The forest was silent again, but not peacefully so.
It was the silence that comes after a storm—
The silence that waits for something worse.
Zuri and Somadina rested beneath a giant iroko tree, trying to catch their breath. The battle with the Shadow General had drained them both.
Somadina wrapped a cloth around a cut on his arm.
“That was only one general,” he said quietly. “There may be more.”
Zuri looked at her bracelet—still glowing faintly from the power she unleashed.
“I know. And the worst one is waiting for us.”
Her voice trembled, not with fear… but with certainty.
The air suddenly grew cold.
So cold their breath turned into white mist.
Somadina stood quickly, spear in hand.
“Zuri… something’s coming.”
The trees bent as a violent wind surged through the forest. Darkness rushed between the trunks like a living river. The ground cracked. The sky darkened—despite it being daytime.
Then…
A towering figure materialized in front of them.
Zuri’s heart tightened.
She had seen him in visions.
In dreams.
In the Trial of the Future.
But seeing him now was different.
He was real.

THE SHADOW KING APPEARS
The Shadow King stood taller than any human.
His armor was carved from obsidian and shadow.
His cape moved like smoke.
His crown was made of jagged dark crystals.
When he opened his eyes—
The entire forest dimmed.
Those eyes were red fire, ancient and merciless.
Somadina staggered backward.
“That’s… him.”
Zuri stepped forward instinctively—though her body trembled.
The Shadow King’s voice rumbled through the forest like thunder:
“Sun-Blessed…”
His words made the ground shake.
Even the trees bowed.
“…you have awakened.”
Zuri tried to speak, but her throat tightened.
The King’s presence pressed on her chest like a weight of stone.
Somadina gripped her arm. “Zuri, we have to fall back. He’s too strong—”
But the Shadow King raised one finger—
And Somadina was thrown backwards by a wave of dark energy, crashing into a tree.
“Somadina!” Zuri shouted.
She ran to him, but the King’s voice froze her in place.
“You cannot protect him.
You cannot protect anyone.”
Zuri clenched her fists.
“Yes, I can.”
The King stepped closer—his boots cracking the ground beneath him.
“Your light is growing… but you are still a child.”
He lifted his hand.
A ring of shadows circled Zuri and Somadina, spinning faster and faster until they formed a vortex of darkness.
Inside the vortex she saw visions:
🔥 Amazu Kingdom burning
🔥 Villagers running
🔥 Warriors falling
🔥 The palace collapsing
🔥 The moon turning red again
🔥 And herself—broken, defeated, powerless
Zuri screamed and held her head.
“Stop! STOP!”
The Shadow King’s voice became a whisper—cold as death:
“This is the future if you continue your foolish journey.”
The visions stopped.
Zuri dropped to her knees, trembling violently.
Somadina crawled beside her, pulling her into his arms.
“Zuri… don’t listen to him. He wants to break you.”
Her voice cracked.
“But what if he’s telling the truth?”
The Shadow King lowered his head, studying her like a predator studying prey.
“Give up your quest…”
He extended his hand toward her.
“…and I will spare your kingdom.”
Somadina stood and raised his spear.
“Don’t you dare touch her!”
The Shadow King didn’t even look at him.
Dark tendrils shot from the King’s hand, wrapping around Somadina’s throat and lifting him off the ground.
He choked, struggling helplessly.
“STOP!” Zuri screamed, her bracelet flaring with light.
The light forced the tendrils to loosen, and Somadina fell to the ground, gasping.
The King tilted his head.
“Interesting. Your bond makes you stronger…
I will remember that.”
He stepped back, shadows swirling around his feet.
“Your courage is amusing, Sun-Blessed.
But courage cannot stop destiny.”
He raised his hand once more.
“The next time we meet…
I will end you.”
The forest exploded with black smoke.
When the darkness cleared—
The Shadow King was gone.
And the forest was silent again.
---
AFTERMATH
Zuri’s legs gave out.
Somadina caught her.
She pressed her hands to her chest, struggling to breathe.
“He’s too strong… Somadina… he’s so strong…”
He held her tightly.
“Yes. But so are you. And you’re getting stronger every day.”
Zuri closed her eyes.
The Shadow King’s warning echoed in her mind.
“Courage cannot stop destiny.”
She wiped her tears and looked toward the heart of the forest.
“No…”
Her voice grew steady.
“Courage is how I change destiny.”
Somadina smiled weakly.
“That’s the Zuri I know.”
Their journey wasn’t over.
It had only become more dangerous.
But Zuri had made her promise—
To protect Amazu.
To face the Shadow King.
No matter the cost.
