Dawn

For security reasons, the intelligence operations of the Independent Brigade are not directly associated with other external organizations. When necessary, representatives from the Independent Brigade will proactively make contact or establish communication through designated information exchange locations, such as a certain mountain, temple, or under a specific stone where a note is concealed. Regularly, discreet individuals will clandestinely retrieve this information and relay it back in a covert manner to avoid the enemy tracking the movements of the Independent Brigade. Now, a communication letter has been forwarded to the independent group. The gist of the message is that between the resistance army and the vampire-controlled territories, several villages have established a new underground organization. They hope to establish contact with the independent group to share information and request that a representative from the independent group attend the founding meeting of this new organization. The letter also provides details on how and when to find them. The current independent group has just stabilized, and the work of expanding control in the surrounding areas has just begun. The border areas with the vampire-controlled territories are particularly blank. Therefore, Chief of Staff David Ding is very interested in this message. If they can indeed receive support from an intelligence organization in the border areas, it would greatly benefit the independent group. Isabella has been involved in underground intelligence work for a long time and can be considered an expert in this field for the independent group. Therefore, Chief of Staff David Ding did not make a hasty decision but instead sought Isabella's opinion first. Isabella carefully read the letter several times and had a different perspective from the Chief of Staff. The message in the letter did not pique Isabella's interest much. In Isabella's view, the essence of intelligence work lies in two words: "precision" and "caution." Even if the contents of the letter are reliable, the fact that this organization is newly established and has many shortcomings means that their first step should be to do "nothing," to test the members and check for any oversights, patiently waiting for the core of the organization to form, rather than rushing to hold a founding meeting. However, considering the Chief of Staff's keen interest and the fact that the organization is located in the border area, not in the perilous vampire-controlled territories, Isabella did not oppose it. She expressed that she could represent the independent group and go take a look. The meeting location is Green Hill Village, fifty miles east of Great North Manor, and it is not entering enemy territory. Isabella suggested bringing a communications officer along the way. After some consideration, the Chief of Staff thought that the level of danger was not high, but since Isabella is a female comrade, it would be better to have a few more people accompany her. The first company responsible for perimeter security was not at the manor, the third company was busy with construction projects, and most of the dozen or so members of the second company were still recovering from injuries. The guard unit... The independent group had a small number of personnel, and during the reorganization, even the guard unit was disbanded, leaving only a few guards. Therefore, this sightseeing mission could only be entrusted to the idle Ninth Platoon. Knowing that the Ninth Platoon would be going on a mission the next day, the cooks prepared rations for them the night before. Jason instructed them to prepare three days' worth of rations per person, which puzzled the cooks a bit. With the journey being just over fifty miles, they would likely return within a day, so why bring so much food? Despite their confusion, the cooks didn't hesitate and prepared the rations as instructed. This was a habit Jason had developed on the battlefield—unexpected situations could arise at any moment, and the discomfort of going hungry was not something to be taken lightly. Therefore, whenever there was an opportunity, the seasoned soldiers were willing to gather extra food, just in case. Escaping from the unnamed village back then was a result of being caught off guard and going hungry. Jason blamed himself for this afterwards and vowed not to be negligent in the future. Before dawn, the entire Ninth Platoon got up. Robert Wealthy, intending to sleep a bit longer in his warm bed, was excitedly splashed in the face with ice-cold water by Emily, who was thrilled about the mission opportunity. Robert had no choice but to grumble and reluctantly get up, skipping even the act of washing his face. After enduring Jason's brutal beating that day, Sandy Sniffles also left the Second Platoon and moved into the Ninth Platoon's quarters. Ever since the Ninth Platoon's sacrifice, he had been lonely, like a lost soul. Although he had always been reluctant to join the chaotic small group of the Ninth Platoon, Jason's fierce actions gave him a sense of coming home. Now, Sandy Sniffles, although quieter than before, no longer felt lonely. He no longer had to bask in the sun alone, which made him feel fulfilled. Originally, he merely disliked Jason, but now he added a layer of fear to that feeling. He didn't dare to report him, partly out of fear, but also because he could tell that Jason genuinely didn't care about his rank as a platoon leader. Perhaps, this devil didn't even care about wearing this military uniform. Jason carried a Type 38 rifle on his back, with a full 60-round ammo box at his waist and a 30-round ammo box on his side. In addition to the 5 rounds in the chamber, he had a total of 95 rounds of Type 65 bullets. He also had eight Type 97 hand grenades in his shoulder bag. Robert Wealthy carried a machine g*n, with 200 rounds of Type 92 bullets in his shoulder bag, not counting the ones in the magazine. Besides his own rations, he also carried Emily and Isabella's rations on him. After getting himself ready, Jason rummaged through the house and found a tattered oil-paper umbrella. He tied it up with a rope and also hung it on Robert Wealthy's back. "Jason, what, what are you doing? Why do you want to bring this thing? It's not going to rain at this time of year, is it? And even if it does rain, do you expect us to get soaked?" Robert Wealthy stared with wide eyes, complaining incomprehensibly. "Stop babbling nonsense. It's best if it doesn't rain, but if it does, your second task is to help Isabella hold the umbrella." Jason's words left Robert Wealthy speechless. "Grandma's, I've really become a pack mule. Not only do I have to carry things, but now I have to serve people too? How is this any different from working for the landlord's family?" He certainly didn't understand Jason's intentions; he just thought Jason was trying to flatter Isabella. On the side, Emily understood clearly. She blinked her eyes and said sarcastically, "What about me? What should I do?" Jason glanced at this deliberately teasing little girl and said, "If you're a warrior, then stand with me in the rain. If you're just a little kid, then the umbrella is yours." "I..." The little girl was trapped by Jason's shameless multiple-choice question. "Then I'll just get wet." Jason then waved his hand and said, "Alright, that's enough. Let's get ready to go." Inadvertently, he noticed Sandy Sniffles staring enviously at the fully armed Martin. Not having paid attention before, Jason thought that Sandy probably still had a rifle without bullets these days. He then turned to Emily and said, "Girl, bring out four wooden-handle grenades and two rows of Type 92 bullets." Upon hearing this, Emily ran into the inner room and after a while, she came out and handed the items to Jason, saying, "Didn't you say we didn't need to bring more?" Without saying a word, Jason handed the four grenades and ten bullets to Sandy Sniffles, then he was the first to walk out of the door. Jason only gave Sandy Sniffles ten bullets because he wanted to save more of the Type 792 bullets for the machine g*n's use. As Emily passed by Sandy Sniffles, she clenched her small fist, raised her little nose, and added, "Just pretend you don't know anything, then you can be like Martin in the future. Otherwise, hmph..." When Isabella walked out of the health team dormitory, five figures from Class Nine, with a significant height difference, were already waiting outside, fully armed and standing proudly in the misty dawn. She had initially thought about greeting the little girl, but the narrow and deep gaze in those eyes made her change her mind. Silently, she set off directly, facing the dawn, walking towards the sunrise.
