PART 14 - AN UNEXPECTED BOND

965 Words
AN UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER Ethan never imagined he would meet Nadine under these circumstances. He had heard that she disappeared after her relationship with Lucas ended and after the ordeal with Adrian. But fate led him to a small café tucked away in the corner of the city—the place where Nadine was working. The first time he saw her, Ethan barely recognized Nadine. She looked different from the girl Lucas had once described—quieter, more mature, but also exhausted. The fire that once burned in her brown eyes had dimmed slightly, as if life had drained something precious from her. Nadine was busy wiping a table when Ethan called her softly, “Nadine?” She turned, her eyes widening in shock. But within seconds, she masked her surprise with a more controlled expression. She gave him a small smile. "Ethan? What are you doing here?" Ethan returned her smile. "Just stopping by. I never expected to see you here." Nadine nodded, feeling a little awkward. It had been a long time since she had spoken to anyone from her past life. "You look different," Ethan remarked after a moment. Nadine let out a small laugh. “Maybe because I’m not the same Nadine anymore.” Ethan studied her carefully. “And who is the Nadine you are now?” She fell silent for a moment, then shrugged. "I’m still figuring that out." She spoke lightly, but Ethan could hear the sadness behind her words. “Then let me help you find out,” he said, his voice warm and sincere. Nadine looked at him, unsure of what to say. But deep down, she felt relieved. A NEW LIFE, THE SAME NAME After that first meeting, Ethan began frequenting the café where Nadine worked. At first, Nadine felt uneasy. But over time, his presence became something familiar. He wasn’t like Lucas, whose relationship with her had been too complicated. He wasn’t like Adrian, who had tried to possess and control her. Ethan simply showed up, sat down, and listened. One night, as they sat on a park bench after Nadine’s shift, she finally asked, “Why do you keep coming here?” Ethan turned to her and smiled. “Because I care.” Nadine raised an eyebrow skeptically. “Since when do you care about me?” Ethan chuckled. “I don’t know. But ever since I met you, I just felt… I should be here.” Nadine let out a quiet sigh. “You don’t have to feel responsible for my life.” “I know.” Ethan’s voice was calm but firm. “But I still want to be here.” Nadine didn’t respond. She didn’t know how to. She had spent so long handling everything on her own. But Ethan, in his own quiet way, had started to become a part of her new world. And for the first time, she didn’t mind. NOT LOVE, BUT SOMETHING DEEPER One day, as Ethan walked Nadine home, they talked about the past. “You grew up in an orphanage?” Nadine asked suddenly. Ethan glanced at her. “Yeah. I lived there until I was seven, before I was adopted.” Nadine nodded thoughtfully. “I was in an orphanage too, but I don’t remember much. I don’t know if we ever met before.” Ethan gave a small smile. “No, we weren’t in the same place.” Nadine looked at him, puzzled. “Then why do you act like we have some kind of connection from the past?” Ethan exhaled, staring ahead. “I don’t know. I just feel… like I want to protect you.” Nadine held his gaze. Ethan continued in a softer voice, “At first, I thought I was attracted to you… like a man is attracted to a woman. But the more I got to know you, the more I realized—that’s not the kind of love I feel.” Nadine waited for him to go on. “My feelings for you are more like… a brother’s.” Ethan smiled slightly. “I just want to make sure you’re okay.” Nadine lowered her gaze, an unfamiliar warmth spreading through her chest. She had always been alone. Always fought her battles by herself. But Ethan… he didn’t push, didn’t demand—he just stayed. And for the first time, Nadine felt like she had family again. SIBLINGS WITHOUT BLOOD That night, as Ethan walked Nadine to her apartment, she stopped in front of her door and whispered, “I’m scared.” Ethan turned to her. “Scared of what?” “Scared that if we get too close, we’ll realize we’re nothing to each other.” Ethan let out a soft chuckle. He reached out and gently patted her head, the way an older brother would. “We don’t need blood to be family.” Nadine stood still, then smiled slightly. “Ethan…” she murmured. “Hm?” “If one day I disappear again… would you still look for me?” Ethan was silent for a moment, then met her eyes with unwavering certainty. “Yes.” His answer was simple, yet so profound. Nadine felt her eyes sting with unshed tears. She had never expected to find someone who genuinely wanted to protect her—not because of love, not because of obsession, but because of something even deeper than that. They weren’t related by blood. They had come from different pasts. But somehow, Ethan had become someone she saw as family. And in that moment, for the first time in her life, she felt like she truly had someone she could call her own. And Ethan, without realizing it, had become a part of her she could never let go.
