The next day, I woke early and prepared breakfast for Leo even though my mum insisted that she could do it, so I won’t be late to work. I just wanted to do something for him and after I was done, I kissed his forehead and left for work.
For some reason I was nervous. I didn’t want to admit it to myself but it was there and it was because of a certain someone. Dante.
I hadn’t spoken to him in over twenty four hours and I hadn’t returned his calls either. I was expecting his crash out and for some reason it made me nervous.
When I got to my office, I turned on my computer and checked if there was any email, I didn’t see any and I was disappointed. I tried concentrating but occasionally my mind moved to Dante. I felt bad about all the things I had said to him and I wished to take them back.
‘You’re already falling for his charms once again’
No, I shook my head, I couldn’t let that happen. I was thinking about a man who had hurt me and forgotten all about me while claiming to love me. If there was anything I should do, I was to make him miserable. If he wanted to win me back, then he had to work for it.
I picked my phone to check the internet and that’s when a notification popped up. It was gossip news but what caught my attention was Dante’s name and when I clicked on it. I saw Dante in a passionate embrace with a woman.
I quickly read the write up and apparently, the woman was a famous model and the news stated that they were seen late last night leaving a hotel. My fingers curled into fist.
“How dare he?” I muttered under my breath.
“He said he wanted to make our marriage work and now he couldn’t even come find me?” I scoffed. So much for wanting the relationship to work.
“Focus on your work Alessia” I said to myself. Thinking about Dante won’t pay my bills. I had designs to look at and a report to file.
I finally managed to concentrate and put all thoughts of Dante away. I was writing my report when the telecom rang. When I picked the call, it was Nikolai calling me.
“Come to my office, Alessia” his voice was rough and I sensed something was wrong.
“On my way”
I wondered what made Nikolai sound that way. I only hoped it was nothing serious. When I got to the front of his door, I knocked lightly.
“Come in”
I opened the door quietly and when Nikolai saw me, he smiled but that smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“Nikolai”
“Alessia. Have a seat” he gestured to the chair. I sat down
“Is there a problem Nikolai?” he sighed.
“Yes, Alessia. It’s about the company”
“What about the company? Are we going bankrupt?”
“No, we aren’t going bankrupt. At least not yet. But an important investor is threatening to pull out if we don’t meet his conditions”
“What are the conditions? What do we have to do?” I was breathing rapidly.
“His conditions is to have you sacked?” My eyes widened in shock.
“Me? Sacked? What did I do? And who is this investor threatening my position?”
Then it clicked…There was only one person who could do something like this. I stood up abruptly.
“Don’t tell me Dante is threatening you to have me sacked. And you are considering it?”
“Alessia wait. He’s our biggest investor and we can’t let him get angry. If he pulls out, we will be bankrupt”
“I can’t believe you, Nikolai. You are my friend and yet you’d want to sack me?”
“It’s not like that. I'm not sacking you. Just think of it as a break”
“I don’t want a break! You know this is wrong. In fact, I’m talking to the wrong person. I know where to direct my anger to”
I turned and walked away. I went straight to the front of the building and hailed a cab. As soon as the cab stopped, I entered it and gave the driver the direction. I was livid and I was going to give to Dante a piece of my mind.
As the cab came to a stop in front of the building, I alighted the vehicle. I walked straight into the building and made my way to Dante’s office. I didn’t wait to know if he was in a meeting or not. I walked to his floor and straight to his office and pushed it open.
There were two other men in there and they looked surprised by the interruption.
“I’ll speak with you later, gentlemen” he said dismissing them.
“What the hell, Dante? What do you think you are doing?”
“You finally show your face” hie leaned back into his chair. “To what do I owe this surprise?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know the reason I’m here”
“But I’m not acting. I really don’t know why you are here. Or was it that you missed me?” He asked with a smirk.
“I can’t believe you still act childish. You are trying to get me sacked. For what reason?”
“I don’t like how things are being run around there and since it’s my investment I had to do something”
“And the solution is sacking me? What did I even do?”
“Well, I don’t want you working there or anywhere”
“Why? Even now, you are still trying to control my life. What the f**k is your problem”
“I don’t have a problem. Your job keeps you away from your duties as a wife”
I couldn’t believe the nonsense Dante was spitting from his mouth.
“In case you have forgotten, we are not married. I divorced you. I have not been your wife for four years so where is all this talk coming from”
“You said few days back that you were willing to make our marriage work”
“I must have been drunk when I said that. I take that back! I don’t want to be married to you”
“Well, you don’t have a choice. You don’t have a job and no money. The only thing you have is me” the arrogance in his tone, made me more angry.
“I hate you Dante! I really hate you!”
“No, you don’t my Alessia. There’s only one way to get that job back”
“What is that?”
“Be my mistress”
