The deeper Zuri and Somadina moved into the Forbidden Forest, the colder the air became—so cold it felt like the forest was draining the warmth straight out of their bodies. A thick mist curled around their feet, and the tall, twisted trees leaned inward as if they were watching, listening, waiting.
No birds sang.
No insects hummed.
Only silence…and breathing darkness.
Zuri hugged her arms tightly around herself. “Somadina… this place feels alive.”
“It is,” he replied quietly, scanning the shadows with his spear. “This forest remembers every soul that has ever stepped inside it—and every soul that never returned.”
They continued deeper, stepping over fallen logs covered in strange glowing moss. Wisps of shadow moved behind trees, quick and silent—never fully showing themselves. Zuri’s bracelet pulsed softly, a warm heartbeat of light in the overwhelming darkness.
Then suddenly—
A low rumble vibrated through the earth beneath their feet.
Leaves shivered.
Branches rattled.
Mist twisted upward like smoke.
Somadina stepped in front of Zuri, spear raised. “Get behind me!”
But then—
A blinding golden light burst from the darkness ahead. It grew brighter and brighter until Zuri had to shield her eyes. Somadina crouched low, ready to fight.
When the light faded into shape…
A lion stood before them.
But not an ordinary lion.
This lion was made entirely of golden light.
Its mane flowed like liquid fire.
Its eyes burned like miniature suns.
Each pawstep left shimmering sparks on the forest floor.
Zuri’s mouth fell open. “What…what are you?”
The lion’s voice was powerful yet calm, echoing like thunder rolling across distant mountains:
“I am the Guardian of Light.
Protector of the Sun-Blessed.
Guide of the chosen.”
Zuri’s heart pounded. The lion’s golden eyes looked straight into her soul.
“The power within you,” it continued, “is ancient. It is older than Amazu. Older than the forest. It has existed since the first dawn. But power without courage is nothing.”
Zuri swallowed hard. “I…I’m afraid. Everywhere I step, the shadows follow me.”
The lion lowered its head until its glowing face was inches from hers.
The golden light reflected in her trembling eyes.
“Fear means you are human.”
Its voice deepened, warm like sunlight.
“Courage is not the absence of fear.
Courage is choosing to walk forward even while fear walks behind you.”
Zuri breathed in sharply. Those words wrapped around her heart like a warm cloak.
Somadina watched silently, his eyes wide. Even he—brave warrior of the mountains—felt humbled before this celestial creature.
The lion stepped back. “Sun-Blessed… awaken your courage.”
Zuri felt her bracelet heat up—warm, bright, powerful. Light pulsed through her arm, spreading through her chest like fire.
The lion lifted its head and roared—a mighty roar that shook the leaves from the trees and sent waves of golden light blasting outward. The mist vanished. The shadows scattered like frightened spirits. Even the forest itself seemed to bow under the force of that roar.
Then, slowly…
The lion’s body dissolved back into glowing particles, floating upward like tiny stars until they disappeared into the treetops.
Zuri stood frozen, breath trembling with awe.
Somadina stepped closer. “Zuri… your light is growing.”
She looked at her bracelet.
It shone brighter than ever—steady, fierce, alive.
For the first time since entering the Forbidden Forest, Zuri didn’t feel like a frightened girl.
She felt chosen.
She felt strong.
She felt ready.
“Somadina,” she whispered, lifting her glowing hand, “I’m not afraid to continue.”
He nodded proudly. “Then the forest better prepare itself. Because the Sun-Blessed is awake.”
Together, they stepped forward—deeper into the heart of the forest, where darker secrets and greater trials awaited them.
But Zuri’s courage burned brighter than the shadows.
And the Guardian’s words echoed inside her chest:
“Courage is walking forward while fear follows behind.”
