“Lily? Mommy loves you so much, daddy does too. We have to go search an attack on the border with Alpha Leo, so you are going to sleep at the packhouse tonight! Doesn’t that sound exciting? One of the Elite women, her name is Elizabeth, has a daughter your age and you’re going to stay with them for the night.”
I whined softly, sitting in the kitchen chair too tall for me while I swung my chubby legs back and forth. I watched while mommy got her bag packed, filling it with weapons and food, just in case there’s an emergency kind of bag. “Do you have to leave?” I asked her in my higher-pitched five-year-old voice. Tears clogged my eyes and I tried to clear my throat but ended up just coughing instead.
