Chapter 3: The Thin Line Between Love and Lies The evening air was thick with tension as Alex and Sophia attended another gala, this time under even more scrutiny. Reporters whispered, cameras flashed, and Olivia lingered in the distance with a knowing smirk. “You look beautiful,” Alex murmured, his voice softer than usual. Sophia glanced at him, surprised. “Thank you.” He paused then added, "We have to get them tonight. But I meant it." A warmth spread through her chest, completely unlooked for and not inappropriate. Could he just be playing the game or was there something authentic in his words? Sophia felt his hand tighten around her waist as they pushed through the crowd. She tried to convince herself it was for show, but when their eyes locked, there was a glimmer of something... that seemed incredibly close to genuine affection. Sophia glanced at him, surprised. “Thank you.” He paused then added, "We have to get them tonight. But I meant it." A warmth spread through her chest, but it was neither welcome nor unexpected. Was he simply playing his role, or did what he said have a genuine foundation? Sophia felt his hand on her waist tighten as they passed through the crowd. She tried to convince herself it was for show, but when their eyes met, there was a flicker of something... so close to genuine attraction that it seemed almost risky. Before she could think it through, Olivia stepped into their path, a smirk curling her lips. “Well, well,” she purred, “let’s see how much of a great little love story this is going to be.” The Sterling penthouse echoed with silence when Alex and Sophia returned from the gala. Air between them crackled with unuttered words, the burden of their act weighing heavily on both. Sophia removed her heels and breathed out sharply. “That was exhausting.” Alex tightened his tie but kept a close watch on her. "You handled it well." She scoffed. "Oh, so now I get a compliment? What happened to keeping this professional?" Alex sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I'm trying, Sophia." She turned fully to face him, crossing her arms. "Trying? Trying to do what? Keep up this perfect illusion and pretend this—" she gestured between them, "—isn't driving us both crazy?" He stepped closer, his voice dropping. "This isn't easy, I know that much. But we have no choice." Her eyes flashed with frustration. "Maybe you don't, but I certainly do." Alex’s jaw tightened. “And what exactly does that mean?” She hesitated before saying, “Maybe this was a mistake.” His face darkened, the chill mask of control slipping away. “Do you really want to go out?” Sophia swallowed, looking into his eyes for something—anything—that might tell her what he really wanted. All she saw was the same guarded expression he always wore. She admitted softly, “I don’t know.” “But I do know that it’s not possible for me to just keep acting as if nothing about this is real.” Alex took another step, so close now that she could feel the heat radiating from him. His hand lifted as if to touch her, but at the last second, he dropped it. "Sophia…" The way he pronounced her name made her heart clench. It was the nearest thing to vulnerability she'd seen from him. Before she could reply, Alex's phone buzzed. He muttered a curse and glanced at the screen. The look on his face thickened. “What is it?” she asked warily. He glanced at her, his voice sharp. "A problem, One that could cost us everything." Sophia watched as Alex paced the living room with a phone stuck to his ear. His face was a turmoil of frustration and worry; he was not as composed as usual. "What do you mean the board is rethinking this?" he snapped. "We had a deal. This marriage was supposed to lock me in my position." Sophia tensed. She had known this arrangement was on shaky grounds, but hearing it put so plainly made her insides twist. Alex ended the call abruptly and threw his phone onto the couch. He exhaled sharply and turned to her. "The board is questioning our marriage. They think it’s just a publicity stunt." Sophia crossed her arms. "Huh, I don’t know how they thought of that’’ Alex’s gaze turned sharp. "This is not the moment for witty banter, Sophia. If they withdraw their support, I lose it all." "And what do you expect me to do?" she asked, her frustration laced the voice. "Hold a press conference about my everlasting love for you?" He ran a hand through his hair, looking truly lost for the first time since she had met him. "We need to prove this is real." She gave a dry little laugh. "Alex, it's not real. It never was." Silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken emotions. Finally, Alex stepped closer, his voice low but earnest. "Then let's make it real." Sophia’s breath caught at what Alex said. She searched his face for a trace of insincerity, but for once, he seemed entirely candid—vulnerable, in fact. "Make it real?" she echoed, her voice hardly a whisper. "Alex, we can't just switch on a button and—". "Why not?" he cut in, stepping even closer. "We spend every day together. We know each other's secrets, fears, and frustrations already. The only thing missing is—" "Love?" she finished for him, arching an eyebrow. He exhaled and rubbed the back of his neck. "I know how this started, but somewhere along the way it stopped feeling like a lie, didn't it?" Sophia hesitated. She wanted to deny it and to call his bluff, but deep down inside she knew he was right. The little touches, the stolen glances, the way her heart raced when he was near, it was more than a performance now. "I don’t know, Alex," she said, turning her face away. "Once we take this path, we can’t backtrack." Alex caught her wrist gently, and his touch sent tremors down her spine. "Then we shall not pretend anymore. Let us explore what this really is."
