ALESSIA
How dare he accuse me of being selfish? I thought angrily as I drove home.
“You shouldn’t be thinking about him right now” I muttered to myself.
I had a more pressing issues at hand. My mother was in the city and she was already at my house. I needed to see her. I stepped on the brakes and soon I was at my home. I parked my car and entered into the house.
“Mum!” I shouted the moment I entered. Then my little boy ran to me and I opened my arms as he jumped into the hug. I held him tightly, breathing him in. It had been a while I held him in my arms.
“I missed you mama” he whispered.
“I missed you more, sweetheart”
I had plans on traveling when I had settled in with work. My mum cleared her throat and I looked up at her.
“Mum. How are you? I missed you” I said giving her a hug while putting Leo to his feet so he could play.
“You said you were going to visit, Les” my mum said with an accusing tone.
“I’m sorry, I had a lot of work and I couldn’t just ask for a leave when I had just arrived”
“You didn’t even call. Leo was missing you so much and that’s why I had to bring him here” I pinched Leo’s cheek painfully. I was happy they were here but at the same time I was scared.
“Mummy, you know both of you can’t stay here” she raised a brow.
“Dante is here and we’ve met”
“Does he know about Leo?” I shook my head.
“You need to tell him. I’ve supported you all these with Leo and I’ve watched him when you’re busy. I’m telling you that he needs his father. He’s no longer a child and when he sees other children with their fathers, he’ll want to know about his” I sighed.
“I know but I can’t Dante now. There are so many things going on right now. Have you both eaten anything?”
“Yes. I made something when we got here. You don’t have food in your fridge. You haven’t been eating healthily”
“I’ve not been home for some days but now that you’re here, I’ll restock. How long do you plan to stay here?”
“Maybe a week. Leo would love to spend some time with you”
“A week is fine”
“Don’t you think we should move here back?”
I froze.
“Move here? Why? You know I’m just here for work and after this is done, I’ll be leaving”
“I know. What I mean is haven’t you thought about staying here permanently?” I shook my head
“You know my feelings about this city, mum. I don’t…”
The loud vibration of my phone interrupted me and when I checked who was calling and saw it’s Dante, I muted it.
“It’s him, right?” I nodded.
“Are you just coming back from seeing him?” I hesitated before answering that question but judging from her expression, she already knew the truth.
“Alessia…”
When she called my name in full, she was about to scold me.
“It was a harmless meeting mum”
“I feel like you’re not telling me the truth. I don’t want you to get hurt again” I sighed.
My mum had been with me through and thin. She was my shield when I had left five years ago and helped me through Leo’s difficult birth.
“I won’t mum. Dante asked me to come back and I kind of….agreed” I finally let the cat out of the bag.
“You agreed? Have you forgotten why you left in the first place?”
“I haven’t but he looked desperate. He said he didn’t sign the divorce papers and legally I was still his wife. I told him my lawyers would reach out to him. I just…feel like I’m doing something wrong” I threw my hands in the hair.
“Les, you have to take things slowly so you don’t get hurt again”
“I know. Thinking about it now, accepting his proposal doesn’t feel right. He hasn’t changed one bit. He was suddenly sweet and I thought he had become better but I was wrong”
The last few hours was well until Dante had to ruin it with his words. I guessed I was caught up in the moment that was why I accepted his proposal quickly. How could I have forgotten how my marriage ended so quick. I felt stupid.
“You are still in love with him and I can’t blame you for that” my mother’s arms came around me and I felt like a baby that was being consoled.
“It’ll be fine. Just concentrate and finish the work you came for so we can move on with our lives. We were better off staying out of the country”
“Yes, I can’t wait to finish my commission so we can go back to being the way we used to be. You, Leo and I”
My phone rang again at that moment, my mum and I looked at the caller ID at the same time. It was Dante calling. I took my phone and blocked his number once and for all. I knew that wouldn’t stop Dante from trying to reach me but at least I wouldn’t think about him for a while.
“Go and spend some time with Leo while I make something for you to eat”
“Thank you mum” I smiled at her and she smiled back.
“Leoo…” I called and he came running to me with his toy.
“What do you have with you? Can mummy join you and play” a wide smile spread across his lips.
“Yesss” he jumped up excitedly, like he had just won a lottery.
“Let’s go to the room”
We went hand in hand to his room and I helped him build a castle. I hadn’t realized how much I had missed my son until now and I wondered how I coped without him since I came here. I made a silent promise not to leave him for too long again.
The thought of my son excited made me happy and somewhere at the back of my mind, I thought about his father too.
