Chapter 2

988 Words
I trudge through the front door as the smell of bacon hits me like a tonne of bricks. "Morning mother!" I call as I pass the kitchen and race upstairs for a quick shower. I relish the feel of the hot water running down my back, soothing the sore muscles I was so quick to put to the test during my morning run. I quickly lather my hair in peach shampoo, followed closely by some conditioner and run a toothbrush over my pearly whites. Stepping out of the shower I grab a towel and head to the closet - I need a KILLER graduation outfit for today. Flicking through the closet I settle on a form-fitting black dress that finishes at a flirty length well above my knee with cap sleeves and a delicate gold chain belt. Paired with my favourite black ankle high-heeled boots, I apply a modest amount of makeup (I usually only apply very minimal anyway) plus my go-to lip gloss. My chocolate brown waves are cascading gently down my shoulders and actually looking somewhat decent this morning so I decide not to tempt fate and leave my locks alone. One last look in the mirror seals the deal and I head back downstairs. As I descend, I can hear hushed whispers coming from the kitchen and my inner wolf instantly perks up. I can hear the voices of my father, brother and my father's Beta, Andrew, as they are involved in a rather heated debate about something I can't quite put my finger on. Slowing my steps, I strain my ears and listen. "Patrol picked up their rogue scents last night around 1AM doing a sweep of the southern perimeter," said Beta Andrew. "And they were unable to track them? There are no leads?" queried my father. "Absolutely none at all..." replied Beta Andrew in a rather ominous tone. "Well what do we do now?" Maverick asked. Maverick is two years older than me and already well into his alpha training . Eventually when he is ready he will take over from my father as the Alpha of the Moon Stone pack but until then his job is to learn, observe and soak up as much wisdom as he can under my father's reign. The step I have just put my weight on lets out a loud creak and all three heads shoot in my direction. "Dammit," I say to Rosalind, "Now we'll never hear the rest of the story." I just knew my father would pull the daddy's little girl card and keep me in the dark on this one. "Be patient, I feel there is something much bigger coming," said Rose steadily and I instantly snort at her calm demeanor. First the strange dreams, now a reserved, calm inner wolf - I am definitely heading down crazy lane. "Don't snort Lexi, it is incredibly unbecoming of a young lady," scolds my mother as she grabs me by the hand and tows me forward into the kitchen. The kitchen counter is laden with food and I quickly swipe a bagel to curb the hunger pains that are silently gnawing at my stomach. I decide to dive on in head first. "So. What's this I hear about a perimeter breach?" fluttering my eyelids desperately at my father. "Nice try sweetheart. Don't think I have forgotten what today is madam, it's your Graduation and in a few days we will be celebrating your 18th birthday. Let's not spoil such a special time with depressing matters. Leave the rogue's up to us and don't stress your pretty little mind," chipped my father, his tone a clear indication that I should drop the issue and drop it quick smart. "Hmphhh!" I pout quickly, polishing off the last of my bagel. I wasn't going to get anything else out of them today. Beta Andrew and my father scooped up a few more handfuls of breakfast before heading towards the front door. "Are you coming Mav?" my father called. "I'll be right there!" responded Maverick before pulling me aside. "Don't think I don't know what is going through that little head of your Lex. Keep your nose out of trouble for a few more days," he seemed to plead with me, the level of concern in his eyes setting me further on edge. There really was something they were not telling me. "Fiiiiiiine," I said, an exasperated sigh leaving my lips and I continued to pout. My brother held my gaze, "and would you consider going to the pack gym instead of running through the territory for the next couple of weeks? Just until we get things under control again?" Wow, I thought to myself. Things must be serious. I give Mav a weak smile and nod my head. "Sure," I agree. I would regret lying to him later but I just couldn't quite let this one go, there was something I was being kept in the dark about and I was determined to get to the bottom of it. I watched Mav as he hurried to follow after my father and Andrew, disappointed for the first time in a while being the second born. I could feel my inner Alpha wolf frustrated with being held in the dark but yet there was still an eerie sense of calm that had washed over her. Things were not making sense, usually Rose was a sassy she-wolf with strong opinions. Her silence was unsettling. In an attempt to make the best of a bad situation, I grabbed my bag and rushed out the front door heading towards the assembly hall. Suddenly Graduation was a distraction that I welcomed as I hurried on my way. I needed a way to prove to my father that I was responsible and capable of stepping up to the plate when it comes to pack responsibilities and that new chapter was about to start right now.
