Chapter 2: A Contract Written in Lies

The word yes still echoed in Lena’s mind long after it left her lips. She didn’t know which scared her more—Adrian’s proposal… or how quickly she had accepted it. Adrian studied her carefully, as if waiting for her to take it back. When she didn’t, he turned and walked back to his desk with calm, measured steps. “Good,” he said simply. Good? That was all? Lena clenched her hands. “That’s it? You’re not even going to question me?” Adrian picked up a sleek black folder and placed it on the desk. “I don’t deal in uncertainty,” he replied. “You made your choice.” Something about the way he said it made it feel less like a choice… and more like a trap. “Come here.” Lena hesitated—but only for a second. She stepped forward. Inside the folder was a contract. Thick. Detailed. Terrifying. Her name was already printed on it. Her stomach dropped. “You prepared this… before I even agreed?” “I told you,” Adrian said, his voice calm but sharp, “I know everything.” Lena flipped through the pages, her eyes scanning the endless terms. “This is insane…” “No,” he corrected. “It’s necessary.” Her breath caught as she read: A two-year marriage agreement Strict confidentiality Public appearances as husband and wife No disclosure of the contract under any circumstances And then— Her fingers froze. “What is this?” she whispered. Adrian didn’t answer immediately. “Clause 17,” she read out loud, her voice trembling slightly. “The wife is not permitted to fall in love with the husband.” Silence. Lena looked up sharply. “Are you serious?” “Yes.” The coldness in his tone hit harder than the words. “That’s not something you can control,” she snapped. “It is,” Adrian replied. “If you understand your position.” “My position?” He stepped closer again, his presence overwhelming. “This is an arrangement,” he said. “Not a romance. Not a fantasy.” Lena let out a bitter laugh. “Trust me, there’s nothing romantic about this.” For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes. But it was gone before she could understand it. “Sign it.” Just like that. No hesitation. No emotion. Lena stared at the pen he placed in front of her. This was it. Once she signed, there was no turning back. “Before I do this,” she said slowly, “I want the truth.” Adrian’s gaze sharpened. “About what?” “Why me?” The question hung heavily in the air. For the first time since she walked in, Adrian didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he turned away, looking out at the city below. “You wouldn’t understand,” he said quietly. “Try me.” His jaw tightened. Then— “Because your family owes me.” Her heart skipped. “My family?” “Yes.” “That doesn’t make any sense. I barely—” “You don’t know everything about your past, Lena.” The way he said her name sent a chill through her. “What are you talking about?” Adrian turned back to her, his expression unreadable. “Sign the contract,” he said. “And you’ll find out soon enough.” Her chest tightened. This wasn’t just about money. This wasn’t just about survival. This was something deeper. Something darker. And she was already in too far. Slowly… hesitantly… Lena picked up the pen. Her hand trembled. “Once I sign this,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, “you keep your word. My mother’s treatment… everything?” “Yes.” No hesitation. No doubt. Just certainty. That scared her more than anything. Lena closed her eyes for a brief moment. This is for her, she told herself. Then— She signed. The sound of the pen against paper felt louder than it should have. Final. Permanent. Done. When she looked up, Adrian was already watching her. “Congratulations, Mrs. Blackwood.” The name felt foreign. Heavy. Wrong. “I need to go,” Lena said quickly, standing up. But before she could take a step— Adrian grabbed her wrist. The touch was firm. Unyielding. Electric. “You’re not going anywhere.” Her heart pounded. “What do you mean?” “You live with me now.” “What?!” “Effective immediately.” “This wasn’t in the—” “It’s implied.” “That’s not how contracts work!” “It is,” he said calmly, “when I say it does.” Lena pulled her hand back, frustration rising. “You can’t just control every part of my life!” Adrian stepped closer again, his voice dropping. “I already do.” Silence. Tension. Something dangerous lingered between them. “You wanted help,” he continued softly. “This is the price.” Lena stared at him, anger and fear mixing inside her. “Fine,” she said through clenched teeth. “But don’t expect me to play the perfect wife.” A faint smirk touched his lips. “Oh, I do.” Before she could react— He reached out and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. The gesture was gentle. Too gentle. It confused her. “Because from now on,” Adrian said quietly, his voice dangerously close, “everyone is watching.” Her breath hitched. “This isn’t just a marriage, Lena.” His eyes darkened. “It’s a performance.”
