THE DREAM BENEATH THE MOON
That night, Airi dreamed again.
This time, she was not alone.
Two boys stood beneath the moon in an ancient city. They looked
inseparable, laughing as though the world had never given them a
reason to fear it.
A woman stood nearby.
A fourth figure remained hidden in shadow.
Airi tried to move toward them.
The scene changed.
One of the boys was holding a small child's hand.
Then the sky darkened.
Airi woke with tears in her eyes, though she did not know why.
Across the city, Ren woke at exactly the same moment.
He had seen the same place.
The same moon.
The same four figures.
But his dream had shown one additional detail.
The fourth person had looked directly at him.
The next morning, Airi and Ren compared what they remembered.
“Everyone says there were three,” Ren said.
“Three?”
“The old story.”
“What story?”
“The story of the Hunter.”
Airi's stomach tightened.
Before Ren could continue, a shadow passed over the classroom
window.
The glass reflected four figures.
Only two stood in the room.
Ren whispered, “Airi…”
The fourth reflection smiled
