Chapter 14

1000 Words
*Elena's POV* I laughed a little and quickly used my hands to cover my mouth the moment Andrea stood up and headed upstairs with that dramatic flair. Liam also laughed softly beside me and continued eating as if nothing had happened, but I could see the relief in his eyes. Then Liam looked at me and asked gently, “How is the food? Is it okay for you? Be honest.” I nodded, taking another bite. “It’s quite good. Really delicious actually. The flavors are perfect.” He smiled warmly, his eyes lighting up. “I asked the chef specifically to make it really good and nice for you. I wanted everything to be perfect tonight, especially for you and the baby.” I stared at him for a moment, feeling a mix of surprise and warmth spreading through my chest. He noticed my gaze and jokingly asked, “Is there something on my face? That must be why you’ve been staring for so long.” I laughed it off, feeling a little shy, then asked him straight out, my voice soft but curious, “Why are you being so overly kind to me, Liam? You don’t have to do all this. The fruits, the special meals… it feels like too much.” He went quiet for a while, his fork pausing mid-air. The silence stretched between us, filled with unspoken emotions. Then he said softly, “This is just who I am, Elena. This is how I grew up. My dad taught me to take care of the people around me, even if it’s hard. Especially when they need it. I don’t want you to feel like a burden here. I want you to feel safe.” I nodded a little, feeling a rush of emotions I couldn’t quite name. I think it is gratitude mixed with fear that this kindness might disappear once the year was over. I returned to my food, but my heart felt heavier and lighter at the same time. Immediately, my phone started ringing loudly on the dining table. Both our eyes went straight to it. The screen showed “Eliza.” My twin sister! Hell no, I was not going to take that call. I grabbed the phone quickly, my hand shaking, and silenced it immediately. Then I immediately blocked her number. I wondered why I hadn’t done that ever since the incident. The pain from that day still felt so fresh. She called again with another phone number. I kept declining and blocking every new number that appeared. My fingers moved fast, but my chest was tightening with every ring. Liam noticed and asked with concern in his voice, “What’s the problem? Who keeps calling you like this?” I sighed heavily, trying to keep my voice steady. “It’s my fwin sister.” He looked surprised, his eyebrows rising. “She is calling you? After everything that happened?” I nodded, my chest tightening even more with anger and hurt. “Why?” he asked innocently, tilting his head. “It must be important if she’s trying this hard to reach you.” I couldn’t control my anger anymore. The words burst out of me like a dam breaking. “I do not fuckin’ care what the hell she wants to tell me!” My voice shook with raw emotion, tears stinging my eyes. “She should stay on her own and stop trying to get to me. I don’t want to hear anything from her ever again. She ruined my life, Liam. She took everything from me and now she thinks she can just call like nothing happened?” Liam reached across the table and gently took my hand, rubbing it in slow, soothing circles. His touch was warm and calming, but it only made the tears threaten to fall faster. “Elena… take your time and heal. There’s no rush. It’s a gradual process. Healing takes time, and from the look of things , you have not healed yet. Don’t be too hard on yourself, okay? You’ve been through so much. It’s okay to feel angry. It’s okay to not be ready.” “Yeah… thank you!” I said, but my voice was still sharp with anger and pain. I immediately stood up from the chair, the emotions and pregnancy hormones were making everything feel ten times more intense. My eyes were burning with unshed tears, and my tone was clearly laced with frustration. I needed to leave. I walked out on him and headed straight upstairs, my heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. He called after me, his voice full of worry, “Elena, wait… what did I do wrong? Please talk to me.” I didn’t turn back. My voice came out colder than I intended. “Nothing. Just focus on your food.” I kept walking up the stairs, but I could feel his eyes on me the entire time. When I glanced back quickly, he was smiling softly while watching me ascend the stairs. That gentle smile made my chest ache even more — a confusing mix of anger, hurt, and something warmer that I wasn’t ready to face. I was too worked up to feel anything good at that moment. Then he finally said from behind, his voice carrying up the stairs, “I will send the maid to bring up late night dinner and snacks for you in case you’re a night eater. You and the baby need to eat properly.” I chuckled quietly to myself, but I didn’t let him hear it. I continued up the stairs, my heart still racing with a confusing mix of anger and hurt. "He is funny" I thought to myself while I walked to my room. "hold on...did he just make me smile all through tonight?". I thought to myself. He is gradually becoming a huge difference in my life and I seem comfortable with it.
