*CHAPTER 5: THE LAST CONVOY*

The story broke at 9:23am.

By 10:00am, #GhostRoad was number 1 on Twitter Nigeria. By 11am, Channels TV was reading the Premium Times article live. By 12pm, Senator Sadiq Bello released a statement: "I have never met this auditor Kola. This is political blackmail by opposition."

But the videos were too clear. In one, Senator Bello's younger brother Sodiq was in a Dubai hotel counting dollars and saying "Oga road money don enter. We go grade 2km for camera, then leave am." The date on video matched the contract date.

EFCC could not ignore it again. At 2pm, they announced investigation. At 3pm, they froze Sodiq's accounts. Sodiq, with his jaw wired shut from Kola's swing, was arrested at Lagoon Hospital trying to fly to Turkey.

Kola's wife Aisha was moved by the Human Rights group from Abuja to a safe flat in Kaduna. She called Kola, crying: "They came to our house. Two men. They said they are from council. My neighbor Mama Nkechi locked me inside her house and shouted 'thief!' and they ran."

Kola's mother, who first had the bad dream, cooked white rice and stew for all of them in the office kitchen. Kelechi was taken to LASUTH. Doctors said his leg would not be amputated, but he would limp for life. Smallie finally slept, his stammer gone in sleep, snoring loud.

Musa sat with the Publisher, his ribs taped.

"You know you cannot go back to Abuja," Publisher said. "Bello has many friends. Some still in power. They will hunt you."

Musa smiled, his teeth stained with blood. "I never liked Abuja. Too much lie. I go stay Lagos. Start my own small paper. Call am 'Last Convoy'. For people wey no fit fight."

Baba T was offered money by Kadaria. He refused. "I no do am for money. I do am because for 2012, my son die because road from Ilorin to Ogbomoso spoil and ambulance no fit pass. That road na part of this ghost road. So this one na personal."

At 6pm, Kola finally left the office to see Lagos. He had never been to Lagos before. The case was now empty - drives with EFCC, copies online. His hand was free - no more handcuff. But he kept rubbing his wrist where the cuff was, as if it was still there.

He walked to the Marina, saw the water. He bought Gala and cold La Casera from a hawker. The hawker said "Oga, you look like person wey fight." Kola said "I fight small."

His phone rang. Unknown number. He almost didn't pick, thinking it was Bello's men.

It was the Auditor General of the Federation.

"Kola Adeyemi? I read the story. You did well. Come to my office tomorrow. We need honest auditors. We go protect you. And your promotion letter wey dem hold since 2019 - I don sign am. Come collect."

Kola stood by the water, Gala in hand, and cried again. But this time, small tears.

One week later.

Senator Bello was invited by EFCC. He came with 10 SANs. He was granted bail. But he was no longer powerful. His party suspended him. His Dubai property was seized.

The road contract was re-awarded. Real company this time. Kola was asked to be part of monitoring team. He said yes.

Musa, Kola, Baba T, Smallie, Kelechi met one more time at that Cherubim and Seraphim church in Ogbomoso. They thanked the old women. The old women sang and gave them each a white handkerchief for protection.

On their way back to Lagos, they took the same road. The wooden bridge had been rebuilt by the villagers. The bush path was now being cleared by government to become proper road.

Smallie, driving slowly this time, said without stammering: "This road go be good road one day."

Kola replied: "Yes. Because we no gree make them kill am."

Musa in back seat, holding his healed ribs, said: "Last convoy don deliver. Now na first convoy of new road."

They drove into sunset, one old Hilux, five men, no case, no fear, just Gala and story to tell.
