Chapter 9: Family ties
"Aunt Lucinda?" I repeated, my voice trembling.
But the woman before me wasn't the aunt I remembered. Her eyes, once warm and loving, now seemed to suck the light out of the air.
"Welcome, Emily," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "I've been waiting."
Ethan's grip on my hand tightened. "What's going on, Emily?"
I shook my head, unsure.
Aunt Lucinda's smile grew wider. "You see, Ethan, Emily's family has a... complicated history."
The shadows around us pulsed, as if feeding o her words. "What do you mean?" I asked.
"The Ravenwood curse," Aunt Lucinda began, "was born from our family's darkest secrets. Secrets I've kept hidden for years."
Ethan's eyes narrowed. "What secrets?"
Aunt Lucinda's gaze locked onto mine. "Secrets about your mother, Emily. Secrets about her true intentions."
My mind reeled. What could Aunt Lucinda possibly mean? "Tell me," I demanded.
Aunt Lucinda's smile twisted. "Your mother made a pact with the darkness, Emily. A pact to ensure our family's power and prosperity."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "No," I whispered. "That's not true."
Aunt Lucinda's eyes seemed to gleam with malevolence. "Oh, but it is. And now, Emily, you're the key to unlocking the curse's true potential."
Ethan stepped forward, his voice firm. "We won't let that happen."
Aunt Lucinda's laughter sent shivers down my spine.
"We'll see about that," she said.
As she raised her hand, the shadows around us surged forward, engulfing Ethan. "Ethan!" I screamed.
But he was gone, swallowed by the darkness.
Chapter 10: Shadows within
Aunt Lucinda's words echoed in my mind: "You're one of us, Emily. You're a Ravenwood."
I felt a chill run down my spine. Was I truly destined to follow in my family's dark footsteps? Ethan's grip on my hand remained firm. "Emily, don't listen to her."
But Aunt Lucinda's words had struck a chord. I remembered the whispers in my mind, the darkness that lurked within me.
"What if she's right?" I whispered to Ethan.Ethan's eyes locked onto mine. "You're not like them, Emily. You're strong, kind, and brave."
Aunt Lucinda's laughter cut through the air. "You're blind, Ethan. Emily's darkness is growing. Soon, she'll join us."
The shadows around us pulsed, as if responding to Aunt Lucinda's words. I felt a surge of fear. Was I losing control?
Suddenly, visions flooded my mind: memories of my ancestors, their dark deeds, and the curse's power.
"Ethan," I whispered, my voice trembling.
He grasped my shoulders. "Emily, focus. Don't let her win."
But the visions intensified, drawing me into their darkness.
I saw my mother, her eyes black as coal, whispering incantations.
I saw my ancestors, their faces twisted in malevolence. And I saw myself, standing among them, embracing the shadows.
"No!" I screamed, tearing myself from the visions.Ethan's arms wrapped around me. "Emily, I've got you."Aunt Lucinda's smile twisted. "The darkness within you will consume you. It's only a matter of time."
