very least, he wouldn't be staring at her down here.
When the lift doors opened to the bustling, ultra-modern cafeteria floor, Bella scanned the crowd. It didn't take long to spot a familiar face. Maggie was already sitting at a corner table, waving her arms frantically to get her attention.
Bella navigated the crowded tables and sat down with a hurried, apologetic sigh. "Mag, I am so sorry," she gasped out, her eyes darting toward the cafeteria's beverage station. "I’m too busy. I can't stay to eat right now, but please, you have to eat, okay? Next time, I promise. I'm so sorry."
Maggie leaned forward, her face twisting into a deeply annoyed expression. "So, Mr. Big Shot Boss wants another coffee, huh?"
Bella nodded quickly, a weary smile crossing her face. She didn't even have to explain. Maggie, along with almost every other employee working on the upper levels, had noticed the spectacle. Everyone had seen Bella running in and out of the high-speed lifts all morning, rushing to the breakrooms to brew his specific blend, and sprinting back up to the 50th floor. To the rest of the company, it was unprecedented. No executive assistant had ever been ridden this hard on their first day. Some of the older staff looked at her with genuine pity; others, mostly the ambitious corporate climbers, watched her with burning jealousy, assuming her proximity to the billionaire meant something exclusive. A few malicious gossips just seemed happy to see the new girl struggle.
"I really have to rush," Bella said, standing up and heading to the counter. She pulled a clean paper cup, placed it under the dispenser, and began pouring the hot water over the dark coffee grounds, the rich aroma rising into her face.
*Bzzzt.*
The sudden vibration of her phone in her blazer pocket made her jump. Balancing the hot cup in one hand, she fished out her phone with the other and unlocked the screen. Maggie, unable to contain her curiosity, slid over and peeked over Bella's shoulder.
A text message from an unknown number—though she knew instantly who it belonged to—stared back at her.
> **From: King, D.**
> I am going out for lunch. I need the Tokyo meeting dates and times ready by the time I return. Also... Eat.
>
Maggie’s eyes widened, and she practically jumped in excitement, clapping her hands together. "See! The universe wants us to feast on this delicious menu! Come on, the big bad boss is out of the building. Let’s eat!"
But Bella remained entirely still, her eyes locked onto the screen. Her focus was entirely captured by that last, singular word. *Eat.*
A strange, confusing warmth bloomed in her chest, sending a flurry of chaotic thoughts building up in her mind. Why would he write that? Did he actually notice she hadn't eaten? Did that mean... he cared? Was he actually concerned for her well-being?
She stared at the text for a long moment before firmly shaking her head, trying to shrug the ridiculous thoughts away. No. It was absurd to think that way. Daemond King Jr. didn't care about her. It wasn't a gesture of kindness or affection; it was just a polite corporate gesture wrapped in the guise of an order. More of a command than a choice.
She let out a soft, defeated sigh, slipping the phone back into her pocket. "Alright," she whispered to Maggie, a small smile finally breaking through her exhaustion. "Let's eat."
Turning away from the coffee counter, Bella grabbed a tray and began adding food to her plate alongside a beaming, triumphant Maggie.
Down in the private VIP underground garage of the King Empire building, a sleek, armored black limousine purred to life.
Robert, a tall, burly bodyguard with a disciplined, stoic expression, stepped forward and opened the heavy passenger door. Daemond slid into the luxurious leather interior, his broad frame settling into the seat with effortless grace.
Robert closed the door firmly, walked around to the driver's seat, and climbed in. He adjusted the rearview mirror, glancing back at his employer, who was already focused on his phone, his thumb lazily scrolling through a series of encrypted files.
"Where to, Sir?" Robert asked, his voice deep and professional as he shifted the massive vehicle into drive.
Daemond didn't look up from the glowing screen, his voice flat and monotone, yet entirely resolute.
"To the children's hospital."
