Daniel stared at Sophia in disbelief.
"He knows?"
Sophia nodded.
"Someone found you."
Daniel ran a hand through his hair and began pacing the room.
For three years, he had lived in hiding.
Three years of looking over his shoulder.
Three years of silence.
And now it was all falling apart.
"When did you find out?" he asked.
"This morning."
Daniel stopped pacing.
"Then we don't have much time."
Sophia's face tightened.
"No, we don't."
---
Meanwhile, Ava couldn't stop thinking about what Sophia had almost revealed at the café.
An accident.
That was the word that kept echoing in her mind.
What accident?
Why did everyone seem afraid to talk about it?
And why did it connect Ethan and Daniel?
That evening, she visited Ethan.
He looked exhausted.
As soon as she entered his apartment, she knew something was wrong.
"Ethan?"
He looked up.
"I found Daniel."
Ava froze.
"What?"
"A private investigator tracked him down."
Relief briefly crossed her face.
"That's wonderful."
"No."
The bitterness in his voice surprised her.
"He doesn't want to see me."
Ava frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Ethan handed her a sheet of paper.
The investigator's report.
Ava quickly read it.
When she finished, she looked up.
"This doesn't make sense."
"I know."
"Why would your brother hide from you?"
Ethan looked away.
"Because he blames me."
The room fell silent.
Ava slowly sat beside him.
"For what?"
Ethan's jaw tightened.
The question clearly hurt.
For several moments, he said nothing.
Then finally, he spoke.
"Three years ago, Daniel and I were driving home after an argument."
Ava listened carefully.
"It was raining heavily."
His voice grew quieter.
"We were angry with each other."
He paused.
Then continued.
"I lost control of the car."
Ava felt her stomach tighten.
"The vehicle crashed."
The image formed instantly in her mind.
Rain.
Darkness.
A violent collision.
"What happened after that?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
"When I woke up in the hospital, Daniel was gone."
Ava stared at him.
"Gone?"
"He disappeared before anyone could question him."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
The pain in Ethan's voice was impossible to miss.
"For three years I've been trying to understand."
Ava reached for his hand.
"Maybe he'll finally tell you."
Ethan wished he believed that.
---
Elsewhere, Daniel sat alone after Sophia left.
The memories were returning.
The crash.
The rain.
The shouting.
The secret.
A secret so dangerous that revealing it could destroy multiple lives.
He looked toward a locked drawer.
Inside it was something he had protected for three years.
Something that explained everything.
Something Ethan had never seen.
His phone suddenly rang.
Daniel answered immediately.
"Hello?"
A deep voice responded.
"You need to leave."
Daniel froze.
"How did you get this number?"
The caller ignored the question.
"They're getting closer."
Fear spread through Daniel's chest.
"They?"
The line went silent for a moment.
Then the voice returned.
"The people responsible for the accident."
Daniel's blood ran cold.
Because the accident had never been an accident.
---
The next day, Ava arrived at work determined to find answers.
As she entered the building, she noticed an envelope resting on her desk.
Again.
No sender.
No name.
Her hands trembled slightly as she opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Unlike the previous pictures, this one showed the crash site from three years earlier.
A damaged car.
Police vehicles.
Ambulances.
But that wasn't what caught her attention.
There was someone standing in the background.
Watching.
A man.
His face was partially visible.
Yet Ava recognized him immediately.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Because the man in the photograph was someone she knew.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who worked at Ethan's company.
And if he had been at the crash scene three years ago, then he knew far more than he had ever admitted.
A lot more.
The truth was getting closer.
And so was the danger.
