Chapter Twenty-Three
Adalia stood beside Isaac’s bed, tears wetting her cheeks. The crying wouldn’t stop, she sobbed and hiccupped intermittently. Her son’s heart rate monitor blipped steadily, the constant beep was a comfort and a horrible reminder of where they were. Why had this happened to her? Happened to them?
Isaac waned in front of her eyes, a shadow of the baby she’d given birth to in that exact same hospital. And Trent was gone. She’d forced him from her side because having him close was too much to deal with. The blame in his gaze, because he knew the truth. It was her fault, no matter what he said.
A hand clamped down on her arm. “Mrs. Dawson?” A nurse’s face appeared, one she recognized. Nurse Nancy’s smile was tentative. “I don’t know if you remember me –”
