Chapter TenCARL WAS AT THE WINDOW in Harrington’s room. “Jas told me not to open the shutter,” said Makey. He was sitting on her bed. None of the windows in Dawntown had glass, and Carl had wondered if it was because it was ‛unnatural’. They had wooden shutters made of rows of slats that were angled up to capture sunlight, which meant it was impossible to see out of a window without opening the shutter. Carl had opened it the minute he’d heard Harrington’s and the army officer’s voices below as they returned from their day out. His stomach twisted painfully as he saw the two of them kiss.
