SHADOWS OF THE PAST THAT START TO FADE The afternoon sun shone gently through the gaps in the window of the small apartment that Nadine Elizabeth now called home. Its golden rays danced across the wooden table, casting a faint shadow from the steaming cup of tea. In front of the large mirror hanging on the wall, Nadine stared at her own reflection. The girl she saw was no longer the weak one who had always been chased by the shadows of her past. No longer the girl who lived in fear. No longer the girl who waited for someone to come and save her. She had changed. Slowly, she adjusted the maroon dress that gracefully hugged her figure. It wasn’t a color she usually chose, but today, for some reason, she wanted to be different. She wanted to feel brave. A small smile formed on her lips. She never thought she would reach this point. Once, her life felt like a prison—trapped in fear, constantly haunted by the shadow of someone who wanted to control her. But now, she was free. At least, for now. She didn’t know how long this freedom would last. She didn’t know if danger still lurked from afar. But one thing she knew for sure—Nadine Elizabeth, as she was now, would never fall into the same trap again. --- NEW STEPS, NEW WORLD Sitting in a small hidden restaurant in the corner of the city, Nadine savored the aroma of freshly brewed coffee before her. This place was far from the city center, far from the bustling life she once knew. No one knew her here. Here, she was just an ordinary girl. Here, she was no longer the object of anyone’s obsession. For the past few months, Nadine had been rebuilding her life from scratch. She worked at a small bookstore, spending her free time reading and writing. She met new people, some of whom were even becoming close friends. For the first time in her life, Nadine felt at peace. Yet, behind it all, something still bothered her. An emptiness. A part of herself that felt missing. What was she really searching for? Was this truly the life she wanted? Nadine bit her lip, gazing out the window with a distant look. Perhaps, even with all this freedom, she still hadn’t truly found herself. --- A BEAUTY THAT HYPNOTIZES "Nadine?" A voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned and found one of her new friends, a man named Ethan, standing beside her table with a warm smile. "Sorry, did I interrupt you?" he asked. Nadine quickly shook her head. "No, of course not. Have a seat." Ethan pulled out a chair and sat across from her, placing his coffee on the table. "I noticed—you look different today." Nadine raised an eyebrow. "Different how?" Ethan smiled and looked at her deeply. "More confident. More... captivating." Nadine froze. Captivating. That was a word she hadn’t heard in a long time. All this time, she had always felt like a girl who was constantly running, a girl who had to hide. But now, someone saw her as someone different. Ethan’s smile widened. "Whatever you're doing with your life, keep doing it. You look amazing." A small smile formed on Nadine’s lips, warmth spreading in her chest. Maybe, without realizing it, she had started discovering a new version of herself. --- A WIND THAT BRINGS CALM—YET ALSO DISASTER That night, Nadine walked home with a light step. The night breeze blew gently, playing with the strands of her long hair. For the first time in her life, she didn’t feel afraid. No shadows haunted her. No footsteps followed behind her. She was truly alone. And for the first time, she felt comfortable with that solitude. Yet, something nagged at her mind. It had been months, and there were no signs that her past was looking for her. Had he given up? Or was this just the calm before the storm? Nadine bit her lip, trying to push the thought away. Whatever happened, she would never go back. She had found her freedom. She had built her own life. And she wouldn’t let anyone take it away from her again. --- On Sunday morning, Nadine stood in front of the bookstore shelf, arranging the newly arrived novels. The job was simple, but somehow, she enjoyed it. The bell chimed. Someone walked in. Nadine turned and saw Ethan strolling in casually. "You always come on Sundays," she remarked with a small smile. Ethan chuckled. "Because I know you work here." Nadine shook her head with a light laugh. "That sounds like an excuse." Ethan leaned against the shelf, his expression turning serious. "I won’t lie to you, Nadine. I do come here because of you." Nadine’s heart skipped a beat. "I know you might still be trying to find yourself," Ethan continued, his voice gentle. "And I don’t want to rush anything. I just want you to know that I’m here." Nadine fell silent. It had been a long time since someone truly saw her. Not as a girl who needed saving, not as someone who had to be controlled. Just as Nadine. A warmth spread in her heart. "I understand," she finally said, offering a small smile. They didn’t need more words than that. For the first time, Nadine felt like a future awaited her. A future no longer painted with fear, but filled with new possibilities. She didn’t know where her journey would take her, but one thing was certain—she would never again be the girl who lived only in the shadows of the past.
