CLAIRE I had no idea how long I was unconscious, but by the time I regained consciousness, it didn’t come without a price. The gnawing at my sides and the incessant pounding in my head has intensified. Breathing seemed uncontrollably painful because it felt like my entire ribs had been ruptured as a result of the accident. I might just be on my way to dying. “I think she is awake.” I heard a familiar voice by my side, a voice I had only gotten accustomed to recently, although not the voice I would have liked to hear first thing as soon as I returned from my journey of unconsciousness. I blinked my eyes open when I felt a figure hovering over me and they immediately came in contact with a figure in white. Did I die already? “Am I in heaven?” I managed to blurt the words out of my swollen lips. “No dear,” a soft feminine voice said. “You are in the hospital, you will get better soon.” Despite the heaviness on my eyelids, I still managed to force them open. I made eye contact with the man sitting by my bedside, and that was when the memories came flooding back in. I had gone off to the club after Aaron’s betrayal and drunk myself to stupor, and this was the consequences. “Relax, miss, I am going to administer some drugs to you so that you get better.” The female doctor smiled down at me. I knew she meant well, I knew she was going to make me feel better, I wanted to trust her. But at the same time, my anxiety was growing involuntarily. It was as if the gravity of the situation I was in was being made known to me as the moment dragged by. Aaron had asked me to sign the divorce papers, I was alone and divorced. Not only was I alone and divorced, I had lost everything, I had been betrayed by my step sister who made me believe initially that she cared about me. I felt like s**t. The emotions were starting to build up and it was becoming more and more impossible to control it. I had another breakdown which was slowly starting to progress to a panic attack. Before the situation could escalate, the doctor held me down at once and injected a substance into my arm. Almost immediately, I felt lightheaded and my eyelids grew even heavier, my consciousness was slowly dwindling. “Try to relax, miss, you will get better by the time you wake up.” The doctor’s voice echoed in my head as I drifted out of consciousness. And true to her words, when I opened my eyes later, I felt better, although the pain still lingered somewhere within. “Aaron…” I called softly when I managed to force my lips apart. “I would prefer you call me Richard.” The masculine voice cut into my thoughts. I tilted my head to see the same man from the club sitting on the stool beside the bed. The knots on his brows began to loosen gradually. “How are you feeling?” He flashed me a smile. My brows were raised as I forcefully lifted my body off the bed and rested my back on the wall. “Should I call the doctor? Do you feel any pain?” “No… I’m fine.” I cut in. “You are in the hospital.” He told me softly. “You had walked off into the middle of the road and let yourself get hit in a bid to escape me.” He told me, his voice bearing a hint of sarcasm. “My life is being ruined and I can do nothing but just sit back and watch.” I suddenly blurted out. His eyes stayed on my face. “It can’t be the end.” He suddenly told me. I shook my head. “You won’t understand…” “I do… perfectly…” His eyes stayed on my face. There was something about how he looked at me, there was something about the way his eyes pierced through mine, as if he knew something about me, as if he knew me more than just a woman who got hit by a vehicle. “I’m in utter mess.” I blurted out as I tried to forcefully lift myself off the bed. Concern laced his face, but I couldn’t fathom if it was real or if he was just pretending like the rest of them. It had been perfect with Jason, we had really been in love and had shared a lot together. I thought he loved me, but unknown to me, it was all just a facade, it was a ploy to rid me off my inheritance. ****** I was discharged from the hospital later in the day after the doctor certified that I was fine. Despite Richard’s offer to take me with him to his home, I wouldn’t budge, I needed to clear my mess first. I only accepted his help to the point of helping me book a hotel room and get fresh clothes so I didn’t have to change back into my bedraggled clothes. I had left the house without any of my properties. The event of the last day replayed in my mind as I took a cab to my office that morning. But little did I know that my woes were just starting. First, it was the cold welcome I got from the workers in my company, then I got to my office and saw the cleaver moving out my things. “What are you doing?” I questioned. “The new CEO has asked us to clear rge office.” I raised my brows. Without blinking, I brushed past the cleaner, and to my amazement, Liza was sitting on my chair as the new CEO. “What are you doing on my seat?” I seethed, tightening my fist. “In case you didn’t notice, I am sitting on my seat.” She drawled and let out a mocking laughter. “You are not very smart, are you?” She said as she got up from her seat and began pacing the office. “In case you don’t remember, let me refresh your memory.” She turned back to face me and flipped her hair backwards. “You have signed over all your inheritance to Jason. And since Aaron and I are getting married soon, is it not right that I take over the place of the CEO in his company?” She flaunted a diamond ring that I didn’t notice on her finger initially, the kind that Aaron used to propose to me. As if I had not been aware initially that I was screwed, it began to play once again in my head that I was screwed. “Now, if you don’t mind, I would like to continue my work. And you either leave peacefully, or I call the security to escort you out.” She told me, a fierce expression on her face. I tightened my jaw. I was about to create a tantrum, to order her out of my office, because it was mine, but it took the security showing up in front of the door to make me realise that I no longer had that right. The people who were supposed to take orders from me turned to me “I’m sorry, but you have to leave. I don’t want to forcefully lead you out.” The smile stayed plastered on Liza’s face as she stood there watching, waiting for me to be sent away. “Drag her if you have to.” She cut in. Surprisingly, my eyes were dry as I walked back to the hotel. Maybe my tears bank was dry now, or maybe I realised that this could not be fixed by crying. Especially after I had reached out to my lawyer and was told that it could not be reversed. What I felt as I inserted the key into the keyhole was no longer the familiar sorrow, it was anger. If I couldn’t have my life back, I wouldn’t let them have it either. I was going t ruin them both just as they had ruined me. But first, I needed to have a ground. I needed a solid foundation to stand on. Richard had given me his card to reach out to him if i needed anything, but I was skeptical, as much as I was scared, but I needed to take the bold step. I reached for the card in my bag and dialled the number inscribed on it. ******* It still felt like a dream, but it was happening, I was leaving the country to New York. Much to my surprise, Richard had offered to help me get back on my feet after I asked for his help and promised to pay him back. Although he had not been clear on what he wanted, but he did say that he would tell me what he required in return in due time. I was hoping that the due time would not be anytime soon. So, with his connections, he had helped me prepare my papers and made arrangements for me to fly out of the country the next week. And here I was, boarding the plane to leave the country. I felt a hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach as I felt the weight on my feet to indicate that the plane had taken off. Goodbye L.A.
