MACOY ❥
I jerk from side to side; beads of sweat trickle down my face.
“Please just let us be!”
My mother's plea. They send their boots into her abdomen, one. Two! I can feel each blow.
“Don't breathe too loud, no matter what."
Mom's instructions begin to fade as I watch her grunt in pain. Squatting before her, they pull her in. Mother struggles to loosen his tight grip on her hair.
“Your greatest mistake was becoming part of Valente's household." I can hear the mockery.
He pushes her to the ground as she coughs. Splatters of blood, she's dying. The desire to yell at them, but I lack the ability to. A mute at 9? I can feel failure creep up, gripping me tight while I hear everyone's mocking laughter.
The man pulls out a gun, pointing to her. I run out of hiding, launching towards him until I trip and fall.
"I was actually waiting for you to step out yourself,” he mocks as he lets out a coarse cackle.
“Please let him be, please! We… we will go very far and never come back,” mother pleads, wincing from pain.
“Who would watch who die first?” He asks, pointing the gun from me to Mother.
“Look at that; he's struggling. The mutty is struggling,” he laughs. The sound of shots, my mother's scream as it rains on her.
My body shakes with rage.I scream; I can feel pressure all over like I would explode.
My eyes were red-rimmed.“You can scream?" He sends a kick into my abdomen, and everything blacks out.
“Macoy,” a faint voice calls as it shakes me aggressively.
“Master Macoy!” I jerk up.
“Mother!” Zara wraps her arm around me.
"Leave now!” I order calmly. Zara gets up and picks up her bag; she stares at me for a few seconds and walks out.
“Quick, get him a glass of warm water,” Simeon orders Bellie.
“Young master!” She keeps muttering as she runs out. My eyes are red, covered with tears; Simeon hesitantly pulls me in for a hug. Then he gets up and exits. Bellie steps in, placing the warm water down; she heads out.
I fall back on the bed. I feel taunted. It is an endless reminder, but I don't want it to stop. The door pushes open.
“Your brother is here,” Simeon announces.
“What?” I can feel my heart picking pace, fingers clutched tightly.
Bellie stands behind Simeon, and I can hear her. Don't kill each other. She is panicking.
“You may leave."Simeon heads out, Bellie looks at me one more time, and leaves. This is becoming more fun than I thought. I chuckle, reaching for my gun.
I know what Zach wants, but I am ready to give him more. It is a dream.
Throwing my shirt on top of my body, carefully folding up my sleeves. My eyes catch the mark on my arm, the slit Zach gives me. My eyes glow with resentment.
“After so many years, you have found your way to me,” I interrupt Zach, who has been admiring the structures in my home. "Interesting." I gently descend the staircase, every move calculated, ready to pull the trigger.
“You have always had a unique taste; I'm not surprised."
“A compliment? I have not invited you for reconciliation. "What do you want?” My stern voice makes him pause. He stares at me and scoffs.
“You have found favor in father's sight." I watch him circle the carved image in the living room, his hand crossed behind him. The brown suit matches his gigantic build.
He comes to a halt, his feet apart as he stands.“Go to Father and tell him you do not want his company. I'm not sure if this is a request." He always sounded intimidating.
I chuckle and then break into laughter.
“You traveled all the way to beg for a position; do it right!” I have zero tolerance for him and his arrogance.
“Arghhhhh!” he growls, rushing towards me. Simeon pulls out a gun, and he halts.
“Fully loaded, c****d, and ready to perform. I will pull this trigger if you take another step forward.” I pull mine out.
“You now wield a gun at your brother; Father should see this." He turns and begins to walk away.
“You are no brother of mine! You are dead to me the day you slit my wrist while I slept.”
He halts, turning at full speed. His eyes wide open, his lips apart with no words coming forth.
“I'll let you leave in one piece, but I won't promise you the same the next time you show up uninvited." Zach throws his suit to the back and storms out the house.
I shut the door of my room, sliding to the floor. I hate the feeling, years have gone by and I want to run into his arms, the comfort he gave me when we were little. It was just him, Audrey, and Mom. They made living worth it. But now, I resent him more than anyone else. How he believes I am responsible for our mother's death.
I sigh.
