I ran a finger through my hair in frustration after Alessia left. I didn’t mean to say those things. It just came out in the spur of the moment. Everything was going fine between us. I wanted to talk to her about our marriage and now I had f****d everything up.
My phone rang and I checked the caller ID. It was my mum. I quickly picked.
“Son, how are you? You’ve forgotten about your mother and the only time I get to see you is in the news”
“I’m very busy mum”
“So busy that you can’t spare sometime for your mother?” I sighed.
I had been avoiding my mum because she had been trying to set me up with different girls. I wasn’t interested in any of them because the only person I want is my wife.
Fuck! I thought.
Alessia already had me wrapped around her fingers again when I should be planning my revenge on her.
“Are you still there son?” My mother’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
“I’m sorry. I was distracted for a bit”
“Back to what I was saying, can we meet up or do I have to fix an appointment like others?”
“Fine”
I could feel her smile from the other end of the line but I made no comment on it as I hung up. I thought about going after Alessia before meeting up with my mum but I didn’t want my mother’s nagging and so I reluctantly went into the bathroom to freshen up.
I was ready in thirty minutes time and I called my driver to bring the car to the front. I entered the car and he took me to my mother’s favorite restaurant. When I entered, I saw the shocked faces of the people but I ignored them. I wasn’t in the mood for paparazzi. The waiter led me to the private booth reserved and my mum was already seated taking a drink. The moment she saw me she dropped the drink and stood up.
“Oh my son, it feels like ages since I’ve seen you” she said in that motherly tone.
“Don’t be dramatic mum. You saw me last month” I said flatly.
“That’s too long for a mother to see her son or are you avoiding me?”
“You know that’s not the issue. Like I told you, I’m very busy. If you’ve seen the news then you know I have a big project at hand”
“Fine. Work! Work! Work! That’s the only thing you talk about. Don’t you have any fun in your life?”
“That’s what pay the bills. Isn’t it?”
“You’ve become lean. You don’t look well. Are you taking care of yourself? See, that’s why I told you, you need a wife”
I knew the conversation was going to move to this point and that’s why I had been avoiding her.
“Mum, I already told…”
“Yes, you are not interested in a wife. You’ve told me that more times than I can count. But you need a partner. You need children. I want grandchildren”
My mum had a point there. I needed children but the only woman I wanted to have children with had left me.
“I know. My wife and I would see to that” I said and her expression changed.
“What wife? Do you have a wife that I don’t know about?”
“What are you saying mum? I’m talking about Alessia”
“Alessia who? That girl is not your wife. She ran away from you what are you even thinking of. I told you a number of times, that she wasn’t good enough for you and she proved me right”
“Yes, she ran away but it doesn’t change the fact that she’s still my wife”
“Over my dead body. She signed the divorce papers and left it for you. Don’t tell me you’re still pining for that gold digger and that’s the reason you don’t want to marry?”
“That’s enough mum. I won’t sit here and let you talk about my wife in that manner. I’m an adult and if I’m pining over her, that’s my business and not yours”
“Is this all you have to say to your mother who carried you for nine months. Why don’t you ever listen to me” she started weeping.
“I won’t allow you to control my life. I already told you I’m not interested in the girls you keep trying to hook me up with. That reminds me, I don’t want you trying to shackle me with anyone. If I wanted another marriage, I would have done so since” I said with anger.
Over the years, she has been trying to set me up with her friend’s daughters and I had warned her. I didn’t need that now Alessia was in the city. If I’m going to get my revenge on her, I had to give her the impression that I still wanted only her.
“I just want what’s best for you”
“Well, you’ve done enough. I’ll handle things by myself. I’m leaving” I stood up, fixing my suit
“You didn’t even order anything. We have not spent enough time together”
“It’s your fault, isn’t it. The time we would have used talking about other things, you were trying to use that time to get me married. Tell them to put the bill on my card” I turned and left.
My mother and I were in a love-hate relationship. She annoyed me most of the time with her constant nagging but I loved her regardless. But right now, I had other pressing issues at hand.
Alessia being at the top of the least.
“Where to?” My driver asked the moment I entered the car.
“To the office”
I brought out my phone to call Alessia. The phone rang but she didn’t pick up. I called again and still no answer.
“Damn!” I muttered.
She must be really pissed at me but I wasn’t going to give up. Not yet.
“Stephen, get me Alessia’s location”
