Chapter 11

*Elena's POV* “You don’t have to sign immediately if you don’t feel comfortable… take your time,” Liam said gently, his eyes were soft as he watched me. We were sitting in the elegant living room of Liam’s huge mansion. The lawyer sat across from us with the thick contract papers spread neatly on the mahogany table. My hand hovered over the pen. I hesitated, my fingers were trembling slightly. Then I looked down at my little baby bump, gently pressing my palm against it. This was for the baby. For our future. I took a deep breath and signed my name on the dotted line. The lawyer nodded with a professional smile. “Congratulations to both of you. This is a legally binding contract marriage that will automatically terminate after exactly one year. Any party who goes against the terms we have signed today will face full legal consequences. No exceptions.” We both nodded in unison, our eyes meeting for a brief second. The lawyer gathered his documents, shook our hands, and left. The heavy front door clicked shut, leaving the entire mansion wrapped in complete silence. Liam and I sat there quietly. The weight of what we had just done hung heavy in the air between us. My heart was beating fast. I felt shy and nervous, so I finally asked softly, “So… what now?” Before Liam could answer, a loud knock echoed through the house. I thought maybe the lawyer had forgotten something. I stood up quickly and walked to the door. The moment I opened it halfway, a woman about my age or maybe a little older pushed past me forcefully, dragging two expensive designer suitcases behind her. “And who are you?” I asked, startled, stepping back. She turned around sharply, looking at me with such audacity, as if she had just seen a ghost. “Shouldn’t I be the one asking you that?” She flipped her perfectly styled hair. “My bad. I haven’t introduced myself properly.” Immediately, Liam’s face went completely pale with shock. “Andrea? What are you doing here?” She completely ignored him and walked straight toward me, her high heels clicking loudly on the marble floor. She was stunning....she wore sharp makeup, her skin was flawless and shiny, she was wearing luxurious clothes that screamed wealth and confidence. She looked more glamorous and dashing than anyone I had seen in a long time. “Hi, I’m Andrea,” she said with a sweet but cutting smile. “Liam’s girlfriend.” I felt my stomach drop. Shock hit me hard. I turned to Liam, my voice shaking. “You have a girlfriend?” Liam opened his mouth but no words came out. He just stood there frozen. Andrea answered for him instead, her smile widening. “Yes, he didn’t tell you? You’re uh… Elena, right? The poor pregnant girl who was cheated on the night before her wedding?” She tilted her head, her voice dripping with fake pity. “Poor girl. Liam told me all about you. He is such a good and decent man. He likes helping helpless people out, even though I was clearly against it.” Every single word felt like a slap across my face. I was hurt. Beyond hurt. My chest tightened painfully. How could she downgrade me like that? Speak so ill of me right to my face? And Liam… was that really how he saw me? Just the poor pregnant girl he was helping out of pity? Tears burned in my eyes. I was heartbroken and humiliated on the very first day of our contract marriage. I looked at Liam with so many emotions swirling in my eyes ....it was evident on my face that I felt pain, betrayal, confusion. Foolish me, I was expecting him to say something, to defend me, to explain. But he stayed completely quiet, his face was pale and tense. Andrea continued cheerfully, as if she hadn’t just shattered me into pieces. “I don’t know why he didn’t tell you about me. My bad. It’s nice to meet you, Elena.” I stood there, frozen, my hands were trembling at my sides. The silence in the room felt suffocating. My throat burned as I tried to hold back the tears. This was supposed to be the start of our agreement ... a safe place for me and my baby. Instead, I felt small, unwanted, and completely broken again. Liam finally found his voice, but it came out weak. “Andrea… this isn’t the right time.” Andrea laughed lightly, waving her hand. “Oh come on, babe. I just got back from my trip. I missed you. And I wanted to surprise you. I didn’t know you’d have… company so soon.” I swallowed hard, fighting the lump in my throat. “Liam… is this true? You have a girlfriend and you didn’t tell me?” He rubbed the back of his neck, avoiding my eyes. “It’s… complicated.” “Complicated?” Andrea repeated with a smirk. “No, it’s simple. I’m his girlfriend. We’ve been together for months. He’s just being his usual kind self, helping a girl in need. Right, Liam?” I felt my heart cracking. The humiliation burned hotter than anything I had felt since Alexander’s betrayal. On the very first day of this contract, I was already being treated like a burden. Like someone who needed saving. Like I wasn’t even worth basic honesty. Tears finally slipped down my cheeks. I wiped them away quickly, but more came. “I thought… I thought this was going to be different. I thought we had an agreement.” Andrea stepped closer, still smiling sweetly. “Don’t worry, Elena. I’m not the jealous type. You can stay as long as you need. Liam is very generous like that.” I looked at Liam again, my voice barely a whisper full of pain. “Say something… please.” But he remained quiet, caught between us, his face filled with guilt and discomfort. Andrea tilted her head, still smiling. “I don’t know why he didn’t tell you about me… my bad. It’s nice to meet you again, Elena. We are going to have so much fun together, as long as you stay in your place.”
