THE TRUTH HE CARRIED
“Your dad killed my father.”
The words echoed in my mind long after Alex had said them.
Your dad killed my father.
I stared at him, unable to find the right words. His eyes were filled with tears, but there was something else behind them—years of anger, grief, and unanswered questions.
Slowly, I shook my head.
“No, you're lying.”
“You think I am lying? Then go home and ask your father."
Then he looked away.
My chest tightened.
“sorry."
Alex looked at me.
“You keep saying this. Sorry won't bring him back.”
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Before I could ask another question, my phone began ringing.
I looked at the screen.
Dad.
My heart began pounding.
I answered.
“Dad?”
There was silence on the other end.
“Dad, can you hear me?”
His voice finally came through.
“Maya.”
Something about his voice made me uneasy.
“I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Do you know a company called Dave Freight?”
Silence.
Not a normal pause.
A silence filled with recognition.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Dad?”
“Who told you that name?”
My heart sank.
He knew it.
“Just answer me.”
Another silence followed.
Then the call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Alex was watching me.
“He knows,” he said.
I didn't respond.
My father's reaction had told me more than his words could have.
He knew the name.
He knew the company.
And whatever had happened years ago was something he had deliberately kept away from me.
I looked at Alex.
No. It can't be. I have to go now.”
I couldn't stay in Alex's office any longer.
My father's reaction on the phone had left me more confused than before. The moment I mentioned Dave Freight, his voice had changed.
He hadn't asked what the company was.
He hadn't denied knowing the name.
“I have to go.”
“Where?”
“Home.”
He nodded.
I walked toward the door, but before I left, I stopped.
There was one question I couldn't leave without asking.
“Alex?”
“Yes?”
“Why did you really come here?”
He stared at me.
“I told you.”
“No.”
I turned to face him.
“You didn't come here simply because you wanted a job.”
He remained silent.
“You came here looking for something.”
His jaw tightened.
Finally, he spoke.
“I came here for the truth.”
I left his office without another word.
The hallway seemed different now.
The company I had grown up around suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every employee I passed made me wonder what they knew.
Every closed office door made me wonder what secrets were hidden behind it.
And for the first time, I questioned the man I had trusted all my life.
My father.
I reached the parking lot and stopped beside my car.
Alex's words continued to echo in my head.
Your dad killed my father.
I didn't want to believe him.
But my father's reaction on the phone had created a new doubt inside me.
Maybe Alex wasn't telling me the whole story.
Maybe my father wasn't either.
I started the car and drove home.my way home, my mind was filled with questions.
Why had my father never told me about Dave Freight Empire?
And why did Alex believe my father was responsible for his father's death?
I drove home with a heavy heart.
When I arrived, I found my father sitting in the living room.
On reaching home I found my dad sitting in the leaving room.
"Dad, just start explaining please."
"Maya who told you that lie."
"Now you are the lier Dad."
"You call me a lier.?
I felt bad the moment I called my dad a lier.
