Chapter 4: Cracks in the Façade Sophia swallowed hard, her pulse hammering. The walls she had so carefully built were crumbling, and she wasn’t sure she had the strength to stop them from falling completely. Sophia stared at Alex, her heart racing so much that she was sure he could hear it. She had spent so long convincing herself this was just a business arrangement, but now everything felt different. Then, she asked, “And what if we find out that this isn’t real?" her voice was trembling. Alex’s jaw tightened at that. "We walk away after the contract ends, no harm done. But if this is real…" He broke off, his blue eyes dark and inscrutable. Shaking her head, Sophia stepped back. “You make it sound so easy. However, it’s not. There are too many risks.” He exhaled sharply, showing his frustration. "I know. But acting like this isn't happening doesn't make it go away." There was a silence that grew between them and it felt heavy. Eventually, Alex sighed gently and ran his hand through his hair. "I’m not saying you have to decide anything right now, okay. I just want you to think about it." Sophia nodded, speechless as her emotions clamored for dominance within her. She was already more deeply involved than she had ever intended to be. But the question was, was she willing to risk everything for something that might not even last? The following days were an intricate dance of avoidance mingled with stolen glances. Sophia was more confused than ever. She had promised to consider what Alex had said, but that promise weighed heavily on her heart. One evening, she happened to be alone in the large living room of the penthouse looking out over the city skyline. A gentle murmur of footsteps approaching said she was not alone. "You’re quiet tonight," Alex said, his voice low as he leaned against the doorway. Sophia didn’t turn around. "Just thinking." "About us?" he asked, stepping closer. She swallowed hard. "About everything. This arrangement. The risks. Whether I'm a fool for even considering..." Alex moved a step beside her, keeping his eyes glued to her profile. "You're not foolish, Sophia. Actually, you're one of the smartest persons I happen to know. And said what I said; I don't want to pretend anymore." She finally turned to him, looking in his eyes for a sign of dishonesty. "You say that now, but what happens when the contract ends? When will this stop benefiting you?" Alex’s expression hardened. "This isn’t just about business anymore." Sophia couldn't sleep all night as Alex's words kept replaying in her head like a haunting melody, each syllable pulling her deeper into uncertainty. She had demanded proof but what did that even mean? Could Alex Sterling really be capable of something real? The following day finds her in the study and paces along. His pace is slow and still pauses when he sees her, his expression being unreadable. "I thought about what you said," Alex admitted, his voice softer than usual. Sophia folded her arms. "And?" He inhaled deeply. "I can show you, but you have to trust me on this." She laughed softly, and there was a trace of disbelief in her laughter. "Trust? Alex, that's not really your forte, is it?" He stepped closer, his eyes dark with something she couldn't name. "I know; it's just that I'm trying, Sophia. I need you to meet me halfway." Her heart was racing. This was risky, whatever they were doing was dancing on the edge of something that could break them both. But before she could react, the door swung open. Ethan stood there with a grim face. "You guys need to see this. Now." Alex tensed. "What is it?" Ethan raised his phone, the light from the screen highlighting a news flash. "The contract was leaked by someone." Sophia's blood ran cold looking at the glowing screen in Ethan's hand. The words in the news alert blurred together, but she caught the headline that could ruin them: Billionaire Alex Sterling’s Marriage Exposed as a Contract Deal! She turned to Alex, whose face had already turned to stone. His jaw was tense, and the room was unbearably silent. "Who did this?" Alex’s voice was low, dangerous. Ethan shook his head. "We don't know yet. But the media is going crazy. Victoria has already called an emergency meeting." Sophia’s stomach twisted. "This is bad. Really bad." His eyes were now on her, his tone becoming sharper. ‘Do you think I don’t know that?’ She flinched a little; the tension of his voice sliced through her. "I’m not your enemy here, Alex. We both knew this was risky." He exhaled and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I have to fix this." "How do you figure that?" Sophia asked, crossing her arms. "Because once the press sniffs out a scandal like this, they won't drop it." Ethan cleared his throat. "Damage control. We need a plan—fast. Either you two double down and prove your marriage is real, or…" Sophia frowned. "Or what?" Ethan paused for a moment and said, "Or you cut your losses and end it now." Silence engulfed the room while the decision's gravity hung over them. Sophia's heart raced. This was the moment that would alter everything. The gravity of Ethan's words hung in the air, palpable with tension. Sophia’s heart raced as she locked eyes with Alex, pleading for an answer from his turbulent blue gaze. "Ending it is not an option," Alex finally said, his voice determined. "We fight this. Together." Standing in front of the mirror, Sophia smoothened the dress that Alex had chosen for her; it was blue and very elegant. Press Conference was just around the corner and her heart beat like a drum war in her chest. Alex stepped beside her, adjusting his cufflinks. "You ready?" His voice was steady, but his eyes betrayed the weight of the moment. She met his gaze in the reflection. "Do I have a choice?" His lips quivered in the faintest smirk. "Not really." Ethan knocked on the door and looked inside. "Time's up. The cameras are everywhe re. The moment you step out there, it's over."
