With some difficulty, Janice pushed the door open, and sure enough, on the bed lay a large heap, completely covered by the duvet. She looked round the room; it was a mess, as expected. Moving boxes were placed behind the door, which must have been the cause of the difficulty in opening it. Clothes we're scattered around the room, as well as some snacks wrappers. At one end of the room lay an alarm clock, likely broken.
Seriously Hannah? Janice mentally grumbled.
"Wake up Hannah! Today is the big day!" She said cheerfully.
"She isn't here." Mumbled a voice under the duvet.
"Too bad, 'cause I made her favorite breakfast, waffles with a cup of hot cocoa and marshmallow. Yum."
"She still isn't here."
Janice yanked the duvet away, to reveal a girl, whose eyes lazily fluttered open. Her hair looked like a birds nest on the pillow, and Janice noticed the bags under her eyes.
"You know, you don't have to hurl the alarm clock halfway across the room. You could just switch it off." Janice said.
Hannah rubbed the heels of her wrist on her eyes and yawned. "I tried. It's a stubborn clock. It wouldn't shut up."
Janice suspected that Hannah's version of switch it off was yelling “Shut up!” at the clock. She decided to keep her suspicion to herself though.
"Get up already, you don't want to be late on your first day." She said.
This made Hannah to groan, while twitching on the bed.
"Can I not go?" She asked.
"Hell no!" Janice exclaimed. "Cmon. You've been sleeping since 5pm yesterday."
Hannah slowly sat up on the bed.
"Not really." She said. "I've been up, wondering why the hell we had to move."
Janice sighed. "You know why. Your reputation was getting a little too bad back home. It was necessary we moved to somewhere you weren't so “famous”, so that you can have a chance to start over, maybe even live a regular life. Plus I got a new job, one I actually like."
"Our former house is just one hour drive away. I really don't see the difference." Hannah pointed out.
Janice rubbed her temples. Hannah really was tiring. She then kneeled to look into Hannah's eyes, who was still seated on the bed.
"I know you're nervous. It's okay to be nervous. But you promised you would at least try." She said.
Hannah rolled her eyes. "I'm not nervous." She corrected. "I'm terrified."
"That's okay too!" Janice said earnestly. "You know I will support you every step of the way. I just need you to promise me you would try to stay out of trouble this time. Please. Promise me Hannah."
Hannah looked deep into her step sister's eyes.
How could someone be so pretty? She wondered.
Unlike Hannah, who was white, Janice was black. She had gotten her dark skin, and the majority of her looks from her father, a man Hannah didn't have the chance to meet before he passed away, and their mother married Hannah's father. The only trait Janice inherited from their mother was her green eyes, which was identical to Hannah's.
The difference in their skin colors made it hard for people to believe they were related, but the two sisters couldn't be closer.
Their bond had strengthened when their mother had died, and Hannah's father, Janice's step dad had been locked up in prison. Hannah was only 12 then, and Janice was in her sophomore year at college. Janice's relatives offered to take her in, but refused to let Hannah tag along. Not having any known relatives, Hannah would have been inducted in the foster care facility. Janice rebelled against her relatives (likely the only rebellious act in her life), and dropped out of school to get a job and take care of Hannah.
That same Janice was staring into Hannah's eyes, begging her to, for once, not be a nuisance. And she was succeeding.
Hannah pouted her lips, and batted her eyelashes.
"Did you really make waffles and chocolate?"
Janice smiled, knowing that was the best “I promise” she was getting out of Hannah.
"There's only one way to find out, isn't there?"
