SEVEN The following day, the word ‘epidemic’ began to echo through the hospital. At first it did so silently, in the anxious minds of the doctors. But soon they began to whisper it to one another, and it was not long before the whole hospital was buzzing with the word, from the nurses and cleaners to the visitors and the unemployed lounging in the neglected garden. Epidemic … epidemic … epidemic. The previous evening, Anami Okiyano had arrived on a donkey loaned from a local charity worker.
