Banditry

1805 Words
Robert Wealthy led Jason and the others to the outside of the wealthy family's courtyard. Jason looked at the high walls and large courtyard in the moonlight, quite satisfied. With a machine g*n and a food supply, their plan could easily be executed in this courtyard. Despite being a soldier now, Jason had engaged in many such activities in the past. His experience was not something Robert Wealthy could compare to. Being a bandit and being a soldier are two different things. No matter what kind of bandit one is, the most important thing is not the number of people or guns they have, but the psychological advantage. Once you know your opponent is a bandit, it diminishes their stature in your mind. Bandits aim for money and food; killing and arson are just means to an end, not hobbies. Bandits are also human beings who, like anyone else, do not wish to see bloodshed. They prefer to keep things simple rather than complicate matters and sow fear among people. After circling the courtyard, Jason noticed a inconspicuous back door. If the goal was wealth, they should have set a trap outside that back door, waiting to catch fish. However, with only three people and a child at hand, and with Jason having no interest in wealth, he decided to let that back door serve as an escape route for them. It's better to let them run away peacefully. Returning to the front gate, Robert Wealthy, fearing an ambush, quickly reminded Jason to avoid the gap in the gate. Jason, unconcerned, believed that if they were dealing with bandits, they needed to show some bandit spirit. Standing boldly in front of the gate, he raised his voice and shouted into the courtyard, "Listen, people inside the courtyard! We are legitimate traders. Passing by your mansion today is fate, and it's only right to disturb you for a business transaction. Open the gate within a moment and let us make a peaceful and profitable deal!" These words were shouted with vigor and reverberated throughout the vicinity of Song Family Village, resonating in the quiet night. Emily and Martin couldn't understand what Jason was up to, but Robert Wealthy knew. Jason was sending a signal, showing his strength and asserting his authority. Despite the seemingly pleasant words, in the dead of night, the more pleasant the words sounded, the more unsettling they became. Puzzled, Robert Wealthy, astonished, said, "I say, brother, you guys in the resistance are really something! I'm impressed. So, the resistance also does this! Experts!" After saying this, he even raised his thumb in approval, only to receive a fierce glare from Martin. Jason's signaling is a psychological tactic, casting a spell of tension over them, making them nervous and potentially triggering thoughts of escape, while also creating time for the next steps to be taken. It's been years since they've done something like this, and now, after shouting at the top of his lungs, there's a sense of liberation and vigor, feeling refreshed and invigorated. Immediately, he called upon Martin and Robert Wealthy, instructing them to gather hay from a nearby haystack and block the gate directly, piling it up high. Initially, they thought that they had already scared off one bandit, but to their surprise, not long after, they heard another signal outside the gate. Every word and sentence could probably be heard clearly throughout Songjia Village, causing Samuel Fields inside the house to tremble with fear, and the whole family to feel anxious. This was a serious situation; it seemed they were about to face bandits for real. Hastily, they sent a servant to observe the situation at the back door, and led his wife and children to immediately start packing their valuables. Simon Bright had been in the yard all along, and although his shot didn't hit the target, it was enough to scare them off, giving him a small sense of satisfaction. Now, with the signal sounding outside, his heart raced again. He hurried to the gate and, peering through the c***k, saw a person standing confidently at the gate, observing the surroundings with a steady stance. Simon Bright had seen a lot in his life and faced life and death situations, but this time, he didn't dare to take another shot through the c***k in the gate. The previous individual may have had a machine g*n, but it was clear they were bluffing, so Simon Bright didn't hesitate. Now, facing this person with bare hands and no visible weapons, though the facial details were unclear, Song Ming behind the gate felt a chill and sensed a sinister aura. Simon Bright concluded that this was a real bandit encounter. If he fired a shot now, and the bandits stormed in later, he would end up in pieces. Samuel Fields was the host, not his own father; what was he trying to achieve by risking it all? Samuel Fields, upon seeing Simon Bright return from the front yard, quickly asked him, "What's the situation?" "It's really bandits coming, not sure how many," Simon Bright replied. Upon hearing this, Samuel Fields sat down heavily on the kang bed, exclaiming, "What are we going to do? What are we going to do? Is it because we didn't pay respects to the Bodhisattva today?" At that moment, the servant who had gone to the back door returned, saying, "Master, it seems like there's no one at the back door. "While Samuel Fields was still hesitating, suddenly a laborer in the yard shouted, "Fire, fire!" Frantically, Simon Bright and Samuel rushed to the door to look out into the front yard, where a large fire was blazing outside the gate, casting a fiery glow over the entire yard. Samuel Fields made up his mind and urged his family to quickly pack up and prepare to leave through the back door. Seeing Simon Bright following behind, and considering the household belongings, he immediately instructed Simon Bright, "Simon Bright, you lead the laborers to do your best to guard the yard for me. If you can keep it safe, I will reward you with twenty. . . no, forty dollars. " Simon Bright had thought he might be able to leave through the back door too, but now Samuel Fields was still concerned about protecting the property. Feeling conflicted, he was about to find an excuse, but suddenly Samuel Fields grabbed his hand and placed fifteen dollars firmly in it. "I'll give you fifteen dollars now. If you can protect the yard, I'll give you another twenty-five when I return. " Money talks, and Simon Bright swallowed the excuse he was about to give and pocketed the money before returning to the front yard. As the fire raged, the burning gates began to crackle and pop. Martin threw the last bundle of hay into the fire, feeling the heat scorching his skin. He patted the dust off his chest, ran to Jason, and said seriously, "Brother, I have to make it clear, if the group finds out about this in the future, you must not doubt me!" Jason looked at Martin's soot-covered face and laughed sincerely, punching Martin's shoulder, "I did this alone, got it?" Simon Bright, watching the flames outside, shouted to the laborers in the yard who were at a loss, "What are you afraid of! Bandits can't get in! Hurry and put out the fire!" He grabbed a bucket, scooped water from a large water tank in the yard, and rushed to splash water on the gates. The laborers, finally coming to their senses, joined Simon Bright in a frantic effort to pour water into the gates. The sound of water splashing in the yard could be heard outside the gates. Fire outside, water inside—the water flowed out from under the gate, wetting the hay at the bottom, sizzling and steaming, creating a spectacular scene with billowing black smoke mixing with misty water vapor. The fire weakened, the outer layer of the gate was charred, but the inner layer held, serving as a barrier. Robert Wealthy, seeing this, felt a bit anxious. Looking at Jason, who was watching but not taking action, he hurried over and asked, "Boss, look, the fire isn't spreading, the gate hasn't burned through yet, we need to think of a solution, don't we?" The title "Boss" that Robert Wealthy blurted out was influenced by Jason, who had sounded the alarm first and then swiftly set the fire. This style was reminiscent of the leader of the Black Wind Mountain, and Robert Wealthy naturally fell into character. Jason remained unfazed, saying, "Let them pour water. If the fire doesn't go out, we can't get in either. Just wait. "Robert Wealthy pursed his lips, unable to figure out what this fox was up to. "Fine, let's just wait then," he thought. After the dedicated efforts of Simon Bright and the others, the fire was finally extinguished, the gates still standing. Exhausted and covered in soot, they threw down their buckets and sat in the yard, resting wearily. Watching the last spark extinguish and turn into a wisp of smoke, Jason walked over to Emily and reached out his hand, saying, "Give me the grenade. " Emily blinked her eyes and without hesitation, she pulled out the grenade and handed it to Jason. In her eyes, unlike the other soldiers in the timely and independent regiment, he was more than just a comrade; he was like a mentor to her, so Emily had no reason to hesitate. One thing leads to another, and the momentum diminishes. First the alarm, then the fire, and finally the finishing touch. This was the simplest trick, nothing to boast about. Jason placed the grenade against the gap between the two gates, standing it upright on the ground, and with a swift motion, he pulled the pin. Curiosity killed the cat. The fire had already been extinguished, but it seemed like someone was approaching the gates outside. With uncertainty in his heart, Simon Bright quickly got up, ran to the gate, and crouched down, trying to figure out what was happening outside. The air was filled with the smell of smoke and fire, but underneath it, there was a hint of gunpowder. Before Simon Bright could make sense of the situation, there was a sudden deafening explosion. The gates, already weakened by the fire, instantly shattered into pieces, with debris flying and a strong flash engulfing the area of several square meters. In the bright moonlight and the lanterns in the yard, Simon Bright's body lay clearly in front of the gate, embedded with large and small wood splinters and broken door panels. This sight finally drove the remaining people in the yard into a frenzy as they madly rushed towards the back door.
