Beginning of her new life

483 Words
As Wayne pulls up to the curb, Jean is impeccably dressed for her meeting.  Wayne has been like a member of the family. He has always been at her side for as long as she can remember. She gets into the car and smiles at him while he is chatting about where they were heading. When they pulled up to the office building, he got out and opened her door for her. He handed the keys to the young man who was going to park it while he walked her into the building.  All the men in the room were lined up as if to the deli counter. At the head of the room, Stephen is seated in his imposing, upholstered chair. All heads turned when she walked into the room. Stephen again lights up when he sees his little girl. Jean is courteous as she navigates through the sea of men to get to her father. He is beaming with pride as she leans down and gives him a kiss on the cheek. All the men took their seats and the meeting comes to order. "I knew the day would come that I would need to pass this company on, " Stephen starts off the meeting.  "Today is that day." "Jean will be taking my position, I trust that we have no issues with this, right gentlemen?"  No one opposed. It was a formality for them to have that option. They had all been talking about this since the day Stephen came home from the hospital.  Stephen had arranged a meeting of the heads of all the families. He was announcing his retirement. This is where things went wrong.  There was a young man present that everyone knew as Eddie. Eddie had been Stephen's right hand for the last ten years. He was even dating Jean. He had a promising future.  Eddie thought that Stephen was grooming him to take over for him. When Stephen announced that Jean would be taking the reigns after she graduated, Eddie lost it. He shot his boss. He damn near killed him too, before Wayne was able to secure him and disarm him.  While Stephen was rushed to the hospital, Wayne and his boys took Eddie to a safe house. Eddie hung himself when his rage cleared and he realized that he had killed the boss.  All the men who were in the meeting that day went to the hospital. They were outside when she arrived. None of them wanted to tell her what had happened. All of them watched her conduct herself in such a manner that every one of them swore an oath to follow her till their death.  Wayne had taken charge of the situation by retrieving the boss's daughter and bringing her to him. As the men took their turn congratulating her, Jean sat beside her father. Stephen was beaming with pride.
